The Love of Truth Mark the Boy
Germantown PA: Germantown Print Works. Textile. Good. An appealing illustrated broadside on cloth bearing a very early appearance of the famous "I cannot tell a lie" cherry tree story. Collins Threads of History says it was printed by the Germantown Print Works in Pennsylvania ca. 1806. The story itself which was invented by Washington's biographer Mason Locke Weems first appeared in print that same year in the fifth edition of Weems' Life of Washington. Aspiring to present George Washington as an ideal role model for young Americans Weems embellished and invented biographical details to help demonstrate the founding father's honesty and other virtues. Measures approximately 11 x 11.75 inches. Typical staining some fraying at the right edge but entire printed border often found compromised is present. A nice example.
Amsterdam: Herman Uytwerf 1738. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes pp. xiv 370 6; 430 6 with six folding plates and a folding map. Modern full-leather with marbled endpapers. Title pages clipped at upper and lower edges; damage with losses to three plates repairs to back of map; all else very good. Le Beau was transported from France to Quebec in 1729 probably on a charge of libertinism. According to his own account he was appointed a clerk in the Beaver Office and then chief clerk in the King's warehouses. Bored and depressed he stole gunpowder from the warehouses and set off for New England. A warrant for his arrest was issued but he escaped encountering many perils natural and human before he reached Boston and eventually sailed for Holland. His ensuing work on his adventures in North America includes much detail on Huron Iroquois and Algonquin customs but its style has been dubbed fanciful. Howes L-167 describes the work as "a basically veracious narrative from competent authorities though somewhat romanticised." The Dictionary of Canadian Biography argues that Le Beau "deserves credit for painting an exact picture of the customs and character of the Canadians" noting that "the best chapters are those that discuss the habits of beaver and the religious ideas of the Indians." Phillips Hugh
Mid-Georgian London
London: Collins 1964. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 321 pp. Profusely illustrated social and cultural history and appreciation of Hogarthian London. Delightful work captures the hustle and bustle of city during the heyday of the Kit Kat Club Alexander Pope George Handel Chippendale etc. Here find magnificent trade cards for long forgotten trades a society both impossibly decorous by our standards yet also impossibly crude or vulgar by our lights. Recounted are such obscure events as the Earthquake of London notorious executions spectacular masques etc. Phillips brings an academic rigor to his subject yet never fails to entertain or make the lively canvas as vivid as a Fielding or Richardson novel to which this history should be an indispensable supplement. This copy would be fine on all points but for some light fox marks on the rear side foreedge which is why I describe it as near fine. DJ is fine and now protected with mylar. London: Thomas Harper 1631. Hardcover. Good. First edition. 4to. xvi 871 14 index pp extra engraved title page by Thomas Cecil eighteen woodcut illustrations six full-page. Foliation can be supplied upon request. Text is printed within a ruled frame with headpieces tailpieces and floriated initials. Contemporary full polished calf with hand-tooled decorative borders in blind to both boards six raised bands red morocco label with gilt lettering on backstrip edges speckled red. A good copy internally bright and crisp with light scattered foxing lacks the portrait of John Weever but has the extra engraved title-page and original index the original title-page appears to have been carefully cut along the margins and mounted on what was formerly the ffep the engraved title-page is similarly mounted on a blank leaf from the book that has been detached and slipped in covers are rubbed and scuffed joints are shaken and split though still attached .Notwithstanding these defects the contents are clean intact and very good. In addition to being a discourse on its subject this work is a compilation with commentary on epitaphs arms and inscriptions on tombs monuments church windows et al. The work focuses on the dioceses of Canterbury London Norwich and Rochester. Lowndes and DNB both citing Wharton's Anglia Sacra note that John Weever 1576-1632-poet anthologist and antiquary-made extensive errors in the interpretation of numbers and in transcription. However both note the work's great utility to historians and biographers. Writing in 1899 Sidney Lee who wrote the Weever entry in DNB points out that " .almost all sepulchral inscriptions in Weever are now obliterated" and that "despite its defects Weever's book is invaluable." This copy conforms to the collation and pagination in ESTC S118104 and the Melvyl/UCR record. Recorded copies are often defective lacking either preliminary blanks engraved title-page the frontis portrait or the index. STC 2nd 25223. Lowndes p. 2867-68. NCBEL 1:1158; NUC 653 p. 270. PENNSYLVANIA COAL MINING LABOR Culin Stewart
A Trooper's Narrative of Service in the Anthracite Coal Strike 1902
Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs 1902. First Edition. 7.5 x 5 in. 97 pp with three illustrations from photographs in original pictorial cloth. Light scuffing to corners and spine ends pale stain to frontis not affecting illustration previous owners' names on front endpapers. Very good. In 1902 the United States depended on anthracite or "hard coal" for domestic heating. Anthracite coal miners in Pennsylvania went on strike on May 12 demanding higher wages a shorter workday and recognition of their union the United Mine Workers of America. As the strike dragged on over several months public anxiety about fuel shortages led President Roosevelt to take the unprecedented action of stepping in to bring about a resolution. On October 3 1902 he met with presidents of the mine-owning railroads and union leaders. The owners refused to enter into negotiations with the union and the conference disbanded without resolving the crisis. Roosevelt then formed a commission to investigate the strike. Secretary of War Elihu Root and banker J. P. Morgan convinced railroad leaders to abide by the findings of the presidentially appointed commission. The union also accepted the commission and on October 20 voted to end the strike. In March 1903 the anthracite-coal commission recommended increasing miners' pay by ten percent one half of their demand and reducing the working day from ten to nine hours. Stewart Culin was a private in the Second Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry which was sent in August 1902 to maintain peace and order in Carbon County where the strike was centered. He later became an important ethnographer and his considered narrative and analysis of the strike reflects the eye of a keen observer. George W. Jacobs hardcover books

