Pulaski Cowper 1832-1901 a native of Murfreesboro graduated from U.N.C. read law and practiced with Thomas Bragg and served as Bragg's private secretary when he was elected governor in 1855 returning to that position when Clark assumed the post in 1861. Andrew A. Hill a native of Iredell County and a student as the war began served as commander of Co. G 7th N.C. leading it through battles in 1862 and 1863 until wounded twice during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg never fully recovering and being discharged on permanent disability in early 1865. L'auteur met en lumière ce qui a rendu l'Europe, apparemment prospère et bien portante en 1914, aussi vulnérable à l'impact de l'assassinat de l'archiduc François-Ferdinand. — Le 28 juin 1914, dans Sarajevo écrasée de soleil, un certain Gavrilo Princip se réfugie à l'ombre d'un auvent pour guetter le cortège officiel de l'archiduc François-Ferdinand... Cinq semaines plus tard, le monde plonge dans une guerre qui entraînera la chute de trois empires, emportera des millions d'hommes et détruira une civilisation. Pourquoi l'Europe, apparemment prospère et rationnelle, était-elle devenue si vulnérable à l'impact d'un unique attentat perpétré à sa périphérie ? Quels formidables jeux d'alliances géopolitiques toujours fluctuantes et d'intérêts nationaux contradictoires se mêlaient-ils ? Quelles craintes ancestrales, quelles mythologies nationales animaient les opinions publiques et influencèrent les décisions des diplomates ? C'est ce que raconte cette fresque magistrale. Multipliant les points de vue et faisant dialoguer avec brio études classiques et sources inédites (en anglais, allemand, français, bulgare, serbe et russe), Christopher Clark replace les Balkans au coeur de la crise la plus complexe de l'histoire moderne et en décrit minutieusement les rouages. Plus clairement que jamais, il montre que rien n'était écrit d'avance : l'Europe portait en elle les germes d'autres avenirs, sans doute moins terribles. Mais de crise en crise, les personnages qui la gouvernaient, hantés par leurs songes et aveugles à la réalité des horreurs qu'ils allaient déchaîner, marchèrent vers le danger comme des somnambules. — "Il faut beaucoup d’audace, et plus encore de savoir, pour proposer un nouveau livre consacré aux causes de la Grande Guerre. Dans "Les Somnambules", l’historien australien Christopher Clark affronte ce défi : enfermer, en quelques centaines de pages, les milliers d’interactions, d’échanges diplomatiques et de subtils enchaînements qui ont marqué les semaines décisives de l’été 1914, mais aussi des décennies précédentes. Le défi est redoublé par l’épaisseur des strates d’histoire écrites sur la question, depuis les lendemains mêmes du conflit, où des chercheurs comme Pierre Renouvin et Luigi Albertini, bien que tributaires d’une documentation lacunaire, avançaient des pistes susceptibles d’éclairer avec rigueur un débat qui empoisonnait les relations internationales, l’Allemagne ayant été rendue « responsable » de la guerre par l’article 231 du traité de Versailles, en 1919. Par la suite, on sait quelles grandes hypothèses explicatives se sont imposées : celle d’une guerre due aux rivalités impérialistes et aux contradictions au sein du système capitaliste ; celle d’un conflit arrivé comme par accident, sans responsables ni coupables autres que les plans de mobilisation ; celle, enfin, d’une politique extérieure allemande ayant hâté la guerre parce qu’en « quête de puissance mondiale », pour reprendre le titre choisi par l’historien allemand Fritz Fischer dans son retentissant ouvrage paru en 1961 (Les Buts de guerre de l’Allemagne impériale, Trévise, 1970). Depuis, à la lumière de nouveaux documents et dans des monographies hélas non traduites, les interprétations se sont encore affinées. Elles mettent l’accent sur le rôle du grand chef d’état-major allemand von Moltke, analysé par l’historienne britannique Annika Mombauer, du général autrichien Conrad von Hötzendorf, « architecte de l’apocalypse » pour son biographe Lawrence Sondhaus, ou, par retour de balancier, du président français Poincaré, que pointe la recherche récente de l’historien allemand Stefan Schmidt. C’est encore une autre piste qu’entend suivre Christopher Clark. Il replace l’attentat de Sarajevo (28 juin 1914), et le contexte balkanique, au centre de la scène. Avec un indéniable talent narratif, et une stupéfiante maîtrise des sources primaires (il a exploré des archives non seulement à Paris, Londres, Vienne, Berlin et Moscou, mais aussi à Belgrade et La Haye), il redonne leur importance à des épisodes souvent négligés, qui déstabilisent l’ordre international d’avant-guerre (l’invasion de la Cyrénaïque ottomane par l’Italie en 1911, par exemple), et invite surtout à bien peser le rôle belligène d’une Serbie marquée par le fanatisme nationaliste et la culture de l’assassinat politique. Par extension, cela conduit à redonner un rôle de premier plan à la Russie et à la France, ici fautives de l’avoir soutenue et donc d’avoir placé « un détonateur géopolitique le long de la frontière austro-serbe » – un raisonnement qui minimise, souvent à l’excès, la responsabilité de l’Allemagne et de l’Autriche-Hongrie dans la généralisation de la crise, au lendemain de Sarajevo. Au total, cette recherche orientée, mais exemplaire dans son genre, débouche sur une métaphore : celle des « somnambules », des hommes d’Etat prisonniers de perceptions faussées de leurs adversaires, acteurs d’une « tragédie » débouchant sur un « cataclysme ». Pour expliquer 1914, on peut préférer une conceptualisation plus ferme, mais on ne trouvera pas de meilleur récit." ‎Raleigh NC 1862. Folio. One page countersigned by Pulaski Cowper the governor's private secretary. Henry Clark 1808-1874 a native of Tarboro gradated from U.N.C. in 1826 and read law before taking over the management of his father's plantation and other business affairs in the early 1830s entering politics with election to the state senate in 1850 rising to the speakership and taking over as governor when John Ellis died in 1861 preparing the state for war during his year in office Zebulon Vance became governor in September 1862. Pulaski Cowper 1832-1901 a native of Murfreesboro graduated from U.N.C. read law and practiced with Thomas Bragg and served as Bragg's private secretary when he was elected governor in 1855 returning to that position when Clark assumed the post in 1861. Andrew A. Hill a native of Iredell County and a student as the war began served as commander of Co. G 7th N.C. leading it through battles in 1862 and 1863 until wounded twice during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg never fully recovering and being discharged on permanent disability in early 1865.
