‎'Stunts by Fag End': contemporaneous account of first world war experiences by unidentified writer:‎

‎First World War Carbon copy of manuscript. entitled "Stunts by Fag End"‎

‎Without date or place. 3 pages 8vo. On three leaves of paper all creased discoloured and worn some fading with a few tears and pin holes. Lively humorous and well-written account of the army career of a skiver. 'Behold me then the next time in the trenches a Lewis Gunner <in going> my-self to be about to kill Bosches in neat little trenches of 47. As a matter of fact I did not kill one as I never fired the gun but we had one or two thrilling times. . January 1st. 1917 I became a member of the now famous Tank Corps. I said 'Goodbye' to Pack & rifle and received instead a kit bag & revolver it was one of my ambitions to possess a revolver But I was not happy for it was cold very very cold & I hate the cold. I was very thankful though to be out of the trenches where men were being frozen to death.' He then becomes a draughtsman for the Reconnaisance Office 'having an uncle and sic architect' before taking up 'yet another role for my Company R.O. had left his servant behind & so I stepped into his shoes & thus fulfilled the double duties of draughtsman and batman. This went on until just recently when my officer was wounded & went home to Blighty. I have now helped in a minor capacity the preparation for several big 'do's' & travelled hundreds of miles upon the trusty Triumph including one never to be forgotten joy ride to our Rest Camp by the sea where I spent eight days upon which was undoubtedly the best stunt of all viz. doing just what I liked.' Silver gelatin negative photostatic print of two documents: 3pp 4to i.e. each of the three pages on 19.5 x 24 cm. leaf. The first page of Goschen’s two-page ‘Aide Mémoire’ on a separate leaf and the second page and von Jagow’s note on different leaves of a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. N.B. The entire item is a photostatic copy. Reproduced at the head and down the left margin of the first page of Goschen’s text are manuscript notes in German including at top left: "A15930 pr. 4. Goschen’s typed text unsigned begins: ‘Aide Mémoire / Sir Edward Goschen has been informed by Sir Edward Grey the British Foreign Minister that His Majesty the King of the Belgians has addressed to His Majesty King George an appeal for diplomatic intervention on behalf of Belgium.’ The well-known text explains that the German government’s proposal of ‘friendly neutrality entailing free passage through Belgian territory . has been categorically refused by Belgium as a flagrant violation of the Law of Nations’. The British government ask for ‘an assurance that the demand made upon Belgium will not be proceeded with’ and ‘Sir Edward Goschen is instructed to ask for an immediate reply.’ Von Jagow’s note reads: ‘Ich habe Sir E. ‎Bruce Bairnsfather Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather cartoonist who created the First World War "Fragments from France" characters Old Bill Bert and Alf. Autograph Signature with that of the baritone Kennerley Rumford Clara Butt's husband.‎

‎Without date or place circa 1920. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. A bold untidy and yet stylish signature in exactly the state one would hope to find Bairnfather moniker. It gives the impression of having been sent post-haste from the trenches scrawled in pencil on a piece of vertically-ruled paper torn out of a notebook ruckled and grubby and laid down on an unruckled and clean 15.5 x 9.5 cm leaf with rounded edges torn from an autograph album. The signature ‘Bruce / Bairnsfather’ is across the head of the landscape page with a jagged line intended for the flourish by Bairnsfather across the foot. On the reverse of the album leaf with marvellous incongruity is the signature of ‘R Kennerley Rumford. / CLARA BUTT’S HUSBAND. / 26.2.20.’ See Image. Without date or place [circa 1920]. unknown‎

