Women at Oxford Admission of Women
Admission of Women to Oxford University- Archive 50 Very Rare Documents 1896
Women at Oxford. Archive of papers recording the great debate between the Association for promoting the Education of Women AEW at Oxford and the faculty and students who opposed their entrance. 1895-1896. Total of 50 separate documents ranging from printed single page letters through bound booklets. The majority of these documents are known to exist only in one single additional copy held by the University of Oxford; and several of the papers are not noted to be included even within Oxford's collection as per OCLC worldcat.

This collection of papers is ripe for scholarly research. Forming a cohesive archive of 50 documents it includes synopses of the contents and resolution of meetings of the AEW arguments concerning various aspects of the question of inclusion of women at Oxford and advice for members concerning upcoming resolutions put to vote. The AEW was founded in 1873 to gain the full educational enfranchisement of women at Oxford who had actually been attending classes in small numbers by special permission since 1866. Despite vigorous support for the cause Oxford maintained as nearly the last hold-out against coeducation among British Universities not allowing women to gain the full B.A. degree until 1920. Some documents of the archive include "The Due Recognition of Women by the University of Oxford" 1896; "A Brief History of the Proposal to Admit Women to Degrees at Cambridge in 1887-8" by Thomas Case 1896; "The Value of a Genuine Diploma"; and "The B.A. Degree for Women." Full list available upon request. Individual pages or booklets sizes vary. Some hole-punched a few corner tears light edge soiling and toning. Some stamped with circular stamp "Board of Education Library"; most with numerical markers in red to upper right corner of documents. All in good condition and clearly legible. Full of sagacity and wit this archive evidences the reasoned support of women's right to the diploma over twenty years before it was finally granted.

A partial List of Publications and some OCLC Worldcat search results: "most" are held only at Oxford University and no other copies at any institutions or library worldwide. 4 items had no copies at any Liabraries as per OCLC not even Oxford. Women at Work, Maternity
Discussions Upon the Disabilities of Mothers as Workers -1910
Women Employment Feminism and Women's Rights Summary of Eight Papers and Discussions Upon the Disabilities of Mothers as Workers. London: Fabian Women's Group 1910. Measures 8.5" x 5" inches. 32 pages. This pamphlet summarizes the problems that arise from the modern expectation of women to work difficult industrial jobs as well as the traditional duties of motherhood. This pamphlet was produced by the Fabian Women's Group which acted as a suffrage pressure group directed at the Labour Party that also advocated for women workers. The summarized section was edited by Charlotte Payne Townshend wife of George Bernard Shaw. Paper titles include: The Physical Disabilities of Maternity The Influence of Hygiene and Physical Culture upon the Disabilities of Motherhood The Effects upon children of the Mother's Activity Outside the Home and more. From "Motherhood and Industrial Work" Frau Lily Braun states: "The evils of exploited labor are seen at their worst in the employment of married women with children. The wages of many a workman do not suffice for family maintenance and the wife's work is absolutely essential to make up what is needed. In the early morning she starts for her work; and the cooking washing cleaning and sewing must be done in the evening by an overtaxed wearied woman. Premature age and spiritual exhaustion are the result." Some minor stains from rusted staples in the gutter of the spine not affecting text. Overall in very good condition. unknown

Women at Work, Textile Factory
Photograph of Women at Work in Textile Factory
1920s vintage sepia photograph of around 50 women at work in a textile factory. The photographer's board is 10" x 8" inches and image is 8.25" x 5" inches. The women are seated in long rows and armed with sewing machines and seem to be turning bundles of cloth into garments. Spools of thread hang down from a center rail in the middle of the table to be fed into the sewing machines. Some of the cloth appears to be polka-dotted similar to the dresses that several women pictured appear to be wearing. The factory is consisted almost entirely of women - there is one man in a waistcoat walking around accompanied by an older woman. The working women seem to be of varying ages from their early 20s into their 50s. Textile manufacturing was unique at the time for its overwhelmingly female labor force. Sepia toned very good condition with great detail. unknown

Women at Work, WWI
Reports of the Industrial Fatigue and Women Workers in Relation to Hours of Work in Shell-Making. -1919
Reports of the Industrial Fatigue Resarch Board: No.2 - The Output of Women Workers in Relation to Hours of Work in Shell-Making. London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Ex libris. 9.5" x 6" inches. 23 pages. This WWI-era pamphlet analyzed the industrial output of women working in munitions factories. It contains numerous tables and graphs that measure the relative efficiency of female labor at different times of day under different shift schedules and other schema. Women entered these factories as part of the war effort as the male labor force had been mostly shipped off to the front and individually produced hundreds of shells a day. The women whose work is analyzed here performed an essential function as a single Lewis gun the standard light machine gun for British forces could fire 500 rounds in a minute. Women in large shell filling factories worked with TNT. This poisonous explosive could cause a potentially fatal condition called toxic jaundice indicated by the skin turning yellow. There were also several devastating explosions in which women workers were killed. During WW I an estimated two million women took on jobs which had been previously been filled by men opening up new opportunities in the world of work and strengthening their case for the right to vote. Has some pencil catalogue markings and a 2 inch separation of wrappers at lower spine but this pamphlet is overall in very good condition. unknown

