‎(GENERAL ORDERS -- CIVIL WAR)‎

‎General Order No. 1‎

‎Bolivar TN: Head-Quarters Com'dr of the Post 1862 November 3. Handbill. Small 8vo 5" X 7 3/4". Very good. Clean and nice though bottom and left margins heavily chipped not affecting text. Mason Brayman announces his taking command of the Post of Bolivar per Major General J.B. McPherson's order and lists the several regiments that will report to this headquarters. Signed in type at the conclusion by M. Brayman as "Brig Gen'l Commanding Post." Brayman 1813-95 was a New York attorney who migrated to Michigan then Illinois -- where in 1848 when Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress and moved to Washington he rented the Lincoln's home. He served with the 29th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and rose to major general during a short but heroic career after the war editing the "Illinois State Journal" and n 1876 appointed Governor of the Idaho Territory. Given the crude typesetting quite possibly printed on a field press. Very scarce. unknown‎

‎Schumann Guerra, Ana Elisa‎

‎LAS RAÃCES DE LA DEVOCIÓN‎

‎Guatemala: SET Independently Published 2023. First edition. Paperback. New. 121p. photos bibl. wrps. "The deepest devotions in the hearts of the capital's inhabitants have their roots in the Colonial Era and in the ancestral beliefs of the ancient Mayans. From the 16th century the Mayan Spanish and African groups that inhabited the city of Santiago de Guatemala were united by the Catholic religion and as the interbreeding increased the practices of popular piety also became more complex. Our ancestors showed their devotion in different ways and their faith allowed them to overcome problems such as natural disasters epidemics and relocations of the city. Baroque art was oriented towards evangelization so we have a rich architectural pictorial and sculptural heritage. In this work we can also appreciate the evolution of goldsmithing jewelry and cabinetmaking. From the years after the transfer of the capital to the Ermita Valley we have very detailed descriptions of the religious celebrations both in New Guatemala and the Assumption and in Antigua Guatemala which allows us to understand the roots of our devotion. ‎Clonmult Ambush of Irish Republican Army members by British forces, 20 February 1921, during the Irish War of Independence; Nann‎

‎Typed copy of a letter purportedly by an Irishwoman addressed to a lady resident in England Nannie Dryhurst or her daughter Sylvia Lynd describing the 'butchery' inflicted on her son killed by the British during or after the Clonmult Ambush.‎

‎3 March 1921. 2pp. 4to. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. One minor manuscript emendation see below. Dated at the head 'March 3rd. 1921' and addressed to 'Madam'. Part of the letter was published - lacking the first sentence and all of the second page and with the name 'Clonmult' omitted - in the second volume of the 'News Letter of the Friends of Irish Freedom National Bureau of Information Washington' where it was preceded by: 'The following is the story of an Irish mother who relates in a letter received by a lady resident in England how she was called to a military barracks in Ireland to identify her dead son:' The letter begins: 'Madam I beg to acknowledge with grateful thanks the sum of £1. I am one of the mothers of the boys who was killed at Clonmult on February 20th. sic He amended in manuscript from 'he' was only 19 years old and as fine a young man as you would wish to see and I his mother that saw him only three weeks previous to his death when I went up to Cork barracks to identify him I really at first could only recognise his hair - Oh! my goodness what a butchery they gave those 12 young men. To my dying day I wont sic forget the sight that met my eyes when that dead house door was opened to see all those fine young men thrown like dogs on the floor labeled "on H.M.S." and each one having a number and their poor feet tied with ropes. My poor boy was just inside the door his poor face all broke up his eyes were broke in his head his mouth broke and twisted and all his teeth in his mouth one arm completely cut off and not one inch of his poor body but bayonet wounds you could easily see they were bayonet wounds as ll his coat and pants were cut through and one great big hole just up at his neck like as if they drove the bayonet to the butt and turned it round'. Here the published extract ends but the author goes on to describe how her husband has been '12 months idle the end of this month he is gone to work yesterday thank God' and that her '4 little children' have been 'often hungry and would be worse only I went out working myself to try and keep the home over us and anywhere that poor boy tried to get employment the police prevented him also his father so thank God he is at rest'. She asserts that she 'could write a book on the way I and my family are persecuted by police and military during the past 18 months torn out of bed at all hours of the night my house and place all upset.' From the Dryhurst/Lynd papers. 3 March 1921. unknown‎

