‎Women Soldiers, WWII‎

‎American Female Soldiers in the WWII Photo Archive‎

‎A compelling archive of 18 original WWII-era photographs documenting American women in military service including an African-American Women’s Army Corps WAC member and other auxiliary forces in both stateside and European settings. Photos measure between 3" x 2" and 6" x 3.5". The images provide a rare glimpse into the wartime experiences of female service members their uniforms daily activities and their presence in war-torn cities.
Notably the collection includes a rare photograph of two African American women in military uniform with a caption on verso stating "Gynnie Polly Corsica '45". The presence of African American WACs in Corsica during this period is significant as they played crucial roles in administrative and logistical support including the management of postal services and supply chains thereby ensuring operational efficiency in the European theater. Their service in such capacities not only contributed to the war effort but also paved the way for the integration of African American women into the U.S. armed forces. The archive also includes several haunting images of bombed-out European cities with ruined churches and collapsed buildings—likely sites in Germany or France. One photograph showing a soldier standing amid the rubble suggests these women may have been among the thousands deployed to assist in the post-liberation rebuilding efforts. Additionally a photograph labeled "Chattanooga Tenn." shows a woman standing at the entrance of a home in civilian clothing hinting at a stateside context perhaps before or after deployment. Another image inscribed "Ann & Lillie Mother" features two women posing outside a house possibly representing family members of a servicewoman.

Several photographs depict women in official military attire including WAC dress uniforms with garrison caps and enlisted insignia as well as British-style battledress worn by American personnel serving in Europe. One particularly striking image shows three uniformed personnel two women and one man standing at attention in front of a government building likely in Britain. Another shows a woman in uniform standing before the gilded equestrian statue of Joan of Arc in Paris an iconic location that suggests the presence of U.S. forces in liberated France. Other images capture moments of leisure and camaraderie such as a woman in uniform standing near a riverbank in a relaxed pose and a group of women engaged in clerical or administrative work underscoring their contributions beyond combat roles. Taken together these photographs offer a powerful testament to the role of American women in World War II highlighting their service in both the European and homefront theaters. Women in the WAC WAVES Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service and other auxiliary units played crucial roles in military administration communications intelligence and medical services. While initially barred from combat their efforts were vital to the U.S. war machine and their service laid the groundwork for the permanent integration of women into the armed forces. In very good condition overall. unknown‎

‎Women Soldiers, WWII‎

‎First American Women in War: "Equal Pay" for Women in War Industries‎

‎Two pieces documenting American women's participation in WWII. "Equal Pay" for Women in War Industries. United States Department of Labor. Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1942. Bulletin No. 196 of the Women's Bureau. Poster calling on men and women to "find adventure by enlisting in the U.S. Army and Women's Army Corps." This pamphlet argued for pay equity for women citing women's roles in supporting families as well as being skilled laborers who were instrumental for the war effort In 1944 skilled female workers made an average weekly wage of $31.21 while skilled male workers earned $54.65 weekly. Comes with a poster enticing men and women to "find adventure by enlisting in the U.S. Army and Women's Army Corps." The poster seems to date from wartime era. The Women's Army Corps was established in 1943 and took over the auxiliary unit formed just a year earlier inserting women more fully into wartime production and operations. Two important artifacts representing American women's contributions to WWII. unknown‎

‎1900s French Women's Fencing Duel Stereoview Photograph Archive‎

‎Women SPORTS Six action shots of a women's fencing dual in the early 1900s. 4" x 6" each. Stereoview on cardboard mount. N.p. Captioned "Le Duel" with each photograph numbered. Historically fencing has been primarily a men's sport and though women have been fencing for hundreds of years there was still heavy stigma against women taking up any sport. After WWI many French fencing schools opened up classes for women to grow their economy. This act opened up the doors for women to eventually be allowed to fence in the Olympics in 1924. This set of six stereoviews showcase two women fencers with a female referee and a group of female viewers. Each stereoview is numbered in the order of the duel; the first shows the two women facing each other with their swords down the second and third show the women mid duel and the last three show the victor heralding over the defeated opponent with two women side by side helping her recover. Minor wear to edges some sunning and wear to photos. Overall only good condition. unknown‎

