Lyndon VT 1882. First Edition. Softcover. Good. 233 pp ads in original salmon pictorial wrappers with frontispiece of a burro and additional small illustrations in the text. Chips to corners of front wrapper and lower spine previous owner's signature on front wrapper; internally very good. A series of letters written by Chase while traveling and first published in the Vermont Union a newspaper he founded and edited from 1865 until his death in 1902. Here they appear in revised and corrected form published Chase says in the preface due to the "general demand for information respecting New Mexico." He describes various interesting places visited in Trinidad and Denver Colorado and Cimmaron Taos Pueblo Santa Fe Las Vegas and Silver City New Mexico and disusses cattle and sheep ranching railroads gambling halls vigilance committees and more. One letter describes a brief encounter with explorer Paul de Chaillu. In addition to the material on the far west there is a letter on Chicago one on Iowa and Missouri and three on Kansas. In June 1953 a tornado cut a path of destruction through several western and central Massachusetts communities including the city of Worcester. Several campus buildings were destroyed or severely damaged." This pamhplet features recipes for "Quick Pastry" "Everyday Cake" "Fudge" "Doughnuts" "Nutmeg Sauce" "Cream or White Sauce" and "Baking Powder Biscuits." Original publisher's blue-grey paper-covered boards backed in green paper tan spine labels printed in black. Binding worn and rubbed particularly extremities of Vol I with light sunning and soiling; heel of Vol. I backstrip partially perished; front hinge of Vol I starting; page blocks a bit toned; light foxing to endpapers. Texts clean and unmarked bindings still quite sound overall. Good. Two volume set. 459 1 pp; pp 3 - 480. Illustrated with a total of 7 b/w plates and maps multiple engraved portraits to some plates. Plates published by T. Rogerson. 8vo. 9" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>Text appears to be the same as that in Baines' History of the Wars of the French Revolution published by Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown the same year albeit with a slightly different title and with attribution to Baines. The Longman edition may have been preceded by an edition in parts advertised as "The Cheapest History of the Wars" in the Literary Gazette London: Henry Colburn 1817 and first published on March 1st by Simpkin and Marshall and Sherwood and Co. and sold by T. Rogerson. This edition bears the pronounced error of the "1792" on the title pg of Vol I being printed as "1793" on Vol. II's title page. The work Baines' first -- significant portions of which were later found to have been lifted verbatim from an earlier history by Alexander Stephens -- was wildly popular upon publication and would have likely been in high demand in any form; it was reissued as part of Baines' larger work on George III published in 1820. Good condition. xii 251 1 16 ads pp. B/w engravings. 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5" <br/><br/>A solidly good copy of this first edition from Napoleon's most famous friend at St. Helena. Abell was 13 years old when her father invited Napoleon to stay at "The Briars" while Longwood was being readied for him; she became one of his closest friends and admirers. "Even a look a tone of the voice a gesture in an unreserved moment will give an insight into the real disposition which years of a more formal intercourse would fail to convey; and this is particularly the case in the association of a person of mature age with very young people. There is generally a confiding candour and openness about them which invites confidence in return and which tempts a man of the world to throw off the iron mask of reserve and caution and to assume once more the simplicity of a little child.
