‎[Civil War].‎

‎Diary of the Great Rebellion. Containing a Complete Summary of Each Day’s Events from the Inauguration of the Rebellion at Charleston S. C. December 20 1860 to the First of January 1862.‎

‎
Pamphlet 16mo original printed wrappers 64 pp. Light wear and a couple of very minor edge chips or folds covers a little faded and aged slight foxing; otherwise very good plus or better. Somewhat scarce day-by-day accounting of the first year of the Civil War published in 1862. The title indicates this is the pocket edition but it's unclear if it was issued in another format. The pamphlet includes a day-by-day account of the war taken from "Official Reports" and daily newspapers. Nice little contemporary account of the war. Sabin 19960.
Bixler & Winchester,‎

‎Revolutionary War Depreciation of Pay Document.‎

‎
A one page partially printed and manuscript folio sheet 13" x 8 1/4" considerable manuscript text on the reverse. Some browning and aging a few tiny chips or holes at folds top edge with a couple of nicks; otherwise very good. This document basically transfers pay owed to William Champlin of Rensselaer County New York who served under Colonel Robert Elliot to a Samuel Dorrance of Providence Rhode Island. Champlin appears to appoint Dorrance as his substitute to collect the balance of fourteen pounds fifteen shillings and five pence. The document is signed by various others. There is a fair amount of manuscript text on the reverse which appears to transfer the debt to at least one additional person. Provenance: The Calvin Otto Collection.
‎

‎[War of 1812].‎

‎Report In Part Of The Committee Appointed On So Much Of The President’s Message As Respects Our Foreign Relations. November 22 1808…‎

‎
Pamphlet 8vo paperbound 16 pp. Partially disbound but still in tact. Normal aging and browning with some chips and folds at the extremities. Also slight fold at the center and early owner’s signature on title page. About very good. Very interesting pamphlet prepared during the Madison administration that takes a look at the challenges facing a new country. For the most part the report addresses the belligerent acts of England and France prior to the War of 1812. The report also challenges the legality of the British blockade and the taking of our ships on the high seas. Importantly it points out that France is no better than the English in this respect and that it would be hard to justify war against one without the same treatment of the other. However the authors were also very realistic about going to war with both England and France who were "two of the most powerful nations in the world". The report recommends that we not submit to French and English legal rationalizations for their actions and that we not allow their ships into our ports. Wisely it also suggests we improve our defenses. The OCLC seems to locate only a couple of copies. OCLC.
A. & G., Printers,‎

‎American Caricatures Pertaining to the Civil War.‎

‎
Oblong 8vo cloth gilt title on top cover and spine illustrated. Top hinge a little weak but firm some extremity wear and back cover wear normal aging; otherwise very good plus. This little work includes a short history of political caricature from James Gillray to Thomas Nast. This is a charming collection of political humor that includes views on major events to those that have long been forgotten. The themes are of course relevant to the day and express sentiments at that time. Some are racist like a cartoon of Abe Lincoln sitting on a woodpile labeled the 'Republican Platform' showing a black person under the pile and with a caption "The Nigger in the Woodpile." Another cartoon features a general representing the Union hitting various Southern leaders linked to secession with a club.
Brentano's,‎

‎[Butcher Family Archive].‎

‎Letters and Documents of the Butcher Family Recording some Family History.‎

‎
Small family archive of letters 10 pieces in all some folio size other basic letter sheet size over 20 pages of text some docketed on reverse. Most pages are aged and browned some chips and tears a few holes at center folds a little staining but otherwise about very good. This family archive begins with a letter dated June 14 1840 and provides a glimpse of life in still early America during the pioneer period. In the first letter which is. from near Danville Missouri daughter Emily Lee and Adam Lee to father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia asking for money. Emily complains about poor health but tells him to consider moving out there where good land could be had. Another letter dated September 24 1840 is from Rock Island County Illinois from John H. Butcher to his father Ely in Randolph Virginia. John Butcher a farmer tells his father he is in "tolerable good health" but talks about some hard times where he lives. He comments on the rivers being very low and it appears his shipping costs were double what they should be. He stays he finds times very hard in this country harder than expected and adds he couldn't get $1000 for his home at that time. He even makes a comment about a split in government but that the Whigs may feel they won writing not totally clear on this comment. On January 2 1842 from Danville Missouri we see another letter from Emily Lee to her father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia. This letter has a sad tone as Emily complains she hasn't gotten a letter from her father in almost two years despite writing to him a few times. She says she feels neglected by her father and brothers and times are very hard. She mentions store credit is not available and they lost a horse. According to Emily her in-laws are no help and she has eight children to take care of. She tells her father she will see him in the spring and she expects him to do something about her situation. Seems like Ely's kids are often in need and asking dad for help. On August 20 1844 John Butcher In Rock Island Illinois to Ely Butcher in Beverly Randolph County Virginia appears to be visited by his sister and his brother-in-law and sister Adam Lee and Emily lee. The farm is doing well and he indicates that oat and corn prices are "tolerable" and he expects to produce 800 bushes of corn and wheat. It appears his sister wants a divorce and it also appears John asks his father to intercede with his uncle Peyton about the land he uses. He seems to be tired of being a renter. He asks his father to negotiate a deal and help him pay for it. He apologizes for the tone of the letter but sounds a little desperate. There are also what appears to be some detailed receipts for the goods of Ely Butcher the dates appear to be 1842 and 1843. In fourth receipt the date is unclear but could be as late as 1866. A final document is a marriage certificate for Hannah Hart Butcher and the date is November 22 1911.
‎

