Clandestina. Una giovane donna sopravvissuta a Berlino (1940-1945)
ril. Marie Jalowicz vive a Berlino, ha 19 anni, è ebrea e quando nel 1941 muore suo padre, resta completamente sola. Con la guerra, la vita degli ebrei in Germania è diventata ancora pili difficile. Marie però non è disposta ad accettare passivamente l'arrivo della Gestapo come, quasi fossero incantati, fanno molti membri di quella comunità ebraica da cui decide di prendere, almeno psicologicamente, le distanze. E si pone un obiettivo: sopravvivere. Perché tutti ormai sanno dove conducono quei treni, sanno che alla fine di quei viaggi c'è solo la morte. Si sottrae quindi al lavoro forzato presso la Siemens, si stacca la stella gialla e, il 22 giugno 1942, entra in clandestinità. Per sopravvivere ha però bisogno, oltre che di documenti falsi, di nascondigli sicuri e di una buona dose di sangue freddo, anche di persone disposte ad aiutarla. Alcune, anche nazisti incalliti, lo faranno perché non sanno che è ebrea ed è difficile dire di no a una ventenne, altri perché mossi da idealismo politico, altri ancora per semplice senso di solidarietà umana. Per raggiungere la Palestina cercherà di sposare un giovane bulgaro, per avere un passaporto cinese, un aitante cinese. Troverà rifugio nella comunità artistica della città, convivrà con un giovane operaio olandese in casa di un'anziana donna. E mentre, quasi senza cibo, cerca di salvare se stessa, vede Berlino crollare sotto i bombardamenti alleati e infine entrare in città i soldati dell'Armata Rossa.

'The following narrative of local history has been prompted by the recent discovery at Houghton-Green near Warrington of a number of original transcripts so closely connected with the military transactions in this part of our county during the Civil War between Charles the First and his Parliament as to come peculiarly under the province of this Society for notice.'
