‎GRACQ, BRETON,‎

‎"J" IS FOR JUDGMENT‎

‎New York NY U.S.A.: Holt 1993 1993. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "In her 10th alphabet adventure southern California PI Kinsey Milhone is working again for California Fidelity navigating her way through a plot-driven tale that will remind readers of her earliest appearances despite Grafton's deft introduction of new material. Shady financier Wendell Jaffe has recently been decreed dead five years after his real estate empire collapsed and he disappeared from his beloved 35-foot ketch off the coast an apparent suicide. California Fidelity has just paid his widow $500000. But then Jaffe is spotted in Mexico with another woman. Kinsey's investigation lands her in some tough spots--such as a drunken stranger's hotel room where she pretends to be a hooker--gets her shot at and leads to a dramatic resolution at sea. It also introduces her to a genealogist who requires Kinsey to revise her notion of herself as an orphan alone in the world. While maintaining full control of her plot's variously colored threads many of which are tied to Jaffe's family his 18-year-old son is on the lam from a murder charge Grafton cameos such familiar characters as Kinsey's octogenarian landlord Henry his older brother William and Rose the neighborhood bar owner. But the spotlight remains on Kinsey who without a love interest to distract her sticks to the case at hand and tries with limited success to assimilate the existence of a not too distant family whom readers will likely learn more of in "K." : -- Publishers Weekly. ‎"N" IS FOR NOOSE‎

‎N.Y.: Henry Holt & Co 1998. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped with protective mylar cover. Kinsey Millhone should have done something else--she should have turned the car in the direction of home. Instead she was about to put herself in the gravest jeopardy of her career. Tom Newquist had been a detective in the Nota Lake sheriff's office--a tough honest cop respected by everyone. When he died suddenly the townsfolk were saddened but not surprised: Just shy of sixty-five Newquist worked too hard smoked too much and exercised too little. That plus an appetite for junk food made him a poster boy for an American Heart Association campaign. Newquist's widow didn't doubt the coroner's report. But what Selma couldn't accept was not knowing what had so bothered Tom in the last six weeks of his life. What was it that had made him prowl restlessly at night that had him brooding constantly Selma Newquist wanted closure and the only way she'd get it was if she found out what it was that had so bedeviled her husband. Kinsey should have dumped the case. It was vague and hopeless like looking for a needle in a haystack. Instead she set up shop in Nota Lake where she found that looking for a needle in a haystack can draw blood. Very likely her own."N" Is for Noose: a novel in which Kinsey Millhone becomes the target and an entire town seems in for the kill. . 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Book. ‎T is for Trespass‎

‎New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2007. First Edition. Hardcover. 400 pages. A Kinsey Millhone Mystery No. 20. In what may be her most unsettling novel to date Sue Grafton's T is for Trespass is also her most direct confrontation with the forces of evil. Beginning slowly with the day-to-day life of a private eye Grafton suddenly shifts from the voice of Kinsey Millhone to that of Solana Rojas introducing readers to a chilling sociopath. Rojas is not her birth name. It is an identity she cunningly stole an identity that gives her access to private caregiving jobs. The true horror of the novel builds with excruciating tension as the reader foresees the awfulness that lies ahead. The suspense lies in whether Millhone will realize what is happening in time to intervene. Though set in the late eighties T is for Trespass could not be more topical: identity theft; elder abuse; betrayal of trust; the breakdown in the institutions charged with caring for the weak and the dependent. It reveals a terrifying but all-too-real rip in the social fabric. Once again Grafton opens up new territory with startling results. . G. P. Putnam's Sons hardcover‎

‎U is for Undertow‎

‎New York: A Marian Wood Book/Putnam. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. 416 pages. A Kinsey Millhone Mystery No. 21. Through twenty excursions into the dark side of the human soul Sue Grafton has never written the same book twice. And so it is with this her twenty-first. Once again she breaks genre formulas giving us a twisting complex surprise-filled and totally satisfying thriller. It's April 1988 a month before Kinsey Millhone's thirty-eighth birthday and she's alone in her office doing paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced. He has a preppy air about him and looks as if he'd be carded if he tried to buy booze but Michael Sutton is twenty-seven an unemployed college dropout. Twenty-one years earlier a four-year-old girl disappeared. A recent reference to her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories. Sutton now believes he stumbled on her lonely burial when he was six years old. He wants Kinsey's help in locating the child's remains and finding the men who killed her. It's a long shot but he's willing to pay cash up front and Kinsey agrees to give him one day. As her investigation unfolds she discovers Michael Sutton has an uneasy relationship with the truth. In essence he's the boy who cried wolf. Is his current story true or simply one more in a long line of fabrications Grafton moves the narrative between the eighties and the sixties changing points of view building multiple subplots and creating memorable characters. Gradually we see how they all connect. But at the beating center of the novel is Kinsey Millhone sharp-tongued observant a loner . A Marian Wood Book/Putnam hardcover‎
