‎Ce livre inclut en espagnol et français le poème de Pablo Neruda, Tina Modotti ha muerto (1942) paru in Tercera residencia, 1947, ainsi que des lettres de Modotti a Weston, des photos de Weston dans lesquelles pose Tina et bien sûr ses propres photos, dont le grand format, 35 cm.des photographies, des textes et des documents réunis par Riccardo Toffoletti du Comité Tina Modotti à Udine.Tina Modotti (1896-1942), photographe et révolutionnaire, amante de Weston, amie de Frida Kahlo et de Manuel Alvarez Bravo, fit de sa vie une oeuvre d'art dans le Mexique en pleine ébullition. Elle photographie l'art populaire, les inégalités de la société, les portraits des gens célèbres, des paysans et des ouvriers, collabore à El Machete et Mexican Folkways. Ses photos les plus fortes étaient celles qu'elle créait par pur plaisir, des formes sensuelles, élancées, abstraites ou réelles reprenant des symboles progressistes qui allaient influencer largement la photographie de son époque. Issue d'une famille pauvre de Udine dans le nord de l'Italie, Tina Modotti part à l'âge de 17 ans rejoindre son père émigré à San Fransisco. Elle tombe amoureuse d'un jeune peintre et poète qui l'introduit dans les milieux artistiques de Hollywood, l'épouse et joue dans plusieurs films les divas exotiques. En 1920, elle rencontre le grand photographe américain Edward Weston qui est séduit par sa beauté sauvage et sa créativité. A partir de 1925 Tina Modotti entreprend une oeuvre nouvelle et sensuelle qui conjugue les préoccupations formelles, sociales et personnelles. Elle s'inscrit au Parti communiste mexicain, elle défraye la chronique par son activité politique et ses nouvelles amours avant de retourner en Europe et en URSS où elle milite pour le Secours rouge international. Elle partage sa vie avec Vittorio Vidali, membre du Komintem et "révolutionnaire professionnel" d'origine italienne. Avec lui elle se rend en Espagne, participe à la guerre civile et retourne au Mexique où elle meurt à 46 ans, seule, dans le taxi qui la ramène chez elle, la nuit du 5 janvier 1942. Ce livre permet pour la première fois en France d'aborder dans son ensemble l'oeuvre photographique de cette grande artiste et de suivre sa trajectoire à travers des textes et des documents réunis par Riccardo Toffoletti du Comité Tina Modotti à Udine, spécialiste et passionné de l'oeuvre de la photographe : Cet ouvrage ne veut surtout pas être une célébration, ni ne procède d'une démarche d'historicisation. C'est un hommage à une jeune femme qui avec un coeur valeureux et un passeport d'émigrante, est partie d'une petite ville du nord-est de l'Italie et est allée au-delà des mers, a traversé le monde du cinéma puis est entrée dans l'histoire et dans la culture : une vie de liberté, à l'image des murales épiques de Diego Rivera, des vers de Pablo Neruda et de Rafael Alberti. Front fixed endpaper bears bookplate of the Rev. J. Congreve Overslade. John Congreve opened Overslade private classical school near Rugby England by 1854. In the 1860s George Farncomb Wright became his partner in the school; they dissolved their partnership for "the tuition of young gentlemen" in 1871. The Backwoods of Canada was by English author Catherine Parr Strickland Traill 1802-1899 who emigrated to Upper Canada with her husband and sister in 1832. It was one of the first in the genre of Canadian nature essays and the first of several books she wrote about her new land. An evidently well-received collection of nine hundred recipes following closely upon the first edition of only two years previous with the same 151 pages. Southern favorites stand in relief: Southern Egg Bread Okra Gumbo Bishop Whipple Pudding Ambrosia Owendaw Asparagus Loaf Blackeye Peas Elder Blossom Wine Creole Pralines. But it would be misleading to truncate the story there for the Women of Trinity Guild could venture out as eagerly as their counterparts elsewhere from Almond Bisque and Lobster Canapes to Queen of Trifles and Banberry sic Tarts. Marginalia on page 110 comments on the Sponge Cake fine ".grand but a lot of work". For more local color an advertisement on the rear of wrappers is for "Dowdy's Pit Bar-B-Q Fish-Chili Lee Highway." ~ Florence is a well-known constituent municipality of The Shoals in Alabama's northwestern corner the birthplace of W. C. Handy and by extension it is often said the birthplace of the Blues. The seat of Lauderdale County the city and the surrounding region had become prosperous through its abundant access to water power early in the nineteenth century. Though not the first Episcopalian congregation established in Alabama - Anglicans had already settled in Mobile and Tuscaloosa - Trinity Church founded in 1836 and still an active community lays claim to the title of oldest parish in the Tennessee Valley. ~ Several pages splash-stained but text unobscured throughout. Stapled in blue wrappers titled in black; stained and faded but nonetheless intact. Good. A lengthy gift presentation handwritten in ink on page ix addressed to "a bride" as per page 48 with corresponding recommendations marking several recipes. Scarce. OCLC locates no copies of this second edition though one copy of the first edition and three copies of the revised third edition of 1943 are reported; none of these editions in Brown Cagle or Cather.
