Whipple Joseph
Autograph Letter Signed Portsmouth July 10 1789 to John Langdon New York City
folio two pages of a four page bi-folium some splits along folds remains of sealing wax on integral address leaf docketed "Jo Whipples Letter." In very good clean and legible condition. Joseph Whipple collector of customs at Portsmouth brother of General William Whipple 1730 - 1785 revolutionary War General and Signer from New Hampshire writes to John Langdon 1741 - 1819 Senator and first President pro-tem of the Senate thanking Langdon for his help and influence in obtaining a post in the new government and comments upon the recent establishment of the Federal court and judicial system. Langdon a Portsmouth native was the right person to ask as he was also a friend of the President George Washington. "Dear Sir I have the Honour this moment to receive your favour of the 5th & am much obliged by your kind assurances of attention to my business and also for having seasonably lodged my name with the President - I should have wrote now to him agreeably to your intimation but am discouraged from the consideration of his having no personal knowledge of me and that it might on that account appear and interested application which might operate to my disadvantage - and I conceive also that your influence with the President on which I have rested my expectation is such as I need wish no other. - But if you conceive that it would be of use to hand my name with your recommendation to Mr. Vice President to Mr. Morris Mr. R H Lee Mr. Dalton your Colleagues or others as you may think proper I should consider myself further & greatly obliged - but I think your interest requires no aid - as it will of course be represented by you that I am in the office of Colltr. - To some of the names that I have mentioned I am known - others of them were formerly either officially connected or intimately acquainted with my Brother on which account I should have applyd to them for their influence - I imagine also that all appointments will be completed tin a few days if not by this. - You will hear that the Judiciary bill is not relishd this way I have not seen it but think that the plan of one Judge to the District Court would be an objectionable one to most people in the Northern states - and the joining the Prov of Maine to N. H. districts no less so to N. H. - However the Acts may be finishd I hope & trust they will terminate in a system that will insure Peace and a happy Government." John Langdon brother of Woodbury Langdon was a merchant Delegate and Senator from New Hampshire. He was active and prominent supporter of the revolutionary movement member of the Continental Congress 1775-76 participated in the Battle of Bennington and commanded a company at Saratoga and in Rhode Island. Member of the State senate 1784 President of New Hampshire 1785 1788; again a member of the Continental Congress 1787 delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention in 1787; member of the state ratifying convention elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4 1789 until March 3 1801. James George Wharton
The Story of Captain The Horse with the Human Brain
Pasadena CA: Radiant Life Press 1917. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo pp. 48 7 b/w plates in original stapled pictorial wrappers. Some chipping and tiny tears to wrappers;contents clean. James first saw Captain a performing horse owned by W.A. Sigsbee of Chicago at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Amazed by the horse's apparent ability to count add and subtract; play "Nearer My God to Thee" on the chimes; and perform a variety of tricks in response to verbal commands James resolved to learn more about the horse and his trainer. Here their story is told in full from Captain's point of view "There are some people who think I don't like to give performances. I don't know why except that I do get tired a little once in a while and sometimes my master wants me to be quiet and good when I feel frisky and frolicsome and want to kick up my heels. I always feel better the busier I am." and Sigsbee has his say as well. After conducting his own "scientific investigation" of Captain's abilities James concludes that there is no explicit trickery involved in their show but that the horse may pick up on cues of which the audience--and likely even the trainer--is unaware. This leads to his more general observation that there is still much to learn about animal intelligence. "There is too much assumption in human beings about most things animal instinct and human reason not excluded. What I wish to protest against with emphasis and vigor is the assumption that we know all there is to know about intelligence that we know the limits Nature herself has placed upon its development and that all efforts to foster further development are useless. I affirm that we do not know; that we have never as yet even tried to know; and that until men with loving devoted sympathetic singleness of heart and purpose seek to develop all there is in the mentality of all the lower animals dogs cats deer as well as horses shall we begin to have a real foundation for our assumptions upon the subject." Cieza de Leon Pedro 1520 1554
The Seventeen Years of Travels of Peter de Cieza through the Mighty Kingdom of Peru and the Large Provinces of Carthagena and Popayan in South America
viii24412 pages with engraved map folding plan and four engraved illustrations in text and index. Quarto 9 ¾" x 7½" bound in period calf with modern rebacking original gilt spine leather laid down and ruled gilt edges to cover. Translated by Joh Stevens. First English Edition.

This is a highly regarded chronicle of the conquest and colonization of Peru by Spaniards in the latter part of the 16th century and is lauded for its at the time objectivity. Cieza de Leon's Chronica was to appear in 4 sections this translation being the first part only all that was available of the history until the latter part of the 19th century.

