The Bailey Bridge--Normal Uses: Military Engineering Volume III Part III
London England United Kingdom: Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1954. Reprint. Reprinted with Amendments Nos. 1 to 5. Wraps. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on contents page. iv 145 1 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams. Numerous fold-out diagrams. War Office Code No. 7481. This was derived from the Military Engineering Volume III Part II pamphlet No 12 from 1942. It represented the state of the art state of knowledge and the state of practice at the end of the Second World War through the beginning of the Korean War era. From Wikipedia: "The Bailey bridge is a type of portable pre-fabricated truss bridge. It was developed by the British during World War II for military use and saw extensive use by both British and the American military engineering units. A Bailey bridge had the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to construct. The wood and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be carried in trucks and lifted into place by hand without requiring the use of a crane. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks. Bailey bridges continue to be extensively used in civil engineering construction projects and to provide temporary crossings for foot and vehicle traffic. Donald Bailey was a civil servant in the British War Office who tinkered with model bridges as a hobby. He presented one such model to his chiefs who saw some merit in the design. A team of Royal Engineer RE officers was assembled at the Military Engineering Experimental Establishment MEXE in Barrack Road Christchurch Dorset in 1941 and 1942; among them were Robin Foulkes Darrell Herbert John de Waele and Bill Buckle all R.E. subalterns at the time. In the course of development the bridge was tested in several formats e.g. as a suspension bridge and as a "stepped arch" bridge as well as the flat truss bridge which became the standard. The prototype of this was used to span Mother Siller's Channel which cuts through the nearby Stanpit Marshes an area of marshland at the confluence of the River Avon Hampshire and the River Stour Dorset. It remains there WikiMiniAtlas 50°43′ 31″ N 1°45′ 44″ W / 50.7252806°N 1.762155°W / 50.7252806; -1.762155 as a functioning bridge. Bridges in the other formats were built temporarily to cross the Avon and Stour in the meadows nearby. After successful development and testing the bridge was taken into service by the Corps of Royal Engineers and first used in North Africa in 1942. A number of bridges were available by 1944 for D-Day when production was accelerated. The US also licensed the design and started rapid construction for their own use. Bailey was later knighted for his invention which continues to be widely produced and used today. 1 The original design however violated a patent on the Callender-Hamilton bridge. The designer of that bridge A. M. Hamilton successfully applied to the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors. The Bailey bridge however had several advantages over Hamilton's design. For example damaged parts could not be replaced quickly on the Callender-Hamilton bridge an essential requirement for military use. The Callender-Hamilton bridge was modified by the London County Council engineers' department in the design of three emergency bridges which were erected across the River Thames in 1940. Damaged parts of these could be quickly replaced. Experience gained in this work contributed to the development of the Bailey Bridge. Hamilton was awarded £4 000 in 1936 by the War Office for the use of his early bridges and the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors awarded him £10 000 in 1954 for the use mainly in Asia of his later bridges. Lieutenant General Sir Giffard Le Quesne Martel was awarded £500 for infringement on the design of his box girder bridge the Martel bridge." Her Majesty's Stationery Office paperback

Land-Grant Percentages Revised to June 30 1937 Circular No. 5-A
Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1937. Revised edition. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling. Small tear at top of front spine. v 1 142 p. This type of ephemeral publication rarely survives. This provides a baseline for cost-estimation on war production transportation costs just prior to the U.S. entry into WWII This cancels Circular No. 5 OQMG 1929 and supplements Nos. 1 and 2 thereto. Without the assistance of the U.S. government railroad construction between 1860 and 1900 would have been greatly curtailed. Building a railroad was an expensive venture. Private banks fearing the railroad companies would need a long time to pay off their debts were reluctant to loan money to the companies. To remedy the situation Congress provided assistance to the railroad companies in the form of land grants. The land grant railroads receiving millions of acres of public land sold the land to make money built their railroads and contributed to a more rapid settlement of the West. In the end four out of the five transcontinental railroads were built with help from the federal government. The figures shown herein have been prepared in the General Accounting Office and checked and approved by proper officials in the railroads concerns. Percentages of deductions shown herein apply between points on individual land-grans railroads only. United States Government Printing Office paperback