‎The letters to ‘Mr. Cameron’ dated 21 December 1938 and 9 January 1939; both from 35a Woburn Square WC1 London. The card undated early 1939 with London postmark. See his entry in Grove’s. Each with his firm signature 'John Goss'. The two letters in fair condition on aged and creased paper folded for postage the first of the two with a short closed tear to one edge. The card in good condition lightly aged. ONE: TLS to ‘Mr. Cameron’ 21 December 1938. 1p 4to. Cameron’s letter ‘to the convener of the Musician’s Group of the Left Book Club’ has been passed to him. ‘I do not think there are any members of the Group that have sufficient drawing power to make it worth your while bringing them all the way from London.’ With regard to ‘stars’ he advises him to ‘write direct to anyone you want. If you write to a number of them you are more than likely to get one or two acceptances. I am sure Mr. A.K. Holland could make you out a list of names and I can add the addresses if you don’t know them.’ He concludes: ‘It is not difficult to get artists to perform for Spain Relief these days but in most cases I think that such people prefer not to be approached through a third party.’ TWO: TLS to ‘Mr. Cameron 9 January 1939. 1p 4to. ‘I shall be very happy indeed to come to Liverpool for your concert on February 15th. I don’t flatter myself that this will make any real difference to its success.’ He hopes Cameron has ‘written to all the famous people you can think of. If you are too shy to do this get Holland to do it. Musicians will do anything for a critic!’ The letter ends: ‘I take it you have a first-class accompanist.’ THREE: TCS addressed to ‘Miss Cameron / 28 Queens Road / HOYLAKE / Cheshire.’ With stamp and smudged postmark. Headed in red ink: ‘SPANISH AND CELEBRITY CONCERT. / Central Hall Liverpool. Tuesday March 7th.’ A follow-up concert to the one of 15 February 1939. ‎Sir Reginald Tupper Royal Navy admiral. Two Autograph Letters Signed from him to Gerald Henderson with two Autograph Letters Signed from his second wife Lady Caroline Tupper 'Carrie' also to Henderson.‎

‎Tupper’s letters: 3 and 10 February 1937 both on letterhead of 22 Draycott Place S.W.3. London. Lady Tupper’s letters: 17 December 1943 on letterhead of The King’s House Walton-on-Thames Surrey; and 13 July 1944; on Draycott Place letterhead. See his entry in the Oxford DNB which states: ‘After the death of his first wife he married second on 24 June 1933 Caroline Maud Abadie 1863–1948 the widow of General Sir Henry Richard Abadie; she was the daughter of Colonel Fanshawe Gostling of the Royal Berkshire regiment.’ In addition to the two letters apiece from Sir Reginald and Lady Tupper the material includes as Item Five a leaf carrying a 26-line postscript from Lady Tupper to a lost letter. All but Item Five below are on uniform 12mo leaves of grey paper. In good overall condition apart from Item Three which is aged and worn. ONE: Tupper to Henderson 3 February 1937. 1p 12mo. In envelope addressed to Henderson at Rex Cottage 7 Streets Mews Mayfair. Signed ‘Reginald Tupper’. Inviting him to dinner ‘Dinner jacket & black tie’. TWO: Tupper to Henderson 10 February 1937. 2pp 12mo. In envelope as One and similarly sign. Reassuring him with regard to a letter he sent informing the Tuppers of his wife’s illness: ‘it was not a “party†we had invited 2 clever men to meet you but hope it is only a pleasure deferred. We are moving down to Burhill next week - & hope you will be able to bring Mrs. Henderson down to see the Kings House - we are about 2 1/2 miles from Walton Station’. THREE: Lady Tupper to Henderson’s wife 17 December 1943. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. No envelope. Signed ‘Carrie Tupper’. She thanks her for a ‘lovely miniature’: ‘It is so good of you to have painted it for us. & Mr. Henderson for bringing it round this morning. It was so nice to see him but I was distressed to hear of your accident’ which has happened at ‘a trying time’. She continues with reference to Christmas and her ‘much prized miniatures’. FOUR: Lady Tupper to Henderson. 7pp 12mo. On two loose leaves of grey paper and a matching bifolium. In envelope addressed to him at the Princess Beatrice Hospital London. Signed as Three. 67 lines of text written in a difficult hand for which she apologises twice in the letter writing at the end: ‘My hand so crippled I can’t form my letters.’ The letter appears to concern her health and the recipient’s with a reference to ‘an abscess in my foot’. FIVE: Lady Tupper to Henderson. 2pp 12mo. Final part of lost letter comprising the 26-line two-page postscript. This is clearly written with some animation regarding a number of individuals including members of the Abadie family but is unfortunately practically indecipherable. Tupper’s letters: 3 and 10 February 1937, both on letterhead of 22 Draycott Place, S.W.3. [London]. Lady Tupper’s letters: 1 unknown‎

‎Admiral Sir Reginald Tupper Royal Navy officer active in the First World War. Autograph Letter Signed from his second wife ‘Carrie Caroline Tupper’ to ‘Mrs. Henderson’ concerning her husband’s ill health within a few months of his death.‎