‎Early Women Boxers Photo Archive 1910s-1950s‎

‎1910. Women Sports Early Photography Archive of 16 black and white photographs of women boxers from the 1910s-1950s. 6 silver gelatin and one real photo postcard. Measure between 2.5" x 3.5" to 3.5" x 5.25". Boxing has always been a controversial sport due to it's brutality and was largely prohibited for women in the 19th century. However some rebel women were recorded as partaking in matches since the 1700s. Women's boxing first appeared in the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1904 in St. Louis and in the 1920s Professor Andrew Newton formed a Women's Boxing Club in London. However it wasn't until 2012 that Women's Boxing became an official sport in the Olympics. The earliest photo in this archive shows two women facing each other in corsets and long cotton and wool dresses with boxing gloves surrounded by a group of men and women. This real photo post card has a pencil inscription en verso that reads "August 1914 - For fun - women boxers - Francis Edith." Another early photo from the 1900s shows two women in front of a snowy background their boxing gloved fists raised and an inscription en verso "Grace Miss Vandehei boxing - This is Grace's roommate. A fine girl she's here now." Two photos from the 1920s shows a boxing match between a man and a woman the woman wears women's pants which were primarily worn for sport and high heels. One photo shows the two with their fists raised getting ready for a throw while the second photo shows the woman swinging her arm with her gloved fist in the man's chest. Another interesting photo shows a crew of people on a ship deck two women one in a hair curler cap and day dress and heels the other just slightly out of frame in a dress and flats raise their gloved fists as a crowd of men and women overlook. Through the legal and social ramifications of women's participation many women partook behind closed doors for sport and leisure. This rare collection uncovers the fierce spirit of several women whose efforts proved women's physical strength and prowess at a time of rapidly changing social norms. Photos are crisp and clear overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎Ladies Champion Base Ball Club c. 1911‎

‎turn of the century Championship Women's Baseball Team Photo Postcard. "The Western Bloomer Girls-Ladies Champion Base Ball Club-Watervliet Mich." Vintage photo-illustrated postcard of the girls baseball team. No date c. 1911. Eleven uniformed girls pose for a team photograph. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded in 1911 by Maud Nelson a renowned pitcher in her own right. "Bloomer Girl" baseball teams of women were formed starting in the 1890s taking their name from Amelia Bloomer who designed loose fitting trousers that women wore while playing sports. Bloomer Girls teams rarely played each other but traveled across America challenging local amateur and minor league men's teams. Bloomer Girls were disciplined sportswomen and frequently won games with their solid skills and competitive spirits. Interestingly these "Boomer Girl" teams were integrated when it came to gender; while most of the players were women each roster had at least one male player. In this image two male players pose in the second row. Verso is blank with space for message and address. Light crease to bottom left corner. In very good condition. unknown books‎

‎Women baseball players. No date c. 1910s. Vintage Real photo postcard that was never sent. Two women in "Ivanhoe" baseball uniforms. 5.5 x 3.5 in. Figures identified on the verso in handwritten blue ink "Goldie & Irma Wade". The history of women playing the game of baseball dates back to the 19th century. In most cases these early women's baseball teams were considered a novelty act. Permanent teams and leagues were rare but they did exist as evidence by this photograph in which 2 serious ball players pose for the camera. In some rare cases women even played on men's teams; perhaps the case for these two who strangely pose without the rest of their teammates. ‎Women Sports Alaska‎

‎The Lightning Strikers. Winners of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League Trophy Nome Alaska 1914‎

‎Nome: Lomen Brothers 1914. Silver gelatin print 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Fine. Women's baseball evolved alongside men's leagues beginning in the 1860s with many teams and leagues appearing throughout the following decades often playing indoors and often unrecorded in the annals of baseball history. Women's baseball was particularly popular in Minnesota and parts of the Midwest in the early part of the twentieth century. This photograph bears evidence as to the game's migration to Alaska Territory where long winters would have been particularly conducive to an indoor league. This photograph by the Nome Alaska firm Lomen Brothers shows the champion team of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League in Nome. We find no record in contemporary newspapers or anywhere else of the league. The Nome Brothers were a well-known photographic firm who migrated from Minnesota to Alaska at the height of the Nome Gold Rush in 1903. By 1909 at the end of the gold rush the population of Nome declined substantially to 2500 from 20000 just a few years earlier. This photograph shows interesting documentation of Nome post-rush and also of the spread of women's sports through migrant populations. We find one other example in the Fred Henton collection at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. A fine example. Lomen Brothers unknown books‎
