[Civil War – Confederacy] FH, Amanda F H
A Letter from Richmond Virginia September 1864 Concerning Textile and Flour Shortages
Richmond Virginia 1864. Single letter measuring 8 x 5 inches one double-sided sheet. Excellent condition. A letter written by “Cousin Amanda†of Richmond Virginia detailing the price and quality of cloth cotton spools and flour available to her late in the American Civil War. The Confederacy was under a blockade and Union forces were destroying anything deemed valuable to the Confederate cause including cotton fields and textile mills causing prices to skyrocket even for inferior goods. Amanda writes that moldy cloth was being sold for what today would be well over $200 per yard:

“At some of the Jews stores today I found yard wide purple calicoes at $12 damaged with yellow spots all over them. The merchants assured they would wash out and Sue Coulling who was with me thought so too but I do not. Not one of them would give me samples to try. . Cotton is from $4 to $5 for a spool.â€

Most shocking is the cost of flour; Amanda thanks her cousin for “letting us have†some flour “so cheap†as “It is $350 here and we certainly expected to pay that.†A little over a year earlier in April of 1863 an armed mob of women in Richmond had marched on the governor’s office in protest of the untenable cost of food storming and looting storehouses in what came to be known as the Richmond Bread Riot.

Of interest for those studying civilian life during the American Civil War and especially textile history. unknown

[Philadelphia – World War I – Draft Evasion] United States Government
Wanted Poster for Grover Cleveland Bergdoll Who Escaped from Prison After Dodging the Draft
United States 1920. Single 9 ¼ x 12 inch sheet. Some marginal damage else near fine. Offered here is a wanted poster for the “Flashy and dramatic†Grover Cleveland Bergdoll following his escape from a military prison in 1920. Bergdoll 1893–1966 was a wealthy Philadelphian socialite amateur racecar driver and Wright Brothers-trained aviator. In 1917 he failed to report for military service and disappeared from public life. After his capture in 1920—he was hiding inside the Bergdoll Mansion all along—he was stripped of his citizenship and remanded to Castle Williams on Governors Island in New York City.

Not long into his five-year sentence Bergdoll convinced military authorities to release him so that he could retrieve a stash of gold he claimed to have buried in Maryland. Back at his family’s mansion on the way to the supposed hoard he slipped his guards and fled to Canada and then Germany. Despite several foiled kidnapping attempts Bergdoll remained in Germany until 1939 when he returned to the United States—preceded by a wife and five children who arrived in the US in 1935 and pled for clemency for him. Though public opinion on the Great War had shifted Bergdoll was still reviled as a coward and a traitor. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. unknown

Jonathan Boucher (1738-1804), friend of George Washington, loyalist in the American War of Independence, clergyman and author [T
War of Independence; Washington Autograph Letter Signed 'Jonan. Boucher' from George Washington's friend Rev. Jonathan Boucher to T. Norton of Baston bearing Boucher's red wax seal.
29 March 1802; Epsom. 4to 3 pp. In a bifolium. 52 lines of neatly-written text. Clear and complete. Very good on lightly-aged and creased paper. Part of the second leaf has been cut away on the breaking open of the letter and is now under the seal with no loss of text. The seal is cracked with a light imprint of Boucher's monogram beneath a jester's head. The letter concerns the enclosure of the Langtoft Estate and 'Mr. Bankes' who 'never had any Legal Right to interfere in the Business'. Norton's last letter has made Boucher 'very uneasy' as he declines 'to have any more to do with my unfortunate Concerns in your Neighbourhood'. 'Whatever may have been the Case with You I have been too long blind but my Eyes have now been opened.' Declares himself pleased with 'Mr. Gee who appears to be a plain well-disposed honest Man: & notwithstanding Mrs. Banks's Insinuations to the Contrary I do assure You when I fairly put the Question He honestly said if He might chuse Mr. Norton was the Man whom above all others He should like & did wish to be my Agent.' Tells him not to 'send in your Accts. till the whole of the Buildings is compleated'. See Image. 29 March 1802; Epsom. unknown

[World War II] [France]
COMMENDATION FOR A WOMAN WHO ASSISTED THE FRENCH RESISTANCE
An undated letter from a leader in the French Resistance commending a French woman for her role assisting the opposition group during World War II. The typed text is in French and the translation reads: “I the undersigned Pierre Stibbe certify that Miss Charlotte Evrard has rendered the greatest services to the Resistance with complete devotion and incurred the greatest dangers.â€

The next typed line reads: “Pierre Stibbe delegate to the Consultive Assembly Member of the Steering Committee of ‘Those of the Resistance’ Director of ‘Volontes’ of the Resistance.â€

Evrard 1917-2011 does not appear in any obvious list of members of the French Resistance a network of groups that fought the Nazi occupation of France during the Second World War. According to newspaper reports she was a professional singer in France and moved to the Pasadena California in 1949. She worked as an attaché for the French Consulate in Los Angeles then for United Airlines travel services and later as North American representative for the Tahiti Tourist Development Board. Evrard’s last name changed in 1956 to Hyde following her marriage to J. Stuart Hyde 1890-1985 a British officer who emigrated to the United States in the 1940s.

The French Resistance was critical to the liberation of France. The members provided first-hand intelligence information and escape networks that helped Allied soldiers and airmen. It’s estimated that the proportion of French people who participated in organized resistance was one to three percent of the total population.

The letter is typed on stationary for the Assemblee Consultative Provisoire Republique Francaise. It measures approximately 5†x 6†and has been professionally matted and framed. Tears along the edges have been mended with non-archival tape that has browned. Not inspected outside the frame. unknown
