Mevlevi Order Women Obermuller and Son Photographers
Cabinet Card of Marie Bayrooty in Stunt Pose Holding American and Turkish Flags Circa 1905
New York: Obermuller and Son 1905. Silver gelatin print 3 ¾ x 5 ⅜ inches on larger mount. Fine. Marie Bayrooty was the only female member of the Bayrooty Brothers Oriental Troupe who performed on the Barnum and Bailey Circus sideshow. A famous 'whirling dervish' - as members of the Mevlevi Order are known colloquially - she broke a record by whirling 2990 times in 37 minutes in 1906 per the The New York Times who described her as of Syrian descent. The Times in the typically dismissive tone of the day describe her performance as such: "Mary Bayrooty the Syrian girl who last year whirled for thirty-two minutes without cessation making something like 2240 revolutions established a new record yesterday afternoon in Barnum & Bailey's Freak Hall. She made 2990 twirls in thirty-seven minutes. This is a new world record. when the last note died and the last whirl had been achieved Marie was fresh as paint. She ran across the floor to the nearest reporter and pinned a rose on the lapel of his coat remaining until her fame had been suitably sounded. Then she sat down and gave the other freaks a chance." - New York Times April 2 1906. A fine example on a very good mount. Obermuller and Son unknown books

Mexico. Women
Colonial Mexican Manuscript Document Concerning the Establishment of a "Casa de Recogimiento" for Women in Puebla
Puebla: June 21 1736. Very good. 2pp. on a single folded folio sheet with integral blank docketed on verso. Minor creasing and edge wear light foxing. An intriguing manuscript document from colonial Mexico concerning the opening of a "casa de recogidas" more commonly known as a recogimiento in Puebla in 1736. The establishment is referenced in the first line of the present document as a "casa de Recogimiento." The title of the docketing reads: Fundacion del nuevo colegio de mujeres solteras y casadas" "Foundation of the new school for single and married women". A recogimiento was recently defined by University of Illinois professor Megan Gargiulo as "a prison-like establishment for 'fallen' women" in New Spain "Debility and Domination in Recogimientos de Mujeres in Late Colonial Mexico" in Dieciocho Fall 2021 pp.327-348. Gargiulo explains further: "Recogimientos de mujeres were Spanish institutions exported to New Spain and other Spanish colonies. The 1726 Diccionario de autoridades defines recogimiento as 'el lugar o casa en que viven retiradas en clausúra algunas mugeres por penitencia o voluntaria o forzada' 'the place or house where some women live in seclusion as penance either voluntarily or forcibly'; these women were called recogidas. They served to punish and reform women accused of crimes ranging from moral offenses like public drunkenness concubinage and prostitution to violent offenses such as murder. While in recogimiento women were engaged in uncompensated labor including spinning wool and washing hospital linens."<br /> <br /> The present document is highly informative regarding some of the particulars within the recogimiento. A rough translation reads as follows: "Having recognized the need for a House of Retreat where single or married women may live who being Spanish are not suitable for the existing house of retreats and where they should be deposited for as long as our vicar general the purveyor deems appropriate. We demand and establish as a house of retreat some houses that belonged to Don Antonio Preneo a priest living in Atlixco for which he has a deed in favor of the mitre with the obligation to pay the mitre twelve reales every Saturday for the sung mass to be said to our lady. These houses are on the street called 'Virgin Girls Street' which borders on the east side with the old school for the Virgin Girls of Our Lady of the Conception and on the midday side with the new school that we also built with the name of Saint Joseph and Saint Teresa separating it from the aforementioned school for the Virgin Girls to which it was attached as appropriate for their greater comfort and better education. And on the other hand with houses that are the property of said school for virgin girls which house has a communication and door with the aforementioned new school through which the deposited ones must enter only to hear Mass on feast days and to confess and take Communion in the direct way accompanied by the Rector who is to be appointed by us and our superiors. They must return to their seclusion the Rector not allowing them to speak or stop with the girls. Then the doors will be closed and will not be opened again except to hear Mass confess and take Communion. The persons who are to enter said depository must be purely Spanish and by our order along with that of our Provisor and Vicar General and under no circumstances shall anyone who is not purely Spanish be allowed to enter. Those who are to be deposited by their husbands and others who are required to be deposited at their own expense and those who are needed at our discretion and that of the Provisor Vicar General who is or is not of said Girls' School are to be maintained. He is obliged to take care of said Depository House so that they live with complete devotion and good example adhering to the direction that is set aside for the Rector for the distribution of exercises." A rare eighteenth-century manuscript document on the establishment of a recogimiento de mujeres in Puebla. June 21 unknown
