Il libro raccoglie le testimonianze dei reduci piombinesi che l'8 settembre del 1943 vennero catturati e deportati nei campi di concentramento tedeschi, dove rimasero per tutto il periodo della Resistenza fino alla Liberazione. Concepito per accogliere la trascrizione di un nucleo di video-interviste rilasciate dai soci dell'ANAI (Associazione Nazionale Ex Internati), il volume offre un'accurata traccia storica del periodo, fornisce notizie biografiche dei testimoni, ma si arricchisce anche d'immagini e altri documenti quali due diari, interamente trascritti. Ciò allo scopo di conservare il ricordo di chi ha vissuto il dramma bellico e a trasmetterlo con esattezza alle nuove generazioni. Ogni testimonianza affronta in modo originale i temi drammatici della guerra: la fame, il cameratismo e la solidarietà tra compagni e concittadini, la presenza costante della morte, la paura e la nostalgia di casa e della famiglia. In un quadro di atteggiamenti che spaziano dalla disobbedienza alla vera e propria resistenza, trova collocazione la scelta di centinaia di migliaia di soldati italiani internati nei lager, dopo l'8 settembre, senza neppure la qualifica di prigionieri di guerra, in quanto formalmente considerati dipendenti dal regime fascista repubblicano, alleato alla Germania nazista. Ricostruendo le loro vicende il volume rende un doveroso omaggio a una generazione che ha sacrificato la propria esistenza in nome della libertà.