My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M. on Sunday when if you can manage to call once more I shall be delighted to see you & revive our mutual recollections of old days.' According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.' ‎Edward Mason Wrench (1833-1912) of the 34th Regiment of Foot [The Crimean War; Siege of Sebastopol; Crimea]:‎

‎Edward Mason Wrench Manuscript describing events in 1855-6 during his service in the Crimean War with the 34th Regiment of Foot. With duplicated hectograph letter by him and handbill advertisement for talk by him both on the Siege of Sebastopol‎

‎The account of 'Events in 1855 and 1856' dated by Wrench from Park Lodge Baslow Derbyshire 1902. The duplicated letter dated 12 December 1880. The printed advertisement for talk at the School Baslow and dated 14 January 1881. Wrench was the son of a clergyman and well connected being presented to the Prince of Wales and staying at Chatsworth in his old age. His obituary in the British Medical Journal 27 April 1812 describes how he went out to the Crimea in 1854. 'He had been gazetted Assistant Surgeon to the 34th Regiment in November and joined it on its arrival in the Crimea. He served during the terrible winter of that year and was present at the capture of the quarries the successful assault on the Redan of June 18th and the final capture of Sebastopol on September 8th 1855. He was mentioned in despatches and received the Crimean medal and clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.' Wrench's own account of his experiences in the Crimea Item One below – entirely unpublished – is a personal one vividly-written and full of detail. It does not appear to be present in the collection of his family papers at Nottingham University Library. ONE: Manuscript consisting of 'Events in 1855' 4pp and '1856 12pp making a total of 16pp. 8vo on twelve leaves attached with a stud. In good condition on aged and dogeared paper. The first page of the 1855 manuscript is headed '12 sic Pages in this Year' but comprises four numbered pages. The beginning of account sets the scene and gives an indication of the level of detail: 'The 1st Janry found me doing duty with the 28th Foot or Slashers in the 3rd. Divt of the army before Sebastopol having landed at Balaclava from the Ship "Queen of the South" on the 20th. Nov. 1854. On the 6th July I was ordered to do duty with the 50th. Foot but as I did not wish to move the weather being very bad and my tent being as comfortable or rather as little uncomfortable as it could be made except to join my own Regt. the 34th. to which I had been gazetted on the 1st. of December 1854. I applied to be sent to it and was ordered to join which I did on 9th of Janry.' The account is made up from diary entries and is none the less vivid and interesting for that: 'On the following morning a wounded Russian named Alexo was brought into our Hospital and we amputated his leg he did really well and was eventually exchanged at Odessa. Poor Jordan's death threw a great damp on the Regiment as he was the first Officer we had had killed. On the 9th. of April being Easter Monday the 2nd. Bombardment took place. It was a fearfully wet windy day so that no one was able to go out to see what damage was done. On the 10th. I was on trenches and the noise was terrific but nothing to what I have since heard. I had a very narrow escape from a round shot which hopped over the parapet close to where I was.' In June 'after 68 hours bombardment an assault was made on the Quarries by ourselves . I did not go down till about 8 with Robinson Scott & Peel and 100 men. We were marching about the Trenches half the night and were finally sent to the middle ravine just below Mamelon. The scene there was most horrible the ground being strewn with dead & wounded. English French & Russians. One poor Russian boy was dragged up by two Zouaves but fainted just opposite to where we were lying. I got a light and found he was shot through the belly and that nothing could be done for him. I gave him some water and he lie sic by me some time but died before morning. I got an amulet off his neck & his cap pouch which I sent home'. The 1856 account begins in dramatic style: 'The first entry in this Diary relates to the explosion which took place within the British Lines during the Siege of Sebastopol. Feb 3rd. I was not many hundred yards from this explosion when it took place & will here relate now Janry 1900 my recollection of it. It took place in Novr. or Decr. 1855. I had just come in from a ride & had given my horse to my Batman when I noticed a vast cloud of smoke shoot up from the Right Siege train an open air arsenal about 500 yds from my house - a tremendous noise of explosion followed & knowing that there would be a rain of missiles from above to fall immediately I jumped under my doorway - hoping the strong lintel would protect me . a shower of fragments fell around me rattling on my iron roof - and wounding many men in the Regiment - 70 men were killed by the explosion some over half a mile off. The artillery horses were passing in front of my door to water & stampeded hurting several men in their rush. Both my horse and my dog bolted. I got the horse back in a few hours - but my dog taken sic a few weeks before out of Sebastopol returned to her old home and was found there weeks afterwards I brought her to England My house that I had just finished building myself did not sustain much damage. .' The account continues packed with incident. At one point he writes: 'I had written the above in 1859 and continue it forty one years after November 4 1900. The events & fights of May 1856 being written so legibly in my brain that I can read much of what we did & said. Alas all the actors except myself are passed away. My notice has been called to the excursion by reading an Illustrated article in a magazine named "Travel" in which Dr. Hy. Lansell has been describing a tour taken last year over the same ground - so little altered from what I saw in 1856 that his description would do for mine'. The diary concludes in fine style. On 2 May 1856 he goes to Yalta where he finds 'the daughters of the English Clerk of the Works of Prince W's Palace were keeping the Hotel a very rough primitive structure low stone built rooms with a long rough wooden verandah overlooking the lovely Bay - We enjoyed an excellent dinner of Turbot & Oyster Sauce & a bottle of excellent local wine like Hock - as we returned we went over the Emperor's Villa Orianda . One day when I remember seeing for the first time a Persian horizontal Water Wheel in a very pretty village embosomed in Walnut Trees where also I bought an embroidered linen neck scarf which I still possess - On another occasion I accompanied Best & Chapman to the Alma & where I picked up the Russian Cannon Ball now on top of the Study Clock - I tried hard to get someone to accompany me to Bagshi Serai & Chuphut Kale but I had to go alone - I wonder now how I dare. For it was in the heart of the Enemies Country. I remember the Priest spit when I went near them in the Church in the Rock and I rode home at night through the Russian Camp on the river Balbec. I certainly felt no fear but that was the Ignorance of youth'. A final note more than half a page long records a meeting at Chatsworth in 1902 with Grand Duke Michael and his wife the Countess Torby. An inset map on upper right shows Singapore Borneo Sumatra and Java where battles took place in the area in early 1942. An inset chart on lower left shows various resources and their location including coal tin and iron ore clearly showing that the war was fought over securing resources. ‎[Civil War – Confederacy] FH, Amanda F H‎

