BLUE WOLF: An Alix Thorssen Mystery SIGNED COPY
New York NY U.S.A.: Walker & Company 2001. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Beautiful copy. SIGNED COPY signature only by the author on the title page. "Alix who owns a gallery in Jackson Hole Wyo. agrees to help stage an art auction to benefit wildlife conservation in the Yellowstone-Grand Teton ecosystem. Planning the auction raises longstanding simmering conflicts between ranchers and environmentalists to a fast boil. Two events involving a wolf bring the environmental fight to a head: a local ranchhand who shoots a wolf faces prosecution under the Endangered Species laws while a reclusive artist whom Alix represents has contributed to the auction a haunting portrait of a wolf a painting that the committee chair refuses to allow in. The sad-looking wolf on this book's dust jacket lacks the ferociousness of the wolf portrait. The strong feelings that the wolf engenders are backdrop for the actual mystery: the painter concerned about a possible cover-up asks Alix to look into the death of a teenage boy in a hunting accident 25 years ago." -- Publishers Weekly. McConnell, Beatrice (Assistant Director, Bureau of Women and Children)
Fourteen and Fifteen Year Old Children in Industry; Special Bulletin No. 21
Harrisburg PA: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry Bureau of Women and Children 1927. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. 29 3 pages. Folding Chart on weekly hours and earnings. Tables. Footnotes. List of Special Publications. Cover scuffed and has wear and soiling and a small piece of the upper edge of front is missing. Charlotte E. Carr was the Director of the Bureau of Women and Children. Charles A. Waters was the Secretary of the Department of Labor and Industry. Foreword by Charlotte E. Carr. Pennsylvania was at the time the second largest industrial state in which children were traditionally employed. Also at that time there had been no state-wide basis attempted to gather authoritative unbiased information regarding the conditions under which its children were being employed. In Pennsylvania no child under the age of 14 could be certificated to work. The Child Labor Law regulated in the main the conditions of work for 14- and 15-year-old employed children delegating the responsibility for the supervision of these children to two state departments The Department of Labor and Industry and the Department of Public Instruction. These two departments collaborated in this first official study to secure information regarding 14 and 15-year-old workers in the Commonwealth. McConnell succeeded Carr as Director of the Bureau. Born in 1890 Charlotte Elizabeth Carr attended Miss Madiera's School in Washington D.C. She earned a B.A. from Vassar College in 1915. Following graduation Carr served as an investigator of the State Charities Aid in New York City 1915-1917. She was appointed Assistant Director of the Bureau of Women in Industry of the New York Department of Labor 1923. Two years later she was appointed head of the Section of Women and Children in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. In 1929 Gifford Pinchot governor of Pennsylvania appointed her the first female Secretary of the Department of Labor and Industry. During the Depression Carr accepted an appointment as Director of Hull House the settlement house started by Jane Addams in Chicago. Carr ushered in changes that included replacing volunteers with paid workers and appointing professional staff to head each department. She created two new departments: the Community Service Department which initiated improvements in community housing schools and recreational facilities; and the Workers' Education Department which provided instruction in labor law and collective bargaining. In 1943 she served as chair of the New York City War Manpower Commission. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Labor and Industry, Bureau of Women and Children paperback

CLEAN BREAK: A Kate Brannigan Mystery Uncorrected Proof
N.Y.: Scribner 1995. 1st Edition October 1995. A near fine copy of the Uncorrected Proof in wrappers. "The fourth Kate Brannigan mystery finds the British equivalent of Kinsey Millhone trying to crack a case in which a ring of smash-and-grabbers is stealing artwork from country estates. Kate is involved because her security firm was responsible for one of the burgled homes. The owners of the estates are reluctant to bring in the police because so much of their income is generated by tourist excursions through their homes and they fear the publicity. In one of the homes the intruders' activity is recorded and Kate recognizes one of them--it's Dennis Kate's close pal and her connection to the criminal underworld. She has some hard choices to make but is willing to put them off if she can recover the stolen property. Dennis points her in the right direction but soon the case takes a far more sinister turn with people connected to the thefts turning up dead all over the countryside. When a trip to Italy reveals Mob involvement Kate realizes the stakes are much higher than a few pieces of stolen art and that her life means nothing to those involved in the crimes. Brannigan is tough funny and sometimes profane. " -- Booklist. 1st Edition. Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Book. Scribner Paperback