Pedro Cieza de León was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is known primarily for his history and description of Peru Crónicas del Perú. He wrote this book in four parts but only the first was published during his lifetime; the remaining sections were not published until the 19th and 20th centuries. Cieza de León was born to a family of Jewish conversos1 around 1520 in Llerena a town in southeastern Extremadura less than 60 mi from Portugal. Although recently converted from Judaism to Catholicism the family enjoyed good social standing in the region because of their networks and business dealings. His father Lope de León was a shopkeeper in the town and his mother Leonor de Cazalla was a native of Llerena. There is scant documentary evidence of the young Cieza de León’s childhood and little is known of his early life before his voyage to the Americas. Given the fact that he left home at 13 it is unlikely that Cieza de León received more than a rudimentary education. In 1536 in Córdoba at 16 Cieza de León was greatly surprised to learn of the discovery of the land of the Incas and so decided to go to Seville to embark on his journey to South America to see for himself the artifacts of precious metals which had been brought to Spain from Cajamarca. In light of the prohibition of entry into the Spanish colonies for Jews and Jewish converts to Catholicism Alonso López and Luis de Torres attested for Cieza de León that he was not prohibited. Jewish converso Pedro López de Cazalla secretary of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro conqueror of the Incan Empire was also his first cousin. He returned to Seville Spain in 1551 and married a woman named Isabel López de Abreu. Here he published in 1553 the first part of the chronicles of Peru Primera Parte. He died the following year leaving the rest of his work unpublished. His Second Part of Chronicles of Peru describing the Incas was translated by Clements Markham and published in 1871 for the Hakluyt Society. In 1909 the fourth part of his chronicle focusing on the civil wars among the Spanish conquerors was published under the title Third Book of the Peruvian Civil Wars. The third part of Cieza de León's Crónicas del Perú which examined the discovery and conquest of Peru by the Spaniards was considered by historians to be lost. The document eventually turned up in a Vatican library and historian Francesca Cantù published a Spanish version of the text in 1979. Though his works are historical and narrate the events of the Spanish conquest of Peru and the civil wars among the Spaniards much of their importance lies in his detailed descriptions of geography ethnography flora and fauna. He was the first European to describe some native Peruvian animal species and vegetables.

Condition:

Expertly rebacked some light rubbing to extremities foxing old book plate on front pastedown else very good. unknown hardcover books

Crasset Jean 1618 1692
Histoire de l'Église du Japon
2 volumes. 2865911 pages with 4 plates and index; 106786 pages with 4 plates one folding and index. Quarto 10" x 8" bound in half leather with raised spine bands in gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. Streit-Dindinger VI 1418. Second edition of a 1689 history of missions to Japan prefaced with a general account of the country.

Jean Crasset was an ascetical writer born at Dieppe France 3 January 1618 and died at Paris 4 January 1692. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1638 became professor of humanities and philosophy was director for twenty-three years of a famous sodality of men connected with the professed house of the Jesuits in Paris and was also a successful preacher. Crasset is the author of many ascetical works among which are:Methode d'oraison; Considérationes chrétiennes pour tous les jours de l'année; La chrétienne in soli tude; Dissertation sur les oracles des Sibylles which was vigorously attacked; Entretiens pour la jeunesse. He also published in 1689 a Historie de l'église du japon which has been translated into several languages but which is considered inferior to that of Charlevoix. Crasset's history was scarcely original for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative from 1624 to 1658. The objection is made that the work lacks precision is heavy and is crowded with details. The author attributed the origin of the persecution of 1597 to the imprudence of the friars in making their religious ceremonies public. There is a posthumous work of his entitled La foy victorieuse de l'infidélite et du libertinage. On 9 September 1656 the Bishop of Orléans issued an interdict against him for having in one of his sermons charged several ecclesiastics with sustaining the propositions condemned by the Bull of Innocent X Cum occasione 31 May 1653. The interdict was removed in the following February.

Condition:

Nicely rebound in half leather. M K Beddie: 39 First edition of the bound edition.

Captain James Cook RN was a British explorer navigator and cartographer ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment both in his personal career and in the direction of British overseas exploration and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. Cook charted many areas and recorded several islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. His achievements can be attributed to a combination of seamanship superior surveying and cartographic skills courage in exploring dangerous locations to confirm the facts for example dipping into the Antarctic Circle repeatedly and exploring around the Great Barrier Reef an ability to lead men in adverse conditions and boldness both with regard to the extent of his explorations and his willingness to exceed the instructions given to him by the Admiralty. Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779.

Condition:

Lacks volume II and VI. Keate George 1729 1797
An Account of the Pelew Islands Situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson and Some of His Officers Who in August 1783 Were There Shipwrecked in the Antelope a Packet Belonging
xxx408 pages with frontispiece one additional plate and vocabulary of the Pelew language. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" Original 3/4 leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering and red label to spine. Hill 907 & 816 Fourth edition.

In 1783 the East India Company packet the Antelope out of Macao was shipwrecked on the Pelew islands now Pelau or Belau in the western Carolines in Micronesia. All the crew were saved and were the first Europeans to make contact with these islanders. They were lucky in that there was a Malay there shipwrecked the year before who was able to act as interpreter. Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants and participated in expeditions against their enemies. They were able to recover a great deal from the wreck and to build a new vessel with which they sailed to Macau after a stay of just over three months. They took with them Lee Boo who became a figure of fashionable interest in London. Using extensive interviews with Captain Wilson and other participants including Lee Boo George Keate wrote "An Account of the Pelew Islands". This work is distinctive in its account of the encounter between two cultures for its anthropologically-minded account of Palauan culture and society and as one of the fullest 18th-century accounts of a Pacific society.

Condition:

Large folding map in need of repair but complete.
