Cornwell, Patricia
POINT OF ORIGIN
NY: Putnam 1998. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Light soiling at page edges else near fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "Cornwell fans who relish her Kay Scarpetta stories for the postmortem findings will welcome this tale of twisted minds and the gory havoc they cause. Acronym fans will also be pleased. This tale opens with the complete destruction by fire of a Virginia horse farm the owner of which was said to be in London. As consultant to the FBI and the ATF's NRT that's the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms' National Response Team Scarpetta joins the investigation on site and discovers some remains of a young woman in the master bath. Although the origin of the fire remains a mystery research turns up two similar unsolved incidents from years earlier female victims who were dead before the accompanying conflagration. Another fire disguising another murder and the escape of Carrie Grethen evil woman partner of Scarpetta's now dead archenemy Temple Gault from a New York City hospital for the criminally insane ups Scarpetta's anxiety level about both her beloved brilliant niece Lucy who was seduced by Grethen in The Body Farm and her lover psychological profiler Benton Wesley. A third fire covers a third personally devastating death before Scarpetta is able to finger Grethen's new diabolical partner and survive a harrowing finale in a helicopter." -- Publishers Weekly. Corpi, Lucha
CACTUS BLOOD
Houston Texas U.S.A.: Arte Publico Pr 1995. 1st ed. Fine in dust jacket. Author's second mystery featuring the return of Chicana detective Gloria Damasco. ".Upon learning that Sonny Mares an old friend and fellow activist in the United Farmworkers Strike and grape boycott of 1973 has committed suicide Damasco is immediately suspicious-especially when she and a fellow investigator also a former activist go to Sonny's apartment and discover a videotape of a pesticide tank being blown up-and a bunch of grapes. Gloria who struggles with the mixed blessing of being able to foresee the future is also plagued by dreams of a young woman in trouble. As two other friends from the grape-boycott days disappear and a young woman who was raped and suffered pesticide poisoning resurfaces after many years it becomes clear that a time of reckoning with the past is at hand. Corpi writes convincingly about Gloria's attempts to interpret her visions and does a fine job depicting decent people handling dangerous situations. " -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Corpi, Lucha
EULOGY FOR A BROWN ANGEL : A Mystery Novel
Houston TX U.S.A.: Arte Publico Press 1992. 1st ed. A fine copy in a very good plus dust jacket with traces of shelfwear and rubbing to the extremities. This Latin author's first mystery and second novel. Winner of the 1992 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award and the Muticultural Publishers Exchange Book Award of Excellence. "A haze of dazzlingly evocative prose very nearly hides this first mystery's slack plotting. Corpi's ear for Latino rhythms and her feminist leanings produce some original and highly charged narrative moments. But plot still matters. In 1970 a three-year-old boy dies on an L.A. street during the unrest of the National Chicano Moratorium. Gloria Damasco finds the body alerts the police and befriends the child's family. From here on Corpi breezes through the action. The only key witness a street gang member is killed; then Kenyon the cop on the case zeroes in on Gloria's photographer friend as a suspect for no apparent reason. Corpi a poet gives her sleuth occasional clairvoyant moments that lead towards the killer and provide hints of subtle menace. Although careful readers might anticipate the solution and wish for a few more suspects Corpi expands the genre with this work of small triumphs." -- PUBLSHERS WEEKLY. First Edition. Hard Cover. Coulter Francis; California Women Los Angeles
Photograph Album Belonging to Francis Coulter a Young Socialite in Los Angeles c. 1899
Los Angeles and Vicinity 1899. Oblong quarto green cloth 11 ¾ x 5 ¾ inches with 98 photographs. Very Good. Frances Coulter the daughter of a department store magnate in turn-of-the-century Los Angeles was a socialite who regularly made the society pages of Los Angeles newspapers. The collection of photographs here - preserved in their original oblong green cloth album - give a candid look at upper class California in the 1890s. The bulk of the images show Frances and her friends in varied scenes of society gaiety: dressed formally on the beaches staging goofy scenes including a mock proposal drinking from a water hose and many scenes involving costumes and umbrellas. Some of the photographs interestingly were taken with a Kodak No. 2 camera which was in production until 1895 producing distinct circular images. Some of the scenes show the beaches of Santa Monica. Overall the collection offers an uncommon look into Los Angeles at the end of the 1890s when the city had only 100000 residents. Frances's father B.F. Coulter was a minister from Kentucky and some of the photographs show the Coulters at home. A very good collection images with slight fading album with a slightly musty odor but overall well preserved. books