Women at Work, France England
Two Pamphlets on Women's Industrial Employment in 1870s France and England
Watherston Edward J. The Industrial Employment of Women in France Compared with England. London: Spottiswoods and Co. 1878. French Silk Manufactures and the Industrial Employment of Women. London: Dryden Pres - J Davy and Sons 1879. Both measure 8.5" x 5.25". 16 and 23 pages respectively. The 1878 pamphlet "The Industrial Employment of Women in France." is a comparative analysis of the labor participation rate of women in France and in England. French women were much more integrated into the labor market this study finds even despite the fact that England had a disproportionate demographic surplus of women and an even more developed industrial sector. At the conclusion of the pamphlet Watherston proposes three major steps spur female employment in England based off the French example which are the: "1. Establishment of special training schools for certain trades following a preliminary general education. 2. These training schools. must be made self-supporting within a short time. All pupils must pay a moderate fee for being taught. 3. There should be union of the managers of training schools with all manufacturers wishing to employ female labour. The union must aim both to give employment to women and to advise as to the directions in which it may be sought and into which it may be extended." Watherston lays blame for the poor labor participation rate of English women at the fact that they are barred from major employment sectors such as the railways as well as a private sector which demonstrated no inclination to hire them. He concludes that English women need organization first and foremost and should establish a "Society for the Industrial Employment of Women".

The second pamphlet focuses on first the history of the French silk industry and later women's employment within it noting the unique advances that the French female silk workers enjoyed. Watherston notes that "Other countries before France made use of female labour but the French were the first who employed not only as we do the hands but also the brains of women. The technical education of female workers took place simultaneously with that of the men and it is to the results of this that not a little of the excellence of the French silk manufactures of the present day is due." Watherston goes on to examine the silk manufacture at Jujurieux which took in young women from a rural underdeveloped region and lodged fed and rigorously trained them in silk production. In both of these pamphlets he highlights and endorses enterprises that transform women into workers often through a process that includes living and training amongst fellow apprentices for years at a time. There is a prevailing belief that women must be engineered into working class subjects through this total immersion but with a confidence that they are technically and intellectually skilled enough should they be properly acclimated. Some minor chipping to left edge 3/4 in. tear on top edge of one pamphlet overall in very good condition. unknown

Women at Work, Factory
Women in Small Manufacturing Operation in 1900 Overseen by Male Supervisor

Women Comics, Women Outlaws
Rare Anomalous 1951 Comic "Women Outlaws #0
1951. ComicsWestern Americana Anomalous comic "Cody of the Pony Express #1" with wrappers for "Female Outlaws". New York: Fox Features ca. 1951. Illustrated in color throughout. Original stapled pictorial wraps. 4to 10.25†x 7â€. A curious and rare anomalous printing from Fox Syndicate in which the comic interior Cody of the Pony Express does not match the wrappers Women Outlaws. Lacking issue number on the cover and no publication date or copyright notice. This issue is sometimes referred to as "Women Outlaws #0". The first Cody story starts on page 2 but still comprises a full standard 36-page comic. This anomaly illustrates how mid-century comic publishers especially smaller ones like Fox sometimes recycled or rebranded content to meet publishing schedules or redirect stock.

The first issue of Cody of the Pony Express a short-lived Western series from Fox Feature Syndicate dramatizes the exploits of a youthful William "Buffalo Bill" Cody during his fabled tenure as a Pony Express rider. Released at the height of the postwar boom in Western popular culture the comic positions Cody as a frontier hero navigating sabotage frontier violence and betrayal. As with other Fox titles of the period Cody blends action with sentimentality and features a mix of standalone stories and continuing characters. This first issue is especially notable for it's covers which were originally used for another Western themed Fox comic "Women Outlaws" Issue no. 7.

The comic includes five story segments: “Wagons of Death†in which Cody discovers a devastated wagon train and must avenge his dying friend; “Powdersmoke Payoff†in which Cody’s efforts to secure a freight contract are disrupted by hired guns; “Sleepy Time Six-Shooters†a tale highlighting the physical toll of postal duty on the prairie; “Jim Coulter’s Race for Life†involving a desperate dash through Indigenous territory; and the two-page prose narrative “Family Feud.†Comic exhibits wear and discoloration to wrappers with some chipping to spine. Interior with two small ink mark to margins of page 1 otherwise clean and complete with minimal wear. Overall good to very good condition. This issue with anomalous wrappers is valuable not just for its rarity but also as a material example of the fluid and sometimes rushed publishing practices of Golden Age comic producers. unknown
