This long-term Republican representative from U.S. Grant's adoptive hometown of Galena Illinois served this district in Northwestern Illinois for fourteen terms 1933-61. Partly-printed DS 1p 8½" X 11" Jo Daviess County IL 1926 October 15. Very good. Faint age toning. "Declaration of Intention" document issued by the U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service for one Andrew Boeckl a 24-year-old marble worker from Bavaria Germany who had arrived in New York in 1924. Most interesting is the printed text noting that "It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty and particularly to The German Reich" these last three words inked in -- but better yet is the following printed text: "I am not an anarchist; I am not a polygamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy." Entirely filled out in Allen's attractive hand in black ink and at lower right as clerk of the circuit court he signs boldly. A delightful provocative period piece reminiscent of the oaths of allegiance signed by Confederate soldiers at the close of the Civil War. The Third Reich and anarchy statements are classic 1920s with fascism encroaching upon Europe and anarchists such as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman capturing the headlines. The polygamy content seems a bit less obvious no waves of anti-polygamy sentiment sweeping the country but simply represents a typical post-World War One reaction against extremism of any sort. unknown

Esemplare ben conservato.

- Imprimerie Lenepveu, Paris s.d. [mars 1900], 49,8x65,2cm, une affiche. - Affiche originale lithographiée en couleurs représentant Théophile Delcassé sous les traits d'un caniche de cirque. Pliures transversales et infimes déchirures marginales sans manque. Diffusés entre octobre 1899 et décembre 1900 dans une France embrasée par l'Affaire Dreyfus, ces immenses portraits à charge en couleurs sont l'uvre de Victor Lenepveu qui annonça la parution de 150 puis 200 dessins et n'en réalisa finalement qu'une cinquantaine. En dépit de la loi sur la liberté de la presse de 1881 permettant la diffusion d'une imagerie politiquement subversive, la parution de ce panthéon cauchemardesque fut interrompue sur ordre du Ministère de l'Intérieur. La fragilité du papier et l'imposant format de ces très violentes affiches, ainsi que leur saisie presque immédiate par la police, contribuèrent à la disparition de ces caricatures qui marquèrent cependant fortement l'opinion publique. Ces horreurs bénéficièrent d'une large promotion de la part des journaux antisémites qui annoncèrent un tirage fantasmé de 300.000 exemplaires, insinuant ainsi le succès des idées antisémites dans la population. Le 1er octobre 1899, L'Intransigeant annonce la parution du Musée des horreurs dans ses colonnes?: «?Un dessinateur de beaucoup d'esprit, au coup de crayon d'un comique intense, M. V. Lenepveu, a eu l'heureuse idée d'inaugurer une série de portraits des vendus les plus célèbres de la tourbe dreyfusarde. Le titre de cette série «?Musée des Horreurs?» est suffisamment suggestif et indique bien ce qu'il promet. [...] C'est la maison Hayard qui mettra en vente, à partir d'aujourd'hui, le numéro 1 de cette désopilante série.?» D'abord camelot puis libraire-éditeur, Napoléon Hayard (dit Léon Hayard) se spécialisa en effet dans la commercialisation d'éphémères et de placards anti-dreyfusards et antisémites. Il ne subsiste cependant aujourd'hui que de très rares exemplaires en bel état de ces caricatures pamphlétaires qui participèrent à la fracture sociale et politique de la France. Publiés en plein essor de la presse écrite - en même temps que le célèbre «?J'accuse?!?» d'Émile Zola - ces documents de propagande eurent notamment un impact significatif sur les jeunes générations et préfigurent la violence idéologique du XXè siècle. Opera assai poco comune che presenta un'ampia introduzione storica seguita da una dettagliata descrizione della città suddivisa nei principali quartieri. Edizione originale ed unica. Non in cat. Athens Greece: Deputy Ministry of Press and Information December 5 1944. 1944. Very good. - Folio a 12-3/4 inch high by 9-1/2 inch wide broadside printed on newsprint. A two-line banner title centered at the top is followed by two columns of text with the contents justified left below centered headings. The publication info and the date are printed above the second column. The broadside is toned and folded both vertically and horizontally with minor pinprick holes. Very good. <p>The text is in Greek and our translations may be subject to some corrections.