(Masonry) (Civil War) Jewell, Jacob, author
Heroic Deeds of Noble Master Masons During the Civil War From 1861 to 1865 in the U.S.A.
Pueblo CO: The Franklin Press. 1916. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. This volume written by Jewella Civil War soldier had started the process of becoming a Mason but was interrupted two weeks later by joining the Union army in 1862. After serving in the winter of 1865/66 he became Master Mason. The book contains the stories of soldiers who when captured by the Confederates or the Federal Army once they were known to be a Mason were treated as brothers and well cared for. Cleary Jewell had solicited these stories as they are mostly signed by the former soldier/Mason who experienced these considerations. The book also contains a brief autobiography of Jewell as well as some thoughts on Masonry war and related subjects. The Masonry scholar Michael A Halleran wrote in the journal "Heredom" suggesting the Masonry affiliation aided prisoners on both sides of the conflict. Jewell's book is considered one of the earliest works addressing the Freemasonry's role in the Civil War though Halleran does criticize it for being "anecdotal." See volume 15 2007 of "Heredom." The book is near fine with a few small spots on the front board. Extremely scarce.; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 127 pp . The Franklin Press hardcover

(Mexican American War) Farnum, John Egbert
Autograph Document Signed "J. Egbert Farnum late of the U.S.A." Being a hand-written poem relating an incident of the Mexican American War
New York City 1854. 3 pp. pen and ink on bifolium. 8vo. Old folds very minor stain to edge of bottom right corner on first page not affecting text else fine. 3 pp. pen and ink on bifolium. 8vo. Romantic in a style befitting the era Farnum offers a graphic account of a a heart-wrenching scene from battle which he describes as "carelessly written but respectfully dedicated to Maria L. Green." Reading in part:<br /> <br /> ."Where hot and fiercest raged the fight<br /> Where lead came down like rain ~<br /> Where bursting bombshells feeble light<br /> Discovered heaps of slain ~<br /> I saw a little laughing sprite<br /> A joyous little dear<br /> Leading a pet lamb through the fight<br /> Without one though of fear. ~"<br /> <br /> Soldier express rider mercenary adventurer and notoriously hard drinking brawler John Egbert Farnum's 1824-1870 military career began in the Mexican American War where he served as a sgt. major in the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He would go on to see action in the Crimean War and the jungles of Cuba and Nicaragua before enlisting as a major in the Union Army in 1861. Farnum fought gallantly in some of the bloodiest engagements of the American Civil War including Fredericksburg Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before his wounds forced him to retire from active service Farnum was shot 19 times and suffered two saber wounds. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general for his meritorious service. <br /> Despite his incredible war record Farnum is more often remembered for his involvement in the infamous voyage of the schooner Wanderer. Built as a luxury racing yacht the Wanderer was purchased by William Corrie in 1858 with the assistance of southern "fire eater" Charles A.L. Lamar. Corrie had the schooner refitted as a slave ship and along with Farnum who later claimed ignorance of the scheme and the ship's crew sailed to Africa and loaded 407 slaves aboard. They arrived off Jeckyll Island Georgia in November and were arrested for violating the 1807 Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves. Farnum was charged with piracy. He escaped jail but was recaptured and after a lengthy and sensational trial in which the President of the United States James Buchanan came to his defense he was acquitted of all charges. unknown

Heritage had just enlisted in the United States Army as part of the Louisville Light Artillery and was leaving via New Orleans to fight in the Mexican-American War. He wrote home to his wife and daughter. My Dear Wife/ It is with a heart somewhat full that I address you at this time but it is not because I have volunteerd sic in the service of my Country and bound for the seat of war but from the fact that money has not been furnished me according to promise that I might leave you in a better situation Capt E.B. Howe has given me 2 Dols that I send you by Mr Johnson as I shall not need it When at Orleans and Mustered under Genl Gaines I trust I shall do at every opportunity I should have called and seen you again but concluded it was best not I sincerely hope that you will not worry yourself but keep good Heart trusting that we will meet again at least one year but probably sooner for it certainly will not take 30.000 men long to make Mexico sue for peace on any terms we are now hauling out into the stream. Now my Dear Martha I sincerely trust that you will be a comfort to your mother by being dutiful and obedient to her during my absence and rest assured that I shall never disgrace the stars and stripes under which I rally in thought word or action believing that our cause is just and that we shall be protected by the God of Battles. Now my pet you must love Mamma by a good girl and kiss her very often for your papa and when you go to school try to learn so fast that you will be able to read my letters. P.S please file all the letters you receive during my absence. Your affectionate Husband Tho.s R. Heritage Sergant Johnson sends his best respects. Rare Nazi Concentration Camp Artifact: Metal Slave Laborer Registration Card found on location in the soil of a former Mittelbau-Dora satellite camp. Embossed with Inmate Personal Details.
Print. . ~ ~ NOTE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ . Metal registration card measuring ca. 6x13 cm. ~ An extremely rare archaeological find of a Nazi Period artifact. Found on location at one of Mittelbau-Dora satellite camps. This metal Nazi Concentration Camp Slave Laborer Registration Card is hardly ever seen outside a display at a museum. These cards by definition never left the administration of the concentration camp in which they were kept and after liberation moved to the custody of the memorials and the museums. In contrast the "Arbeitsbuch" the personal identification document of the slave laborer was carried by inmates into their liberation and consequently is to be found in abundance on the market even generations later. The metal card was found on location in the soil of the former Mittelbau-Dora satellite camp. It is embossed with full details of a particular inmate. A special machine was needed for producing this. The writing remains almost perfectly legible. The general condition is good for an excavated item the corrosion patina dust and soil remained untouched and bear witness to the period. Reaching far beyond the value of a single collectible of Nazi memorabilia this artifact is an archeological piece of history and should be treasured as such. The last photo shows a display of such cards at the Buchenwald Memorial Museum from Librarium's collection. -- <br/> <br/> unknown
