A remarkable substantial set of WWI Divisional General Orders covering the Division for the time Major General John O'Ryan assumed command on July 25 1917 to General Order 140 of August 25 1918. This may have belonged to Major later Colonel John Tabor Loree who after the war was a senior official at the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. From Wikiepedia: "The 27th Infantry Division was a unit of the Army National Guard in World War I and World War II. The division traces its history from the New York Division formed originally in 1908. The 6th Division designation was changed to the 27th Division in July 1917. When the New York Division was organized in 1908 the New York National Guard became the second state after Pennsylvania to structure its National Guard at such a high tactical level in peacetime. The New York Division was called to active duty during the Mexican border crisis of 1916. While on federal duty it was redesignated as the 6th Division in June 1916. It was released from active duty in December 1916 only to be recalled for World War I service in July 1917. The 6th Division was reorganized and redesignated as the 27th Division on 1 October 1917.Called into federal service on July 15 1917 the Twenty-Seventh Division hastily recruited to increase its numbers and late in August was concentrated at Camp Wadsworth near Spartanburg SC for intensive training. In the spring of 1918 the division began its movement toward embarkation camps. The division s advance detachment left Hoboken on May 2 and arrived at Brest France May 10 1918. Until July 24 the division was in the final stages of training under British mentors in Picardy and Flanders. On July 25 the 27th Division occupied the Dickebusch Lake and Scherpenberg sectors in Flanders. The great Somme "push " lasting from September 24 to October 1 saw the 27th engaged in severe fighting along the Saint Quentin Canal Tunnel. This manual serves as a reference to basic photographic principles and to the technique of military photography. It includes elementary photography chemistry sensitized materials optics filters photographic sensitometry ground camera photography negative making printing copying lantern slides color photography and laboratory operations. Operation and methods incident to the making of aerial photographs and aerial photographic products and their application to various purposes are described in TM 1-220. This is the standard of practice in place when the United States entered into World War II. The Air Corps was charged with the responsibility for performing all photographic and cinematographic work from aircraft. At stations where Air Corps troops predominated the Air Corps was responsible for performing the essential ground camera photography that was normally done for the War Department by the Signal Corps. A specially trained technician known as a photo officer was a member of the special staff of the commander of each unit having photographic responsibilities. The photo officer acts as an adviser to the commander on all technical and tactical applications of photography. War photography involves photographing armed conflict and its effects on people and places. Photographers who participate in this genre may find themselves placed in harm's way and are sometimes killed trying to get their pictures out of the war arena. The first official attempts at war photography were made by the British government at the start of the Crimean War. In March 1854 Gilbert Elliott was commissioned to photograph views of the Russian fortifications along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Roger Fenton was the first official war photographer and the first to attempt a systematic coverage of war for the benefit of the public. Like all soldiers Army photographers get trained on basic combat skills and learn how to operate weapons expertly engage in hand-to-hand combat and administer basic first-aid. Charles White Berry April 11 1871 - April 30 1941 was an American physician soldier and New York City Comptroller. Berry graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1896. He then began practicing medicine in Brooklyn devoting much of his time to childhood diseases. He was heavily involved in public health working for the New York City Department of Health and the New York State Department of Health as a diagnostician and epidemiologist. In 1917 he received a degree in doctor of public health from New York University. In 1911 when trouble was brewing with Mexico he sought and obtained a commission as first lieutenant in the 14th Infantry. A year later he was commissioned a captain. While serving he was commended by Major General Leonard Wood for having the most efficient company in the National Guard. From 1913 to 1914 he was an Aide to governor Martin H. Glynn. Shortly afterwards he was mustered in to serve with the 14th Infantry during the Mexican Border War. He received an honorable discharge in 1916. When America was preparing to enter World War I Berry again enlisted as a private in the 14th Infantry. He was commissioned a major of infantry transferred to the 106th Infantry 27th Division and set sail for France in May 1918. He commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 106th stationed in the Ypres sector in Belgium. He was then promoted to lieutenant-colonel and transferred to the 105th Infantry. He led the regiment at Dickebusch Lake and the Battle of Vierstraat Ridge. He was second in command of the regiment in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line and the subsequent advance to Canal De La Sambre. After the Armistice was signed he returned to the United States in November 1918. For his military service he was awarded the Croix de guerre with Palms the Conspicuous Service Cross and was cited for gallantry in action. In January 1919 New York governor Al Smith commissioned Berry Brigadier General and appointed him Adjutant General of New York. He served until 1920. In 1923 Smith again appointed Berry Adjutant General of New York. In May 1923 Smith appointed him Major-General Commander of the New York National Guard to replace General John F. O'Ryan.
