‎Women of WWII Poster‎

‎Original Posters for Women World War Effort‎

‎World War posters advertising for women supporting the War effort. YWCA "Care for Her" & "For every fighter a woman worker!" poster c. 1915 backed on linen 41" x 27." This poster prominently features a woman factory worker confidently holding up an early biplane. It is an original World War I poster created by Adolph Treidler to publicize the YWCA's participation in the United War Work Campaign November 11 - 18 1918.

The United War Work Campaign was a a one-week fundraising effort during World War I. Seven voluntary organizations -- the National War Work Council of the YMCA the War Work Council of the YWCA the National Catholic War Council Knights of Columbus the Jewish Welfare Board the War Camp Community Service the American Library Association and the Salvation Army sought to raise $170500000 in subscriptions and pledges during the week of November 11-18 1918 to help boost American soldiers' morale and provide them with recreational activities.
Women may not have fought on the front lines in World War I but as more and more men joined up they were needed in the defense industries and military support jobs. For Every Fighter a Woman Worker 1918 depicts a female munitions worker with the symmetrical poise and beauty of a classical statue; she bears a miniature war-plane in one hand and a bomb-shell in the other. In reality the work she advertised was dirty dangerous physically demanding and attended by frequent explosions and instances of chemical poisoning. Such injuries and fatalities did not come with medals and war pensions. The poster emphasizes the need to "Care for Her Through the YWCA" but ultimately the concern seems to be as much about her moral as physical welfare. The classical beauty of the figure helped to reassure women that their femininity would not be compromised by such work. unknown books‎

‎Women Outlaws‎

‎Rare Anomalous 1951 Comic "Women Outlaws #0‎

‎1951. ComicsWestern Americana Anomalous comic "Cody of the Pony Express #1" with wrappers for "Female Outlaws". New York: Fox Features ca. 1951. Illustrated in color throughout. Original stapled pictorial wraps. 4to 10.25" x 7". A curious and rare anomalous printing from Fox Syndicate in which the comic interior Cody of the Pony Express does not match the wrappers Women Outlaws. Lacking issue number on the cover and no publication date or copyright notice. This issue is sometimes referred to as "Women Outlaws #0". The first Cody story starts on page 2 but still comprises a full standard 36-page comic. This anomaly illustrates how mid-century comic publishers especially smaller ones like Fox sometimes recycled or rebranded content to meet publishing schedules or redirect stock.

The first issue of Cody of the Pony Express a short-lived Western series from Fox Feature Syndicate dramatizes the exploits of a youthful William "Buffalo Bill" Cody during his fabled tenure as a Pony Express rider. Released at the height of the postwar boom in Western popular culture the comic positions Cody as a frontier hero navigating sabotage frontier violence and betrayal. As with other Fox titles of the period Cody blends action with sentimentality and features a mix of standalone stories and continuing characters. This first issue is especially notable for it's covers which were originally used for another Western themed Fox comic "Women Outlaws" Issue no. 7.

The comic includes five story segments: "Wagons of Death" in which Cody discovers a devastated wagon train and must avenge his dying friend; "Powdersmoke Payoff" in which Cody's efforts to secure a freight contract are disrupted by hired guns; "Sleepy Time Six-Shooters" a tale highlighting the physical toll of postal duty on the prairie; "Jim Coulter's Race for Life" involving a desperate dash through Indigenous territory; and the two-page prose narrative "Family Feud." Comic exhibits wear and discoloration to wrappers with some chipping to spine. Interior with two small ink mark to margins of page 1 otherwise clean and complete with minimal wear. Overall good to very good condition. This issue with anomalous wrappers is valuable not just for its rarity but also as a material example of the fluid and sometimes rushed publishing practices of Golden Age comic producers. unknown‎

‎Women Outlaws‎

‎Rare Female AntiHero Comic "Women Outlaws" Post WWII American Gender Roles 1948-1949‎

‎1948. Women's HistoryComicsWestern Americana Fox Features comic series Women Outlaws published 1948 to 1949 dramatizes female criminal figures in Western and frontier settings during the postwar period when American popular culture increasingly explored shifting gender roles. Stories centered on armed bandits stagecoach robbers and frontier criminals portray women occupying roles traditionally reserved for male outlaws situating the series within broader mid twentieth century cultural debates over women's independence and authority following World War II.

Fox Features. Women Outlaws. New York: Fox Features 1948-1949. Issues No. 5 and No. 7. First printings. Color illustrated comic books in original pictorial stapled wrappers.

1 Women Outlaws No. 5. New York: Fox Features 1948. Stories include Roarin' Fanny Stuart plotting a riverboat robbery an illustrated historical feature on Montezuma and a narrative about Naomi Shanes riding with an outlaw gang led by Devereaux.