‎
Newspaper folded six columns 8 pp. Some splits and tears at folds with some loss of text a couple of small pieces are missing creasing and chipping mostly in margins paper in a somewhat fragile state. Paper is folded in half at this point. Overall condition fair for newsprint. An exciting piece of Civil War history published the day before Lee surrendered. The paper is full of Civil War coverage including the capture of six Confederate Generals Sheridan's route of a rebel army and Lee's army broken up. The Times article talks of victory and the demise of the Confederate army. This issue is at the end of the Civil War and about a week before Lincoln would be assassinated.
‎

‎Autograph Letter from Stephen Lush to Jellis Jacob Fonda.‎

‎4 page letter sheet I pp of text 13 lines of test signed and mailed remnant of wax seal labeled duplicate docketed on last page. Legible probably a second copy made for legal purposes signed by author some wear at folds and some staining second sheet split and cracked a bit but text page in very good condition. Interesting letter that appears to have the wrong date on the front page. What appears to be January 20 1706 should read January 20 1786 according to the docketted date on the last page. The letter is written by Stephen Lush 1753-1825 to Jellis Jacob Fonda 1751-1839. It relates to taxes on land in New York owned jointly by Lush and Fonda. John Lansing an attorney and former delegate to the Constitutional Convention seems to have resquested the payment of one shilling per acre on the 40000 of acres they own jointly. Provides some interesting content on land taxation for the period. Lush practiced law in Albany until the War for Independence; he was commissioned a captain and saw action in New York City but was captured by the British. Major Fonda was considered one of the first patriots of Schenectady and after Lexington he formed a company of Minutemen. He fought in the Campaign against Burgoyne and at the Battle of Bemis Heights. Fonda organization website. ny education government website.‎

‎Green-Back to His Country Friends.‎

‎Pamphlet 8vo original green printed wrappers 17 pp. Wrappers chipped and torn with a few small pieces missing from the margins back wrapper almost detached vertical tear on cover repaired on verso a few pages with tears at extremities light toning; else very good. This is a scarce and unusual item that gives a different political message from the Civil War period. The author who calls himself Green-Back seems to object to the failures of politicians of his day and in fact this is an open letter to the 37th Congress. Sounds like he has Copperhead leanings but his key message is that it was time for the Representatives and represented come to an understanding. He seems to think that Congress is too busy or distracted with the needs of slaves and related issues to take care of other business. According to Green-Back Congress doesn't seem to have much time for other affairs because of their plans "for the full development of their much admired and more beloved Congo men". He also seems dissatisfied with the press who he suggests instigated or helped cause the war and whom only present a one sided view of the war.‎

‎
Pamphlet 8vo removed illustrated 86 pp. Probably lacking self wrappers dbd removed some notes on title last leaf folded in the lower corner; normal aging and browning; otherwise a good copy. This pamphlet is a U.S. Sanitary Commission report that includes four pretty dramatic illustrations taken from photographs of Union soldiers in a very emaciated condition. The photographs were taken shortly after the prisoners returned from Belle Isle. The commission appears to be headed by Valentine Mott former head of the medical department at the University of New York who was to find out if the sufferings of the POWs were a deliberate action of the Rebel Government or were the result of matters a beyond their control. Another edition of this work was published in Philadelphia in the same year. A map of the Andersonville prison is also included.
‎

