‎Captain Charles Edgar Gibson, of the 49th Regiment of Foot [Crimean War; Sebastopol]:‎

‎Crimean War; Sebastopol Two Autograph Letters Signed 'Charles Gibson' and 'Charles E. Gibson' as Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 49th written to 'Aunt Kate' from Sebastopol during the Crimean War including horse races during the armistice.‎

‎Letter One: 'Camp Sebastopol. January 24th. 1856.' Letter Two: 'Camp 49 Regt Sebastopol. March 31st.'. Letter One: 12mo 4 pp. Bifolium. 75 lines of text. Clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. Expresses regret at 'Morten Edens melancholy death so young & so clever as he was'. 'There is great talk of Peace. We hardly know if to believe it - few will be sorry should the news prove to be true as I think most of us have had enough fighting. Apparently refers to his sweetheart under a cypher. She has not written to him but 'London gaieties have little time for correspondence'. 'The weather here is something awful - cold & wet fogs & sleet. The place is a sea of mud up to your knees without exaggeration.' His father has sent him food and clothing. The officers are 'getting up a school for the men as the weather is too bad for drill' but 'there is no scarcity of work' with the roads requiring constant repair and 'the Minie Rifle Instruction' going on daily. 'There was a good deal of firing on Sunday night down by the Tchernaya - and we rather expected an attack however it all ended in Smoke.' The docks which he considers 'the most splendidly finished' he has ever seen 'built up of that beautiful red & blue granite' have 'all been blown up'. Letter Two: 12mo 4 pp. Bifolium. 67 lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair on aged paper with 6 cm vertical closed tear through both leaves. Containing an interesting description of 'Spring horse races' which took place 'in the Valley of the Tchernaya' as a result of an armistice. The allied armies crowded the banks on one side of the river and on the other 'the Russians let loose for the occasion'. There was much bartering - 'Knifes sic Pipes Tobacco Money and various other articles . thrown across the river attached to a stone or enveloped in mud. The river is not more than 2 or 3 yards wide at some places so that we could have plenty of conversation with our Enemies without breaking the "General order". The French were allowed by their Chiefs to cross and they appeared to get on capitally with the Russian Officers'. The French fired 101 guns in a general salute to the heir to their emperor and the British returned the salute with the same number. Regarding the outcome of 'the conferences' hears that 'you people in England are very pugilistic and are determined to have war if you can'. Considers that the British Army 'was never in better condition for a campaign' and thinks it 'a pitty to stop just now'. Gibson was still alive in 1864 when he married Georgina Eliza daughter of William Clarke. Note: "The 49th was at the battles of Alma Inkerman and Sevastopol during which three Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the Regiment." Letter One: 'Camp Sebastopol. January 24th. 1856.' Letter Two: 'Camp 49 Regt Sebastopol. March 31st.' hardcover‎

‎Washington D.C.: War Finance Division Treasury Department and Domestic Branch Office of War Information in cooperation with War Advertising Council 1944. Wraps. With slogans like "Let's Finish the Job" and "Here We go to Tokyo" the Sixth War Loan Drive was launched on November 20 1944 with a goal of raising $14 billion in bonds to support the U.S. war effort which was then shifting its focus: "By the time of the 6th War Loan Drive Germany will be either completely out of the war or so nearly out that people generally will be regarding the European phase as finished. But we still have a first-class war to deal with - the war with Japan. And it will be the task of promotion to explain to the American people that a big dangerous and expensive job lies ahead of us in getting men and equipment to the Pacific and whipping the tough brutal enemy who awaits us there."<br /> <br /> For limited distribution to the media and advertisers this booklet is filled with American propaganda including rough layouts of newspaper advertisements prepared by the War Advertising Council some of which feature racist caricatures of Japanese soldiers. There are also several excerpts from advertisements "which may suggest copy approaches." It concludes with an overview of the geography statistic problems and logistics of the Pacific War.<br /> <br /> Booklet 8" x 10 3/4": 16 p. including the wrappers. ‎Colonel G A Iakubovich [ G A Yakubovich; G A Iakubovitch ], Assistant Minister of War under Kerensky in the Provisional Russian‎

‎The Russian Revolution: the Assistant Minister of War addresses the Council of Peasants' Delegates. Account in English of a report by 'Colonel Iakubovitch' on the state of the Russian Army in a speech to the Council of Peasants' Delegates.‎

