This is a translation of a book prepared by the French military Instruction pour l'enseignement de la gymnastique dans les corps de troupes et les établissements militaires.<br /> <br /> The book offers written descriptions of gymnastic exercises followed by plates illustrating many of them. There is also a brief overview of typical gym equipment with plates illustrating possible arrangements of gymnasia. For more information see María José Garrido Asperó's 2016 book Para sanar fortalecer y embellecer los cuerpos. Historia de la gimnasia en la ciudad de México 1824-1876 which discusses this book at some length and reproduces several of the plates. <br /> <br /> 104 one folding 13 pages 4 leaves one folding 24 folding lithographed plates. 7-7/8 by 10-5/8 inches. The final report on the relocation internment and incarceration of Japanese immigrants and of Japanese Americans following the Japanese Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941. <br /> <br /> While the book's chronology begins in January 1942 the chapter called "The Price of Prejudice" notes that the FBI reported on December 11 that more than 1200 Japanese aliens had already been arrested. This report like many of the post-War publications by the staff of the War Relocation Authority is critical of the decision to intern the Japanese and is sympathetic to the hardships Japanese and Japanese Americans faced. The book also covers the little-remembered activities of the Farm Security Administration and the Federal Reserve Bank which was responsible for internees' property.<br /> <br /> xvi 212 pages. A large-format 13-1/2 by 18 inches pamphlet offering suggestions for ad campaigns to encourage Americans to reduce their gasoline consumption to support the war effort. <br /> <br /> This publication aimed at gas station chains and manufacturing company procurement offices offers suggested ad designs and ad copy that encourages conservation ride sharing and reduced speeds in order for refineries to supply more petroleum products for the military. Among the fun facts: it took three tons of gas to drop a one-ton bomb over Germany.<br /> <br /> The cover title of this publication is "The Petroleum Industry's Part in the Gasoline Conservation Drive." A second pamphlet 1944; 30 pages "Information Program: Gasoline Conservation" prepared by the Office of War Information is laid into a pocket at the back.<br /> <br /> 3–70 pages. Handwritten Signalman's Log From May 7th 1918 Through Sept 17 1918 For the USS Calamares AF-18
Atlantic Ocean: USS Calamares. Good. 1918. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This is a small cloth covered hardback trade sized in Good only condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine of the book is mostly gone though the stitching and binding of the book is generally solid condition. There is a faint US Navy Seal on the front cover along with heavy ground-in dirt and previous owner's handwritten doodles and notes. There are approximately 75 leaves making approx. 150 pages. The front endpaper / first text page has been torn vertically and is missing half of the page. The text pages are mostly handwritten in pencil occasional ink marks throughout and are noted in mostly four hour increments written by a number of different hands. The USS Calamares was built in 1913 in Belfast Northern Ireland and was chartered in a contract to the US Navy as a transport / cargo ship during World War I -- during a period of eight months from April to October 1918 the ship made "five voyages to France as part of he Navy's vast responsibility to transport to the American Expeditionary Force reinforcements munitions and supplies." This log includes instructions from the captain written before being translated into flag or light messages and sent to other ships or signals received from other ships and written down before handing over to the bridge. Commanded by CDR. C. L. Arnold. though there is mention of a Commander Sadler . The convoy includes the: Charleston The Talbot The Calhoun The Mallory The Siboney The Maui The Orizaba The Dia de Italia The Calamares The American and The Tenadores Following are some examples: On June 3 1918 : "10: 55 How many smoke boxes Smoke Generator used on board ships for camouflage. have you and how many can you spare." July 3 1918: "10: 50am P. D. L. From Pres. Grant to Calhoun- to Engineer Officer Sixty-five hundred gallons. Two boilers one burner. Each consists hundred and seventy pounds please give us your reports at noon. Sig. Engineer Officer." July 13 1918 "6: 20 pm: P. D. L. To Short Sta. 4V Please send boat for patrol party as we have no reliable motor boat." The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some edge wear rubbing and nicking. The covers have several creases. The text pages are clean and bright. Photographs are by F. C. Huntley and show some of the damage to Hartlepools during the air raid bombings. Included are several articles by local newspapers on the subject. "Hartlepool was a more significant target than the resort town of Scarborough. The port had extensive civilian docks and factories and was defended by three BL 6 inch Mk VII naval guns on the seafront. Two guns were at Heugh Battery and one at Lighthouse Battery. The guns were manned by 11 officers and 155 local men of the Durham Royal Garrison Artillery. The gun crews were warned at 04: 30 of the possibility of an attack and issued live ammunition. At 07: 46 they received word that large ships had been sighted and at 08: 10 a bombardment of the town began. No warning had been given to naval patrols in the area which were meant to be always on duty and the poor weather just before the raid meant that only four destroyers were on patrol while two light cruisers and a submarine which might otherwise have been out remained in Hartlepool harbour. The destroyers HMS Doon Test Waveney and HMS Moy were on patrol whenat 07: 45Doon saw three large vessels approaching which opened fire shortly after. The only weapons the destroyers had capable of damaging a large vessel were torpedoes; they were out of torpedo range and three destroyers turned away. Early resolutions concern the rates of pay for officers' servants equal clothing allowances for commissioned and non-commissioned officers and widow's rights to prize money and equal pay for both black and white volunteers Order No. 31/Public No. 57 and freedom for the wives and children of any army or navy volunteer Order No. 33/Public Resolution No. 25. Also includes several orders relating to the assassination of President Lincoln: Order No. 66 announcing the assassination; Order No. 67 announcing Andrew Johnson's ascent to President; and Order No. 69 announcing the closing of military bases in observance of the funeral of Abraham Lincoln with the official Order of the Procession for the ceremony on April 19th; also includes a Special Order regarding the transportation of President Lincoln's remains to Springfield Illinois and Order No. 72 assigning the Honor Guard to accompany the casket.Orders signed in type by Andrew Johnson concern ending the blockade and restrictions on internal commerce with the exceptions of weapons and gray cloth.Lacking order numbers 15 97 128 133 140 148 & 168 apparently never bound in.Condition Very good. As a captain he fought in the 1857 Expedition against the Cheyenne and the Battle of Solomon's Fork where he commanded the 6th Infantry Regiment.