‎A Letter from Richmond Virginia September 1864 Concerning Textile and Flour Shortages‎

‎Richmond Virginia 1864. Single letter measuring 8 x 5 inches one double-sided sheet. Excellent condition. A letter written by “Cousin Amanda†of Richmond Virginia detailing the price and quality of cloth cotton spools and flour available to her late in the American Civil War. The Confederacy was under a blockade and Union forces were destroying anything deemed valuable to the Confederate cause including cotton fields and textile mills causing prices to skyrocket even for inferior goods. Amanda writes that moldy cloth was being sold for what today would be well over $200 per yard:

“At some of the Jews stores today I found yard wide purple calicoes at $12 damaged with yellow spots all over them. The merchants assured they would wash out and Sue Coulling who was with me thought so too but I do not. Not one of them would give me samples to try. . Cotton is from $4 to $5 for a spool.â€

Most shocking is the cost of flour; Amanda thanks her cousin for “letting us have†some flour “so cheap†as “It is $350 here and we certainly expected to pay that.†A little over a year earlier in April of 1863 an armed mob of women in Richmond had marched on the governor’s office in protest of the untenable cost of food storming and looting storehouses in what came to be known as the Richmond Bread Riot.

Of interest for those studying civilian life during the American Civil War and especially textile history. unknown‎

‎Wanted Poster for Grover Cleveland Bergdoll Who Escaped from Prison After Dodging the Draft‎

‎United States 1920. Single 9 ¼ x 12 inch sheet. Some marginal damage else near fine. Offered here is a wanted poster for the “Flashy and dramatic†Grover Cleveland Bergdoll following his escape from a military prison in 1920. Bergdoll 1893–1966 was a wealthy Philadelphian socialite amateur racecar driver and Wright Brothers-trained aviator. In 1917 he failed to report for military service and disappeared from public life. After his capture in 1920—he was hiding inside the Bergdoll Mansion all along—he was stripped of his citizenship and remanded to Castle Williams on Governors Island in New York City.

Not long into his five-year sentence Bergdoll convinced military authorities to release him so that he could retrieve a stash of gold he claimed to have buried in Maryland. Back at his family’s mansion on the way to the supposed hoard he slipped his guards and fled to Canada and then Germany. Despite several foiled kidnapping attempts Bergdoll remained in Germany until 1939 when he returned to the United States—preceded by a wife and five children who arrived in the US in 1935 and pled for clemency for him. Though public opinion on the Great War had shifted Bergdoll was still reviled as a coward and a traitor. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. unknown‎