‎Collection of 11 Official Letters and Documents Relating to Kentucky in the Civil War.‎

‎11 manuscript letters six on official letterheads of Quatermaster's or Assistant Quartermaster's offices. Archive appears to have been saved from a fire at some point as there is a bit of scorching paper a bit dry some staining darkening at some folds writing often faded a few tears at folds with some minor paper loss; otherwise in good condition. Despite the somewhat faded nature of the writing the content appears to relate mostly to transportation matters and supplies. The letters are from Louisville Columbus and Paducah mostly and provide some insight into the behind the scenes activities of the Union Army in this area.‎

‎[Civil War].‎

‎Manuscript Letter From a Union Soldier in Memphis Tennessee.‎

‎Letter sheet 8x10 4 pages 3 1/2 pages of text. Some very minor bends at edges a couple of very minor nicks creased a little slight aging and browning; otherwise in really nice condition. This highly legible letter to a father from his son talks about more than the "usual" life in an army camp. There are certainly routine matters covered like receiving letters from family members and requests for money but he also talks about his legal misfortunes. While it is unclear what issues are involved it is clear he has some military legal problems which he hopes to resolve by the time his regiment is 'mustered." The letter makes it sound like it is something important and probably related to his military standing. His father appears to suggest that he should take his case to Washington but the son decides to wait it out. The son Jon indicates that while he feels badly over his misfortunes he really feels badly for his friends and relatives. This suggests along with a comment about handling the impact on public opinion that this case was a visible one. He also complains about the cost of living in the South which he says is twice what it is in the North and indicates he pays $10 per week for boarding. That would seem to be very high when measured at a soldier's pay during this period. He does throw in a couple of comments about the war including that "Sherman too is still in successful pursuit." he also states that nothing is heard from General Smith "but his safety and success is a thing assured."‎

‎4 page lettersheet 9 3/4x 8 1 1/2 pages of text with docketing and commentary by several officials on the 4th page. Some soiling and aging to the last page a little toning; otherwise very good or better. The letter from Woods attempts to resolve what must have been a common problem in the Union Army during the Civil War which was the red tape involved in battle field promotions. Woods 'was mustered into the Service of the United Sates as an enlisted man. on the 29th day of July 1861 at Washington City D.C. by Lieut. Jno. Elwood. On the 14 day of Decbr. I was promoted to the 2nd Lieutenancy in said Co. vice Lieutenant Donaldson died May 15th 1862 but did not receive my Commission as such until 5th day pf March 1863 since which time I have actually performing the duty of 2nd Lieut. in said company and as such I have been on the muster and pay rolls for March and April. I would respectfully ask the Order mustering me out as an enlisted man being 2nd Serge. of said Company when I received my commission and ordering my muster in as 2nd Lieut. to date from March 5 1863. I have made efforts to be mustered but without success. " Perhaps even more interesting are the comments by several officials on the forth page trying to cut through the 'red tape'.‎

‎[ British Military Mission to Italy, First World War ] [Missione Militare di Sua Maesta Britannica, Addetta al Comando Supremo,‎

‎First World War: British Military Mission to Italy. Four Autograph Letters Signed from 'Charlie' to 'Nonna' with reference to 'intrigues' his superior Delmé-Radcliffe and a visit to Austrian trenches in 'the Caroo'.‎