‎17 September 1944. On letterhead of 22 Draycott Place S.W.3 London. See the entry on Admiral Tupper in the Oxford DNB: ‘After the death of his first wife he married second on 24 June 1933 Caroline Maud Abadie 1863-1948 the widow of General Sir Henry Richard Abadie; she was the daughter of Colonel Fanshawe Gostling of the Royal Berkshire regiment.’ 4pp 12mo. On two leaves of blue paper in stamped and postmarked envelope addressed to ‘Mrs. Henderson / c/o Lady Edwina Lewin / Salthrop House / Wroughton / Wilts.’ A long letter in a not entirely straightforward hand. She begins by discussing the recipient’s husband’s improving health she appears to say the handwriting makes the entire transcription doubtful that she ‘has had a dreadful “night mare†time’ over her husband’s health: ‘he began working again at “The Chelsea Reserve W†with Colonel Boyes-Lyon and did too much & had heart attack on July 29th. when I had to take him into the Royal Masonic Hospital for a specialist to attend’. This takes us around half-way through the letter. The second half is no less opaque. 17 September 1944. On letterhead of 22 Draycott Place, S.W.3 [London] unknown‎

‎Printing House Square London: ‘Reprinted from The Times June 18 1940’. A nice piece of WW2 RAF ephemera written on the eve of the Battle of Britain. Scarce: the only copies on JISC at the National Library of Scotland and Bishopsgate Institute in London. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. The ‘Text of the Letter’ is printed across the centrefold with an introduction on the first page reading: ‘Among the personal belongings of a young R.A.F. pilot in a Bomber Squadron who was recently reported “Missing believed killed†was a letter to his mother - to be sent to her if he were killed. / “This letter was perhaps the most amazing one I have ever read; simple and direct in its wording but splendid and uplifting in its outlook†says the young officer’s station commander. “It was inevitable that I should read it - in fact he must have intended this for it was left open in order that I might be certain that no prohibited information was disclosed. / “I sent the letter to the bereaved mother and asked her whether I might publish it anonymously as I feel its contents may bring comfort to other mothers and that every one in our country may feel proud to read of the sentiments which support ‘an average airman’ in the execution of his present arduous duties. I have received the mother’s permission and I hope this letter may be read by the greatest possible number of our countrymen at home and abroad.â€â€™ The letter in smaller type begins: ‘Dearest Mother - Though I feel no premonition at all events are moving rapidly and I have instructed that this letter be forwarded to you should I fail to return from one of the raids which we shall shortly be called upon to undertake.’ Concludes: ‘I count myself fortunate in that I have seen the whole country and known men of every calling. But with he final test of war I consider my character fully developed. Thus at my early age my earthly mission is already fulfilled and I am prepared to die with just one regret and one only - that I could not devote myself to making your declining years more happy by being with you; but you will live in peace and freedom and I shall have directly contributed to that so here again my life will not have been in vain. / Your loving Son’. ‎The Great Duke of Wellington conqueror of Napoleon at Waterloo and two-time Tory Prime Minister. Manuscript Letter in the third person apparently written by a secretary.‎

‎'London March 7 1842.'. One of the great figures in world history. See his entries in Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Oxford DNB. On one side of piece of laid paper rougly 11 cm squarer with partial watermark ‘J G’. In fair condition lightly aged and creased with traces of mount on blank reverse. Folded twice. Reads: ‘London March 7 1842 / F M The Duke of Wellington presents his Compliments to Miss Busby / Not being resident at Oxford he has no Controul sic over any matter relating to the Bodleian Library. / Miss Busby should apply to the Vice Chancellor. -’ The identity of the actual writer of the letter has been questioned in pencil at the foot of page with ‘Qy Secy’ i.e. ‘Query Secretary’ and the doubt does not seem unjustified. It may well be that this item is in the Duke’s hand - the writing certainly has his characteristic slope - but although it is superficially similar there are several elements in the calligraphy that raise a strong doubt: the ‘L’ and ‘M’ of the date ‘London March’; all four initials in ‘F M The Duke’ the fact that the second ‘l’ in ‘Wellington’ is looped and in particular the fact that the ‘r’ in ‘resident’ and ‘n’ in ‘no’ begin below the line of writing which is not a characteristic observed in the Duke’s writing at any period. See Image. 'London March 7 1842.' unknown‎