Ordnance Maintenance: U.S. Rifles Cal. 30: M1 M1C Sniper's and M1D Sniper's: War Department Technical Manual: TM 9-1275
Washington DC: U. S. Governemnt Printing Office 1947. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket as issued. Cover has some wear and soiling. Stamp on front cover blacked over. 104 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams index. References. This manual supersedes TM 9-1275 6 November 1942 including C 1 15 May 1943; TB 23-5-6 5 June 1944; TB ORD 207 28 September 1944; OFSTB 9-1275-5 28 June 1943; and so much of TB ORD 272 26 March 1945 as pertains to materiel covered in this manual. This manual represents the state of knowledge and the standards of practice after consideration of the experience gained during the Second World War. Information on Sniper rifles is extremely scarce. Contents include: Introduction; INspection Prior to Disassembly; Tools Gages and Fixtures; General Maintenance; Barrel and Receiver Group; Trigger Housing Group; Stock and Hand Guards; Equipment; Function Firing and Final Inspection; Malfunctions and Corrections; Appendix References; and Index. This manual is published for the information and guidance of ordnance maintenance personnel. It contains detailed instructions for inspection disassembly maintenance and repair of the U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1; U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1C sniper's; and the U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1D sniper's. This manual does not contain general assembly or disassembly or information which is intended primarily for the using arms since such information is available to ordnance maintenance personnel in FM 23-5. Where "repair tolerances" as opposed to tolerances for new manufacture have been set up such repair tolerances will continue in use. If additional tolerances or variations are desired submit a specific request to the Chief of Ordnance. Only rifles having the new spline-type gas cylinder are to be rebuilt. The receivers on rifles having the old type gas cylinders are of early manufacture and cause "eleven o'clock" feed stoppages. They are identified by the top of the front feed rib being cut away instead of coming up to a square corner. Since the M1 M1C and M1D rifles are basically the same mechanically as well as in operation and functioning the disassembly assembly inspection maintenance and repair are covered generally. Characteristics: The U.S. rifles cal. .30 M1 M1C and M1D are gas-operated clip-loaded air cooled semiautomatic shoulder weapons. These rifles may be equipped with gun sling M1907 leather or gun sling M1 webbing. When desired grenade launcher M7 or M7A1 or bayonet M1 may be used with the rifles. Difference Between Models: The U.S. rifles cal. .30 M1 M1C and M1D are basically the same. However rifles of early and present manufacturer of the same model may differ somewhat due to changes in design of some of the component parts. The U.S. rifle M1C sniper's is the standard U.S. rifle M1 with telescope M81 or M82 mounted on the receiver and a cheek pad laced to the stock. The flash hider M2 is furnished as an accessory with the M1C and M1D models. The U.S. rifle M1D differs from the U.S. rifle M1C sniper's only in the design of the telescope mount and bracket. On the M1C model the telescope is held in a removable mount having a dovetailed slide mating with that of a bracket permanently attached to the receiver and locked in place by means of two locking screws. On the M1D model the telescope is held in a removable mount which in turn is attached to a fixed base on the barrel of the rifle by means of one screw and dowel pin. U. S. United States War Department Army 27th Division
General Orders
New York City France: United States Army 27th Division 1917. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Wraps. Fair. Signed by previous owner. Two hole cloth bound binder. General Orders 1-33 # 16 absent for 1917. General Orders 1-40 111 120-125 128-129 132 134-140. A remarkable substantial set of WWI Divisional General Orders covering the Division for the time Major General John O'Ryan assumed command on July 25 1917 to General Order 140 of August 25 1918. This may have belonged to Major later Colonel John Tabor Loree who after the war was a senior official at the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. From Wikiepedia: "The 27th Infantry Division was a unit of the Army National Guard in World War I and World War II. The division traces its history from the New York Division formed originally in 1908. The 6th Division designation was changed to the 27th Division in July 1917. When the New York Division was organized in 1908 the New York National Guard became the second state after Pennsylvania to structure its National Guard at such a high tactical level in peacetime. The New York Division was