‎All four on letterheads of the 'Missione Militare di Sua Maestà Britannica Addetta al Comando Supremo Italia' British Military Mission Italian Army in the Field . 30 December 1916; 10 January and 16 and 20 June 1917. Four interesting and evocative letters. The identity of the writer is not known. All but the third letter are addressed to 'Dearest Nonna' who appears to be married to 'George' and living in Viareggio. ONE: 30 December 1916. 2pp. 4to. 'This place is simply a nest of intrigues and I wish I had some of your dear familys clever brains to sort things out a bit & put them right. I loathe the double-faced dealing necessary to combat intrigues and am afraid I may lose my temper one day & tell them what I think of them - & that wd be fatal. Besides one wants the subtle brains of your sex to <truly> unravel matters in such a tangled skein. Can't you “Marconi†me some' He continues with reference to a visit by 'the nice 16 year old son of Ninettes friend' there is a further reference to 'Carlo & Ninette' who has invited him 'out to Martignacco'. Long signed pencil postscript. TWO: 10 January 1917. 2pp. 4to. 'Delme Radcliffe Brig. Gen.Sir Charles Delmé-Radcliffe 1864-1937 Chief of the Mission is back from Rome but news of the Conference is not allowed to leak out tho' I suppose we shall hear about it in time. A Col. Wyndham our Mil Attache at Berne who was in the Rifle Bde has come to stay a few days & I found his most amusing & interesting over the German propaganda in Switzerland. He says that the news from Germany is most cheering for us – that Germany will be starved out unless peace supervenes in 2 months!!!' He has been meeting 'such a lot' of her friends and mentions 'Gulinalli who is a-de-c to a Genl. Sani' 'Young Boris' and 'â€<Nernia Giglieri> whose name I remember in Florence some time back'. He will describe 'a glorious day in the Caroo' he has had later. THREE: 16 June 1917. 2pp. 4to. He has not been able to write because of 'difficulties here'. Delmé-Radcliffe 'D. R.' has been away in England for a fortnight'. He describes the trip to 'Caroo' 'wandering along the banks of a nice little trout stream with men bathing in it'. He took 'a peep from behind sandbags into a line of Austrian trenches where I wd have willingly played <> to try to pick off the Austrian if he had come anywhere in sight – but no such luck!!!' FOUR: 20 June 1917. 1p. 4to. He has not 'been very well lately' and has 'decided to ask for a Medical Board & later leave home for a spell'. He had 'half intended going to Viareggio' but thinks his own 'home air' will do him more good 'as it will be more of a complete change' but hopes to be able to manage a visit to her later. The letter concludes with a reference to 'Ninette' and in the hope that 'you & George are very well.' All four on letterheads of the 'Missione Militare di Sua Maestà Britannica, Addetta al Comando Supremo, Italia' [ British Milit unknown‎

‎Rare Nazi Concentration Camp Artifact: Metal Slave Laborer Registration Card found on location in the soil of a former Mittelbau-Dora satellite camp. Embossed with Inmate Personal Details.‎

‎Print. . ~ ~ NOTE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ . Metal registration card measuring ca. 6x13 cm. ~ An extremely rare archaeological find of a Nazi Period artifact. Found on location at one of Mittelbau-Dora satellite camps. This metal Nazi Concentration Camp Slave Laborer Registration Card is hardly ever seen outside a display at a museum. These cards by definition never left the administration of the concentration camp in which they were kept and after liberation moved to the custody of the memorials and the museums. In contrast the "Arbeitsbuch" the personal identification document of the slave laborer was carried by inmates into their liberation and consequently is to be found in abundance on the market even generations later. The metal card was found on location in the soil of the former Mittelbau-Dora satellite camp. It is embossed with full details of a particular inmate. A special machine was needed for producing this. The writing remains almost perfectly legible. The general condition is good for an excavated item the corrosion patina dust and soil remained untouched and bear witness to the period. Reaching far beyond the value of a single collectible of Nazi memorabilia this artifact is an archeological piece of history and should be treasured as such. The last photo shows a display of such cards at the Buchenwald Memorial Museum from Librarium's collection. --

unknown‎

‎[ The Budapest War Cemetery; The British Military Cemetery at Solymar, Hungary ]:‎

‎The British Military Cemetery at Solymár Hungary. Long typescript titled 'The Budapest War Cemetery' including a 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' with letter by the Hungarian author and photographs and negatives.‎

‎Covering letter dated from Budapest Hungary 8 April 1985. 27pp. 8vo. The article on 'The Budapest War Cemetery' is 7pp. 8vo and the accompanying 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' is 21pp. 8vo. There is also a page of 'Abbreviations to the Register'. A few manuscript emendations. The covering letter is addressed to 'David' and is effusive in its offer of further assistance the author urging 'David' to rewrite the piece as he sees fit. It is signed faintly and undecipherably. The author writes in good but not entirely idiomatic English and has gone to some trouble. The article describes the wartime background to the establishment of 'The English Cemetery at Solymár' from the first man buried there Flight Sergeant Gordon G. Pemberton an Australian pilot of a Wellington bomber shot down on the night of 3 April 1944. The 'Register' lists the 205 graves each with all the information to be found on the tombstone. Also present are four strips of negatives with one larger negative of a single image and a contact sheet strip reproducing the 35 pictures on the negative strips. The last is annotated on the reverse in pencil. Also included are three black and white photographs described as 'three bad prints' in the letter: one of the cemetery in snow and the other two of Pemberton's crashed Wellington bomber. Covering letter dated from Budapest [ Hungary ], 8 April 1985. unknown‎