DAKOTAS AGRICULTURE
Black Rust and Hot Winds are Licked. No more bankrupt farmers even if the Black Rust does come---
Minneapolis: Thompson Yards Inc 1916. Broadside 20.75 x 9.75 inches. Old folding creases a few short closed tears at margins; very good. Minneapolis-based company Thompson Yards tells farmers that diversification in agriculture is the road to wealth -- urging them to buy silos on credit on the grounds that they can't go wrong if they raise cattle while growing alfalfa and a variety of grain crops. In the 1880s and 1890s the Dakotas had been widely promoted by land agents as ideal for growing wheat and many had settled there convinced their fortunes would be made by the crop. But Dakota farmers had suffered greatly when their wheat crops were devastated by disease "black rust" or excessive heat. While this broadside may read as an advertiser's hype which it is it was not entirely wrong - in the first decades of the twentieth centuries Dakota farmers had success growing oats corn barley rye flax sugar beets sunflowers potatoes and other crops. With demand high from the Allies during the start of World War I such crops did briefly lead to wealth. But farmers also borrowed heavily as they rushed to expand and many could not repay their debts when demand declined after the war and drought conditions returned. Thompson Yards, Inc unknown books

OHIO ELECTRIC LIGHTING
Album of Original Photographs Showing the Installation of Street Lights in Hamilton Ohio 1931
Album containing eleven 7"x 9" professional linen-backed photographs showing the process and results of installing new street lights along a main commercial thoroughfare in Hamilton Ohio. Hamilton is the county seat of Butler County about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. In the early twentieth century "the town was a heavy manufacturing center for vaults and safes machine tools cans for vegetables paper paper making machinery locomotives frogs and switches for railroads steam engines diesel engines foundry products printing presses and automobile parts" wiki. The photos show wide streets lined with businesses which with the advent of increased automobile traffic were undoubtedly eager for the most modern and effective methods of illumination. A wonderful set of facing night views shows how much brighter the new lights are. An additional 16 snapshots photos are laid into the album most showing people posing with what appear to be temporary streetlights. Five were taken in front of the office of the Electric Railway Equipment Co. of Cincinnati which may have supplied some of the equipment used to install the new lights. unknown books

BOSTON A Citizen
An Appeal to the Good Sense of the Legislature and the Community in Favor of a New Bridge to South Boston
Boston: True and Greene 1825. First Edition. 22 pp complete with original wrappers but with the stitching perished so gatherings are loose. Pink staining to front wrapper edgewear otherwise very good. Scarce pamphlet criticizing monopolies in general and more specifically the factions who opposed a new toll-free bridge in Boston because it would be detrimental to the interests of those holding a charter and collecting tolls for the existing Charles River bridge. Moser's Daniel Webster bibliography attributes this eloquently written pamphlet to Massachusetts State Senator David Henshaw 1791-1852. We have not been able to confirm this but it seems reasonable given that he was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party in Boston belonged to a group of real estate investors who would benefit from population growth spurred by the proposed new bridge and "represented the growing group of Bostonians who were shut out from the traditionally privileged class" Haines and Sherwood Supreme Court in American Government and Politics p. 32. Daniel Webster was one of the attorney representing the interests of the Charles River Bridge Company which was incorporated in 1785. Ultimately in a landmark decision in favor of free enterprise Charles River Bridge v. Warren Bridge 1837 the Unites States Supreme Court ruled that the charter of the Charles River Bridge Company did not exclude the state of Massachusetts from chartering another bridge nearby. BOY EVANGELIST
Wonder of the Century A Rare Treat. Come One Come All and Hear The Baby Evangelist -- Boy Preacher. Eight Years Old
Small broadside and cabinet card photo of El-Joseph Robert Raycroft. Undated but ca. 1905. Broadside measures 5.75 x 12 inches and has some old creases and short tears. Cabinet card is in fine condition and credited to photographer Geo. F. Reil of Chicago. Both of El-Joseph's parents were preachers and his three younger siblings gave public Bible recitations but he was clearly the star of this Chicago-based family of traveling evangelists from Chicago. This broadside promotes him as "the greatest wonder of the religious world today" and claims he has "conducted over 300 meetings" unaided and "talked with more people about their personal salvation thatn any child his age ever known." He began preaching at age 3 1/2 and was still at it in his early twenties. Contemporary newspapers record him preaching in Methodist and Baptist churches leading multidenominational revivals visiting prisons and even converting a pair of Chicago thugs who planned to rob and possibly murder his father. unknown books