<p>During the late hours of December 4 1944 and the early hours of December 5 Lieut.-General Scobie GOC British Forces in Greece proclaimed martial law in Athens and in Piraeus the port of Athens following violence on December 3rd and the declaration of a general strike. The broadside publishes Winston Churchill's statement supporting his General. "The Prime Minister wishes to make known that the announcement of the 1st December by General Scobie to the Greek people stressing the need for unity and expressing our full support for the current Greek Government was made with the knowledge and full approval of the Government of her Majesty."<p>Following this is a statement concerning order: ".General Scobie has taken all recommended measures to fully reestablish order. .English troops guard Public Facilities and simultaneously the reclamation of Police Departments has begun. The Greek people should be certain that order will be completely enforced."<p>There is a statement that "In yesterday's first court day of the Special Collaborators' Court the S.S. associate and member of the 'BUND' the infamous Giannopoulos was sentenced to death." The BUND organization and its leader Aginor Giannopoulos trained a battalion of Greek volunteers who fought in SS and Brandenburgers units. According to the broadside 200 members of ELAS in the suburb of Nea Ionia were disarmed as were 1200 near Psychiko.<p>There is a brief report on the events leading up to martial law: "In the march on the day before yesterday organized by the Communist Party protesters threw a grenade and shot at the house of the Prime Minister George Papandreou on Kifisias street. The leader of the protesters officer of ELAS and known communist Architect Provellegios was arrested."<p>Finally there is a statement on food shortages. ".due to the three-day labor strike the steamboats full of food meant to be distributed to the Greek People anchored in Piraeus harbor remains unloaded."<p>RARE. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt withr aised bands, label with gilt lettering, slightly rubbed, some discolouring, marbled edges. Sabin 20201; Leclerc 453; Muller 975 (all listing the first edition). Second edition, first published in 1767. This work is largely based on a manuscript by P. Champion, Jesuit, who had started having a life of Palafox printed, but the impression was stopped. Dinouart says in his preface he was happy in being able to procure the entire mansucript of Champion which enabled him to complete the life of the celebrated bishop (Sabin).Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (June 26, 1600 - October 1, 1659), a Spanish politician, administrator, and Catholic clergyman in 17th century Spain and viceregal Mexico. Palafox was the Bishop of Puebla (1640-1655), and the interim Archbishop of Mexico (1640-1642). He also held political office, from June 10, 1642 to November 23, 1642 as the Viceroy of New Spain. He lost a high-profile struggle with the Jesuits in New Spain, resulting in a recall to Spain, to the minor Diocese of Osma in Old Castile. In 1639 Philip IV nominated him, and Pope Urban VIII appointed him, as Bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles in viceroyal Mexico. Puebla de los Ángeles was the second largest city in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (viceroyal México) then, and is the present day City of Puebla. He was consecrated at Madrid on December 27, 1639. As bishop, Palafox arrived in Veracruz on June 24, 1640. He was in the company of the new Viceroy of New Spain, Diego López Pacheco, 7th Duke of Escalona, whom he had gotten to know during the voyage. That same ship brought an Irishman, William Lamport, known in New Spain as Don Guillén de Lombardo y Guzmán, who played a role in political turmoil during the 1640s. Palafox was also named Visitador (royal inspector, representative of the king), to investigate the two previous viceroys.Palafox founded the Biblioteca Palafoxiana on September 5, 1646, stocking it with five thousand books of science and philosophy. He also founded the Dominican Convent of Santa Inés, the Colleges of San Pedro and San Pablo, and the girls school Purísima Concepción. He amended the by-laws of the seminary of San Juan, and worked diligently on completing the cathedral, which was dedicated April 18, 1649. As bishop, Palafox y Mendoza distinguished himself by his efforts to protect the Native Americans, forbidding any methods of conversion other than persuasion. - Small stamp on page v: Toulouse 1777, and a scribbled name . A good copy.
