Wheeler William
Statistics of the Class of 1855 of Yale College Published by Order of the Class Cover Title: Class of Fifty-Five of Yale College. Secretary's Report
New Haven: Morehouse & Taylor Printers 1859. Wraps. Very good. 5-3/4 x 9" sewn printed wraps pp. 72 wraps foxed and lightly soiled spine with loss to the head and tail with lesser chipping along its length but the binding sound and text clean A most-thoroughgoing census of all 150 members of the class of 1855 including dropouts five months in the making as per the Editor's "Valedictory" statement. The preliminary pages give in copious detail descriptions of various meetings and reunions which have taken place in the years all four of them since graduation and then lists every member of the class along with "Where Are They Now" biographical tidbits that make my mother's Christmas letters look tame. These are followed by various cross-indices by place of birth date of birth "the aggregate age of the Class at graduation was 1978 years" time of entrance profession etc. Then are listed those who "left without graduating" in decreasing order of years of attainment poor William Ross Degarmo "Entered from Fort Miller N.J. Oct. 18 1851; left Dec. 24 1851 and has not since been heard from". A labor of love truly by one committed to the cause. Wheeler would not alas be much longer with us as was no doubt true of many of his classmates -- he was killed fighting for the Union side in 1864. His devotion lived on however: After the war his mother published a memorial volume entitled "Letters of William Wheeler of the Class of 1855 Y.C." Houghton 1875. Meeker Ezra
Story of the Lost Trail to Oregon SIGNED
Seattle: Self-published. Undated ca. 1915. 4-1/4 x 6" stapled printed and photo-illustrated wraps signed in pencil by the author on the upper wrap; pp. 30 2; worn the wraps loose from the pages with chips out at the staples and several closed tears internally clean. Fair to good overall. Contains excerpts from various publications about Meeker's trailblazing escapades issued between 1907 and the occasion of the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. In his own words the fellow once known as "the Hop King of the World" tells the tale of a man and his ox-cart as they travel the original Oregon Trail. Though we may mock as did many at the time Meeker did succeed in drawing national attention to the Trail and in its permanent commemoration with granite markers. Self-published paperback books

About 40 finely drawn & colored illus. 16 folding leaves. 8vo 264 x 180 mm. orig. wrappers new stitching. Japan: late Edo. This is an extremely finely executed album of illustrated natural history specimens collected from throughout Japan; the nearly 40 illustrations are very well drawn and painted many with mica or three-dimensional techniques used in traditional Japanese painting to make the drawings more realistic. These include: a special kind of ivy from Nikko with Chinese names and where found a "four-eyes" jellyfish from Shizuoka a seahorse from Wakayama a cowskin from China a "floating rock" from Izu a "crab rock" and camphor wood from Ehime fossils "pepper rock" from Yamagata copper three images showing the stages of refining the ore from Iwate seaweed from Niigata white bats from Ibaraki the tree producing white lacquer from Kagoshima leeches from Musashino almonds from Nagano etc. There is some repaired worming which occasionally touches images but we do not find it offensive.