SALVATION ARMY
What Others Think of the Salvation Army Colony at Amity Prowers Count Colorado. Being a Few Letters from Neighbors Friends and Visitors
1904. 31 pp with illustrations from photographs in original wrappers. Spine covered with archival tape line in ink on the margin of one page otherwise clean and sound. In 1898 the Salvation Army undertook a project intended to relocate urban working poor people to rural areas and enable them to become productive farmers. The idea for the project came from Salvation Army founder William Booth who described the concept in his book In Darkest England and the Way Out 1890. General Booth's daughter Emma and son-in-law Fredrick St. George de Lautour Booth-Tucker took charge of the Salvation Army in the United States in 1896 and they took it upon themselves to put General Booth's plan into action. The plan was characterized by Frederick Booth-Tucker as an experiment in "domiculture" or the cultivation of families on family farms. The Booth-Tuckers appointed Col. Thomas Holland as the National Colonization Secretary and together they chose sites in California Colorado and Ohio for the colonies. Source: Schemp Fort Amity An Experiment in Domiculture 2011. The Amity colony was settled by thirty families from Chicago and Iowa each of whom received ten acres of land livestock and tools. By 1903 the colony had 450 residents. In 1904 when this collection of testimonials was produced--presumably as both a fundraising tool and a response to naysayers--the project still seemed like it might succeed. That it did not closing in 1909 was apparently not due to any failure in selecting worthy colonists but because the Salvation Army officials had purchased land that was so alkaline that sustainable farming was impossible. Three copies located in OCLC. unknown books

SIDESHOW
What We Know About Waino and Plutano The Wild Men of Borneo With Poems Dedicated to Them
New York: Damon & Peets. Waino and Plutano also called Plutanor were a pair of exceptionally strong dwarf brothers from Ohio named Hiram and Barney born c. 1825 and 1827. They were each 40 inches tall and weighed about 45 pounds yet they could perform feats of great strength such as lifting heavy weights and wrestling with audience members on stage. Discovered and subsequently promoted by a traveling showman in 1852 the brothers were renamed and given a sensational backstory in which they were wild savages captured in Borneo after a great struggle with armed sailors. They were exhibited at state fairs across the United States in the 1860s and they later toured with William C. Coup's circus. They joined P.T. Barnum's traveling exhibitions around 1880 and went on to earn more than $200000 over the next two decades. This scarce pitch book describes the isolated "negritos" of Borneo "yellowish in color and undersized" the wild "monkey antics" of the brothers when they first reached America their amazing strength and their travels and gradual domestication. Undated sideshow pitch book c. 1880. 3 x 4.5 inches 16 pp in original illustrated wrappers. One full-page illustration and 2 within the text. A few small chips/short tears; very good. INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE TAXATION Rockwell Reuben
Small Archive of Letters from a Federal Tax Assessor to a Subordinate 1870-71
The Internal Revenue Service was created in 1862 when an income tax was enacted to help fund the Civil War. The Revenue Act of 1870 allowed the income tax to expire but taxes on certain luxury goods remained in place and a small staff of men was charged with collecting them. Here Reuben Rockwell Tax Assessor for the 4th District based out of Colebrook Connecticut writes to George Pierpont a tax collector under his supervision based in Watertown. On August 15 1870 he requests a report on "the quantity of leaf tobacco also stems scraps clippings &c." purchased and sold by "all cigar manufacturers in this district between January 1 1869 and the present adding that in future this information should be provided monthly. In another letter Rockwell instructs Pierpont to provide forms for all distillers to record their "numbers and capacity" and wonders "why there should be so much difference in the distillers about running their stills. Some in Oct made 9 boilings in 24 hours while others with about the same sized stills made but 4. I suppose some make better brandy than others." On the question of tax exemption of "bequests made to institutions of literary educational or charitable character" Rockwell writes that a "bequest made by Isaac Skinner to the Congregational Society of Harwinton and the American Missionary Association might possibly be construed to be of that kind although I don't think a Congregational Society would be included and the Missionary Society may not be. I don't know its particular object. Please write me tomorrow your views." Together an interesting peek into the daily work of some of the first employees of the IRS. Seven signed manuscript letters on United States Internal Revenue letterhead each on is on a single sheet ranging in length from approximately 50 to 100 words. Old folding creases minor spotting; very good. The Internal Revenue Service was created in 1862 when an income tax was enacted to help fund the Civil War.
