Single sheet (175 x 125 mm) engraved on one side only, within a single black line boarder, some light spotting. Possibly a late eighteenth-century reprint? The joint proprietors of a children's clothing shop, Mary (1699-1741) and Ann (1701-1771) Hogarth, wee sisters to the famed William Hogarth (1697-1764). "in his 1730 trade card for his sisters, you sense he is somewhat bemused by the subject he portrays. A youth and his family are gathered round and appear to be engaged in a bit of drama, with arms gesturing. The gentleman is wearing a long coat with turned back cuffs and the indication of fancy stitching at button holes and pockets. The sisters sold "ready made frocks?stript Dimity & Flanel Waistcoats." A coat hangs in the background and what appear to be vest pieces or patterns are on the table to the right. You can just make out Hogarth's name in the lower left, as well as that of his frequent collaborator, engraver Thomas Cook. "?silkdamask.org Heal, London Tradesmen's Cards, 1925. p. 76.

Holt, Emily.
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ETIQUETTE: What to Write, What to Do, What to Wear, What to Say; A Book of Manners for Everyday Use. Revised and enlarged edition.
500 p. + Photo illustrations including several in color. 8vo. 8.5 x 7.75" Attractive original decorated full cloth binding. A wonderful record of proper behavior for the "upper classes" - just as World War One was threatening that way of life. Among the broad subjects are: introductions; dinners; table manners; engagements; weddings; balls & dances; luncheons; teas; theater and opera; house parties; musicales; garden parties; funerals; christenings; bachelor hospitalities; servants; correspondence; travel (including a nice bit on shipboard behavior); sports and games; etc. This edition is especially interesting because it includes photographs (one in color) of the enormously famous dance team Irene and Vernon Castle (later immortalized in the movies by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers). "The Castles were undoubtedly the most famous ballroom dancers of their day, and while they did not invent social dancing, they were among the first to make a career of it. Vernon was tall and slightly built, and Irene willowy, boyish, and yet thoroughly feminine. Together they were a breath of air for a world stuck in the stodgy Edwardian mode. And their brief, almost incandescent career stands as a metaphor of an entire glittering, fragile world soon to be shattered by the horror of world war." - From paragonragtime. ETIQ 1

DEAD CENTER
Scribners 1994 April 1st ed. Advance uncorrected Page Proofs fine in wraps. Brooklyn cop Nikki Trakos. "Introduced in Dead Ahead Brooklyn police detective Nikki Trakos makes a welcome second appearance. A smart nose-to-the-grindstone cop who at 31 occasionally wonders if she should be married to a man instead of her job Nikki is now in charge of her first major case the murder and sexual mutilation of a high-profile Manhattan politician. Given the victim's prominence Nikki knows she must get results fast. One problem is her new partner an old-line cynic who resents having to work under a woman younger than his daughter. Another problem is her ex-partner and ex-lover Dave who doesn't understand her request for some "space." The victim's mutilation and unsavory private life link the case to an old one of Dave's. Nikki and he combine investigations and uncover other murders as they comb Brooklyn and Manhattan for information. The sexual tension between the two cops combines with their tough original professional work finally resulting in credible satisfying resolutions on both fronts." --- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.
