‎ACT OF BETRAYAL‎

‎N.Y.: Hyperion 1996. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. When a fatal bomb erupts Britt Montero a "Miami New" police reporter finds herself in the middle of her biggest story so far "The latest Britt Montero mystery involves the Miami News crime reporter in two cases. The first concerns a missing 12-year-old boy. In researching a story about the boy's disappearance Britt uncovers a disturbing pattern in which a number of physically similar young boys have vanished. The other case begins spectacularly when a local Hispanic television commentator is killed via car bomb. His recent stance on a free Cuba had obviously angered one of Miami's Cuban activist groups. But the headlines quickly become personal as Britt is forced to examine the life of the father she never knew. Tony Montero a freedom fighter was executed in Cuba by Castro. A diary he kept while incarcerated may still exist and two anti-Castro groups want it. What Britt learns about her father forces her to reexamine her relationship with her mother whose seeming superficiality looks quite different in a new context. Though Buchanan's mysteries always ring true--she herself has been a Pulitzer Prize-winning crime reporter in Miami for years--Britt Montero has tended to function more as a plot device than a real character. That changes here. In the course of confronting her past and understanding her heritage Britt becomes a more fully realized empathetic protagonist and that in turn makes this entry easily the best installment in an already strong series." -- BOOKLIST. ‎CONTENTS UNDDER PRESSURE‎

‎New York NY U.S.A.: Hyperion 1992. First edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. A Britt Montero crime reporter for a major Miami newspaper. "A fictional version of Miami Herald crime-reporter Buchanan's memoirs Never Let Them See You Cry; The Corpse Had a Familiar Face--i.e. a tale reporter investigates suspicious death surging with sentiment and crackling action and far more appealing than the author's debut novel Nobody Lives Forever 1990. Buchanan's alter ego here is Cuban-American Miami Daily News staffer Britt Montero who seems poised for a series run with all the proper paraphernalia--feisty personality fractured love life intriguing sidekick a photographer gal-pal irritating boss. The sleek first-person narrative centers on Montero's digging into the death of ex-football star D. Wayne Hudson black who fleeing from police allegedly smashed his car and died of his injuries while hospitalized. As Montero talks with the cops who pursued Hudson a disturbing pattern emerges: All Anglo or Hispanic with few exceptions they are violent misfits exiled onto the wild midnight shift--a shift that Montero explores in the company of a homicide cop who soon shares her bed. Meanwhile back at the office crank callers including Montero's mom and a harebrained scheme to set a young reporter adrift in simulation of Haitian refugees add some edgy comic relief. Soon though the action turns downright nasty as Montero comes up with evidence that gets the midnight cops indicted--and then further evidence pointing to a coldblooded murderer wearing the blue. The ensuing trial and verdict lead to a Rodney King-style riot that flames across Miami and to the melodramatic but intensely exciting closing pages which see Montero running from crazed mobs even as she's stalked by the killer. Formulaic but Montero's a charmer and her story seethes with the street-life that her creator knows so we'' -- Kirkus Review. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Book. Hyperion‎

‎MARGIN OF ERROR‎

‎NY: Hyperion 1997. First edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Miami reporter. "Years of covering murders in Miami didn't prepare reporter Britt Montero for the lingering depression she felt after being forced to kill someone herself. Her editor decides the perfect antidote would be some "light" duty--showing movie star Lance Westfell in town for a film what being an investigative reporter is all about. The "light" duty merits hazard pay. The film is cursed from the start: ex-wives botched stunts and an obsessive fan all cause problems and the growing relationship between Britt and Lance only exacerbates matters. Despite the show-biz flash this fifth Montero mystery is mildly disappointing. The plot is slow to unfold and there are too many sidebar excursions into unrelated Miami mayhem. On the positive side is Britt's continued growth as a character. She reveals a sensual side in her relationship with Lance and she uses that life-connection to work through the guilt that led to her "light" assignment. On balance this is an enjoyable enough novel but not quite up to the lofty standards Buchanan has set for herself and Britt" -- Booklist. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Book. Hyperion‎