called to active duty during the Mexican border crisis of 1916. While on federal duty it was redesignated as the 6th Division in June 1916. It was released from active duty in December 1916 only to be recalled for World War I service in July 1917. The 6th Division was reorganized and redesignated as the 27th Division on 1 October 1917.Called into federal service on July 15 1917 the Twenty-Seventh Division hastily recruited to increase its numbers and late in August was concentrated at Camp Wadsworth near Spartanburg SC for intensive training. In the spring of 1918 the division began its movement toward embarkation camps. The division s advance detachment left Hoboken on May 2 and arrived at Brest France May 10 1918. Until July 24 the division was in the final stages of training under British mentors in Picardy and Flanders. On July 25 the 27th Division occupied the Dickebusch Lake and Scherpenberg sectors in Flanders. The great Somme "push " lasting from September 24 to October 1 saw the 27th engaged in severe fighting along the Saint Quentin Canal Tunnel. Later the Twenty-Seventh Division was back into action again moving steadily toward Busigny. Major Operations: Meuse-Argonne only the artillery Ypres-Lys Somme offensive. Battle of Dickebusche Lake Summer 1918 Battle of Vierstratt Ridge Summer 1918 Hindenburg Line September 1918. Somme Offensive 25 September 1918 Selle River November 1918" United States Army, 27th Division hardcover

Excerpts from an on-line encyclopedia posting: "military bridge temporary bridge that must usually be constructed in haste by military engineers from available materials frequently under fire. The earliest types historically were pontoon bridges i.e. floating bridges that rest on stationary boats. By the 17th century bridging equipment was part of the train of European and Turkish armies with pontoons fashioned not only of timber but also of leather copper and tin. Pneumatic pontoons with steel roadways made their appearance during World War II. Military trestles were built in considerable numbers in the wars of the 19th century. Military pontoon bridges are usually built either by successively extending outward from the shore or by constructing whole sections as rafts and floating them into position. Truss bridges for use where riverbanks are steep or navigation must be kept open are made up in panels readily bolted together. Military truss bridges were pioneered in World War II by the highly successful British-invented Bailey bridge which played an especially important role in the Allied campaign in Italy." United States War Department Chief of the Air Corps
Basic Photography Technical Manual No. 1-219; TM 1-219
Washington DC: United States War Department 1941. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good. 342 2 pages. Illustrations. Forumulary. List of Chemicals. Glossary. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Creases on the back page. This manual superseders TM 2170-5 March 1 1939. Prepared under the direction of the Chief of the Air Corps. This manual serves as a reference to basic photographic principles and to the technique of military photography. It includes elementary photography chemistry sensitized materials optics filters photographic sensitometry ground camera photography negative making printing copying lantern slides color photography and laboratory operations. Operation and methods incident to the making of aerial photographs and aerial photographic products and their application to various purposes are described in TM 1-220. This is the standard of practice in place when the United States entered into World War II. The Air Corps was charged with the responsibility for performing all photographic and cinematographic work from aircraft. At stations where Air Corps troops predominated the Air Corps was responsible for performing the essential ground camera photography that was normally done for the War Department by the Signal Corps. A specially trained technician known as a photo officer was a member of the special staff of the commander of each unit having photographic responsibilities. The photo officer acts as an adviser to the commander on all technical and tactical applications of photography. War photography involves photographing armed conflict and its effects on people and places. Photographers who participate in this genre may find themselves placed in harm's way and are sometimes killed trying to get their pictures out of the war arena. The first official attempts at war photography were made by the British government at the start of the Crimean War. In March 1854 Gilbert Elliott was commissioned to photograph views of the Russian fortifications along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Roger Fenton was the first official war photographer and the first to attempt a systematic coverage of war for the benefit of the public. Like all soldiers Army photographers get trained on basic combat skills and learn how to operate weapons expertly engage in hand-to-hand combat and administer basic first-aid. Being an Army photographer requires dedication and resilience. United States, War Department paperback