2 Women Outlaws No. 7. New York: Fox Features July 1949. Lead story "Josie Freeman The Western Wildcat" follows an Arizona outlaw seeking revenge for her father's murder. Additional stories include a prose account of a stagecoach robbery gang led by Lulu Jane and a comic feature on "Cactus Kate Queen of the Kidnappers."

Illustration style reflects conventions of Golden Age crime and Western comics including bold linework bright colors and action centered compositions of gunfights and mounted pursuits. Stories draw inspiration from historical female outlaws such as Belle Starr and Pearl Hart while adapting these figures into sensationalized mid twentieth century crime narratives. Wrappers worn with chipping creases and edge tears. Interiors toned but complete and legible. Good to very good condition. A vivid example of postwar American popular culture exploring female criminal archetypes within Western mythology. unknown‎

Octavo 19.5cm; navy blue cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; dustjacket; iv23-3053pp. Spine ends very gently nudged hint of dustiness to upper edge of textblock else a fresh Fine copy. In the dustjacket designed by Harold James Cue priced $2.00 on front flap; light shelfwear touch of dust-soil to spine rear panel and flap edges with a few short tears and attendant creases upper edge of front panel and upper rear joint shallow loss to spine ends none affecting lettering and a dozen small soil spots to panels; still a bright substantially complete and Very Good example unrestored. Attractive copy of Powell's first novel an autobiographical work recounting the story of an idealistic Midwestern girl who moves to New York aspiring to be a playwright. She settles into a boarding house for women surrounded by a cast of characters who are perpetually out of money deeply concerned with their wardrobes and trying to find a man. She finds fulfilling work as a copy writer navigates her way throughout a string of suitors all the while soliciting advice from her housemates quits her job and briefly entertains the idea of taking up with a Greenwich Village bohemian and writing plays full-time; she abandons her dreams after accepting an eleventh hour proposal from a wealthy suitor embarks on a steamship to London with her man and sails off toward her new life with the words "Is the world really so gorgeous as this"

The earlier part of the novel at least somewhat mirrors Powell's own experiences. She led a somewhat unhappy childhood in Ohio where her stepmother took pleasure at burning her early attempts at poetry and fiction; after moving in with a supportive aunt and attending Lake Erie College she moved to Manhattan to pursue a career as a writer finding work as a publicist for several organizations before marrying her husband an advertising executive named Joseph Gousha and settling in Greenwich Village where she would live out the rest of her life. Her marriage allowed her to quit her job and focus on her writing full-time "using the Children's Reading Room of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue as the place to write. What became the classic elements of Dawn Powell's work were in evidence from the outset. Her first novel Whither.has the characteristic satiric tone mordant wit and unforgiving eye for the foibles of middle-class Americans whether they lived in the Middle West the setting for her early work or were newly arrived midwestern émigrés to the big city of New York desperately seeking sophistication" Carnes Mark C. "Dawn Powell." Invisible Giants: Fifty Americans Who Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books p.232. Powell disavowed her literary debut leaving it out of lists of her publications throughout her lifetime and referring to She Walks In Beauty 1928 as her first novel. An uncommon debut published in small numbers and rare in dustjacket; we find no copies for sale in the auction record and OCLC notes a scant 11 holdings in U.S. institutions. SMITH P-576. ‎Women Property Rights Sir Thomas Erskine Perry‎

‎Early 1856 Pair of Letters Gathering Legal Support for the UK Married Woman's Property Act‎

‎Women's Property Rights Perry Sir Thomas Erskine. Pair of Autograph Letters Signed circa 1856 to an unnamed female correspondent about married women's property equality. Totaling 8 handwritten pages both signed "E Perry" both in good condition with only mild age related toning to paper.

Perry a liberal politician and proponent of women's property rights actively petitioned in the House of Commons for the extension of legal and financial autonomy to women. In the first 4 page letter dated 14 March 1856 Perry writes that his female correspondent's "petition in the House was I think well received.get up as many petitions as possible from different places to be presented on or before that day in favor of a change of the law.and have it signed by men as well as women." Notably Perry recognized the need for alliance and collaboration among men and women and he positioned gender equality as a human rights issue.

By the time of his second 4 page letter n.d. missing the opening pages Perry writes his correspondent with points of argument for changes in women's property law. These include "Rights and Responsibilities of Husbands and Wives" "Obligations to Support Children" and "Liability to be sued on her own contracts." While Perry acknowledges that he will need to "study the provisions of the law of this & other countries on the subject" he also asks his correspondent if she and her friends can provide him concrete "examples of the evils sustained under the present law" thus providing him a "cloud of witnesses" against the law as it currently stands.

An important set of letters documenting men and women's collaborative pursuit of equality. unknown books‎
