(JAURES Jean) LENEPVEU Victor
- Imprimerie Lenepveu, Paris s.d. [janvier 1900], 49,8x65,2cm, une affiche. - Musée des horreurs - Original colour lithographed poster - n° 14 "L'éléphant du Jourdain" Imprimerie Lenepveu | Paris [January 1900] | 49,8 x 65,2 cm | one poster Original colour lithographed poster depicting Jean Jaurès as an elephant sitting on a chair and holding a bottle of "water from the Jordan". Until then portrayed as a dog - caricaturists mocking his aggressiveness - Jean Jaurès is here, for the first time, represented as an elephant. It is a question here of highlighting his potbelly and his pachyderm silhouette, but we can, nevertheless, highlight the great dignity of this massive personality with a high gaze. The water from the Jordan is held on one of his hoofs and alludes to the rumour that he had his son baptised in the scared river, thus acting against his anticlerical policy. Despite the caricaturist's desire to ridicule Jean Jaurès, the choice of the elephant, a symbol of strength, prosperity and wisdom, is ultimately positive. Transverse folds and tiny, minor, marginal tears. Circulated between October 1899 and December 1900 in a France set ablaze by the Dreyfus Affair, these immense colour portraits are the work of Victor Lenepveu, who announced the publication of 150 and then 200 drawings, before finally producing only around fifty. Despite the 1881 law on the freedom of press allowing the dissemination of a politically subversive image, the publication of this nightmarish pantheon was interrupted by order of the Ministry of the Interior. The fragility of the paper and the imposing size of these very violent posters, as well as their almost immediate seizure by the police, contributed to the disappearance of these caricatures which strongly left a mark on public opinion. These horreurs were widely promoted by anti-Semitic newspapers that announced a fantasised print of 300,000 copies, thus insinuating the success of anti-Semitic ideas in the population. "An artist of great spirit, with an intense comical pencil stroke, M. V. Lenepveu, had the happy idea of inaugurating a series of portraits of the most famous sellouts of the Dreyfusard rabble. The title of this series "?Musée des Horreurs" is sufficiently suggestive and is a good indicator of what it promises. [...] It is Maison Hayard that will put up for sale, from today, issue number 1 of this hilarious series." First a peddler then a bookseller-publisher, Napoléon Hayard (known as Léon Hayard) specialised in the marketing of anti-Dreyfusard and anti-Semitic ephemera and advertisements. Today, however, copies in good condition of these pamphlet caricatures, which contributed to the social and political divide of France, are very rare. Published in the booming written press - at the same time as Émile Zola's famous "J'accuse?!" - these propaganda materials had a significant impact on the younger generations and preceded the ideological violence of the 20th century.

3 volumi in 8 (cm 15 x 21,5), pp. XVI + 408; 400; 350. Legatura ottocentesca in mezza tela con tassello in pelle al dorso con titolo.

Amsterdam, septembre 1, 1689 - octobre 1, 1690 (Paris, EDHIS, 1976). 228 pp. 4to. Modern leather. Well executed reprint of this rare and important work. Edition limited to 150 numbered copies and 30 copies not destined for the trade. This reprint is since long out-of-print. Above anything else, the Soupirs de la France Esclave ..... is a vehement protest against the absolutism of Louis XIV and strongly pleads for the rights of the people: 'les peuples ont établi les Rois pour conserver les personnes, la vie, la liberté et les biens des particuliers'; but the French government has become so tyrannical that it now sees everything as its rightful property; properly speaking there is no State or government but only the conveniences of the King. It should be noted that the work is not an apology of egalitarianism: it blames Louis XIV for having abolished the privileges of the different classes by which it has also erased all distinctions between the classes. The first three memoirs describe the oppression and the tyranny under which the people suffer and the general misery. The next two memoirs reveals by which means the court has established it absolut power and its abuses, in the memoirs 6-8 the author maintains that the crown is elective and the Salic Law of no value, that power rests with the Estates general ('les dépositaires du pouvoir') and superior to the King and that the 'Parlement' has been created to represent these Estats general. The memoirs 9 and 10 deal with the 'Grand Conseil', the 'maires du palais', 'des pairs, des ducs, comtes, etc.' who once were independant but are today no more than slaves. The memoirs 11-15 deal with the earlier periods of France when there was no standing army and oppressing taxes and how the monarchy can be brought back to its former state.'Cette publication fut naturellement l'objet d'une surveillance spéciale de la police de Louis XIV. The work is also often attributed to Michel Le Vassor and it has also been supposed that Jurieu is the author of the last 2 memoirs only.

(l'Auditeur National).
L'AUDITEUR NATIONAL. Convention Nationale. Declaration of the Rights of Man. 60 consecutive issues of this significant political journal consisting of numbers 222 through 282 dated "Du mercredi 1 mai 1793" through "Du dimanche 30 juin 1793" "L'an second de la republique Francaise" bound together in one volume.
Paris: Imprimerie du Journal rue du Foin-Saint-Jacques 1793. 1793. Good. - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5 inches wide. 60 issues bound together into contemporary full vellum with holographic title labels on the spine. Faded ink annotations on the covers would suggest that the vellum covers themselves were recycled at the time from even earlier documents. The covers are stained the labels are chipped and the bottom portion of the spine is heavily chipped. 480 pages in all each issue consisting of 8 pages with a banner title at the head of the first page of each issue and the publisher's credits printed at the bottom of the last page of each issue. The bottom front corners of the pages are heavily dampstained. There is minor worming with very slight loss to the first issue #222 and a very minor wormhole to issues 233 through 235 with occasional loss of a letter. A small piece torn from the bottom corner of the last leaf of issue #227 results in the loss of but one letter. Pages 5 and 6 of issue #244 are torn but without loss although there is some slight loss to pages 6 and 7 where the pages once stuck to each other. Several page corners are creased. There is some rare occasional underlining in ink with even fewer discreet marginal annotations. A good consecutive run of this scarce periodical covering the National Convention during the years it forged France's first republican constitution during the French Revolution. <p>Originally titled "Auditeur national journal de legislation de politique et de litterature" when it began publication in 1791 the sub-title was removed as of September 22 1792. - Ref.: Eugene Hatin's "Bibliographie historique et critique de la presse periodique francaise.".<p>This daily evening newspaper provides a day by day account of the events that took place during one of the most remarkable periods in French history. Among the important events of this period were the uprising of the Paris Commune against the Convention the formation of the Extraordinary Commission of Twelve Commission extraordinaire des Douze the revolt of June 2 1793 which led to the expulsion of the Girondists and the rise of the Jacobins the establishment of a maximum price for bread and most important the debate which ultimately led to the ratification on June 24 1793 of the new Constitution. This Constitution included the expanded "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen" Declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen. It was this period of time that set the stage for the Reign of Terror.<p>The publication of the articles chapitres of the first republican constitution also known as the the "Montagnard" Constitution commences in the June 12 1793 issue of the newspaper No. 264. The 36 articles of the DECLARATION DES DROITS DE L'HOMME ET DU CITOYEN are published in the issues of June 24/25 1793. These rights expanded from the 1789 Declaration now included the abolition of slavery the right of rebellion the right to work to public education and public assistance and the right of association.<p>The writing of this constitution is often attributed to Marie-Jean Herault de Sechelles.<p>RARE.