‎'Council of Peasants' Delegates Moscow . 24 May 1917. After the February Revolution and abdication of Tsar Nicholas II Kerensky as Minister of War was the dominant figure in the provisional government that held power until overthrown by the Bolsheviks in the October Revolution. According to Semion Lyandres 'The Fall of Tsarism' along with Lev Stepanovich Tugan-Baranovskii and G. N. Tumanov Captain G. A. Iakubovich 'belonged to the troika of Kerenskii's most trusted military aides during his tenure in the Provisional Government'. 4pp. foolscap 8vo. First page headed: 'Council of Peasants' Delegates. 24th. May 1917. Speech of the Under Minister for War. Colonel Iakubovitch'. Clearly an official British document and apparently unpublished. Carbon typescript on four leaves held together by a brass stud. Aged and creased with last leaf detached from rest. With two hurried manuscript notes in blue pencil difficult to decipher: the first at head of first page 'Circulate <by> 18/51 V'; the second at foot of last page: 'Return to Lt Reeves'. Divided into six sections under headings: 'To refuse to advance is to wreck the revolution' 'Technique foodstuffs and fodder' 'Disorder on the railways' 'Ranks of the army filled' 'Entrenched soldiers and entrenched officers' and 'The ranks of the army require filling up'. The first section begins: 'I have come here to explain what the Provisional Government understands by the word “advanceâ€. The Government has stated that it renounces all forms of annexation and contribution. But at the same time NOT TO ADVANCE IS TO WRECK THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION AND INJURE THE FREEDOM OF THE WHOLE WORLD. Our enemies place a very low value on the strength of the Russian army and are convinced that the army has dissolved and is no longer capable of advancing. At the War Ministry we have accurate information of the enemy's recent withrawals from our front. THEY HAVE WITHDRAWN NOT ONLY MEN BUT GUNS. And to what does all this lead. Once and for all you must realize that IF THE ALLIES ARE CRUSHED BY GERMANY THE LATTER WILL NOT FORGET TO SETTLE WITH US. How can we assist our Allies Only by advancing.' The report includes references to: 'disgraceful incidents' on the railway 'Soldiers have thrown station-masters and railway servants out of the windows of moving trains'; 'Desertion' 'a symptom apparent to all. I cannot now give you the exact figures but they run into several million'; 'soldiers who have dug themselves in at the rear'; 'soldiers who called up in 1914' who 'have not once been in the trenches'. It concludes: 'You see comrades what is now happening in the army. I will not attempt to prescribe a cure for this incredible complaint. Your wisdom will tell us what must be done and the Minister for War awaits the voice of the representatives of the free land – the voice of the peasantry. Storm of applause'. Signed in pencil on front cover 'G S Scovell Cam Hrs.' In top left-hand corner of map: 'No. 37'. In bottom left-hand corner: 'Compiled in Surveyor General's Office - Pretoria underdirection sic of MAJOR H. M. JACKSON R.E. Mch. 1901 From Transvaal Farm Surveys - Zululand portion from Map supplied by Surveyor General Natal'. In bottom right-hand corner: 'Photo-Lithographed - Pretoria - June 1901. Mapping Section - Field Intelligence Dept - Army Head Qrs.' E. Liebenberg in a paper titled 'The Cartographic Legacy of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902' describes the 'valuable work' done by Jackson until the cessation of hostilities when he became Surveyor-General of the Transvaal Colony. As he explains 'Major Jackson's Transvaal and Natal Series' of which the present item is a part was the second of three series the first being the 'Imperial Map of South Africa' and the third the 'Transvaal and Orange River Colony Degree Sheet Series its deficiencies the result of the hurry with which it was compiled: 'Major Jackson's Transvaal and Natal Series was initiated by Major H M Jackson head of the Topographical Section of the FID soon after Pretoria was occupied in June 1900. Also known as the First Transvaal Series this series consisted of 74 sheets of irregular size covering the whole of the Transvaal except the extreme north-eastern portion Naral Zululand and Swaziland and part of the former Bechuanaland. The maps were printed in monochrome on linen-backed paper and were like the Imperial Maps folded to pocket size for easy usage on horseback. Compiled in a hurry for urgent military use the maps are of a poor standard and it is uncertain whether they were of much use for military purposes. Although farm names and farm boundaries are shown the physical topography is merely sketched in and no altitudes are given. According to Jackson himself these maps were based on a mere 'patch-work' of farm diagrams and as such included much information that was of dubious value - if not positively misleading'. From the papers of Lieutenant-Colonel George Julian Selwyn Scovell of the 1st Cameron Highlanders for more information regarding whom see his obituary in The Times 29 April 1948 and his entry in Who Was Who. Scovell's diaries covering his period of service in the Boer War are offered separately. [ British Army ] Field Intelligence Department, Pretoria, 1901. ‎Sterling Heilig American journalist. Typed Letter Signed 'Sterling Heilig.' to Fleet Street journalist 'A. T. Q. C.' discussing his 'business of writing sensational letters to the American Sunday papers' and 'cribbing' plagiarism.‎

‎'40 rue Laffitte Paris September 29 1894.'. 1p 4to. On leaf of aged worn and creased cartridge paper. Addressed to 'A. T. Q. C. Care of The Editor of The Speaker 115 Fleet Street E.C. London.' An interesting letter touching on English and American journalistic practice 'sensational' copy plagiarism and fin-de-siècle Paris. The context is not entirely clear: one reading is that the recipient reported on or reproduced in the Fleet Street newspaper the Speaker one of Heilig's 'sensational letters to the American Sunday papers' only to have it 'cribbed' by Pearson's Weekly. Heilig begins: 'Dear Sir I was so amused to compare your own text with that of your robber's in a recent number of The Speaker enclosed. In the one case it was a stolen ruby or flute or piano or spade. In the present it is some stolen skeletons. My business of writing sensational letters to the American Sunday papers does not hold me to any crazy accuracy. The editors trust me they allow me to paint the lily.' He explains that 'In the Cabaret du Neant there are really no skeletons sitting about or at most one in miniature upon a shelf. I thought there ought to be skeletons sitting around so I put them in.' He explains that 'The "P. W. man" going towards the Montmartre hill in full Montmartre! saw these skeletons "lounging on benches" and some which stood about and snapped their jaws a frequent intervals.' He explains that another passage 'has no place in the patter of the show. I took it bodily from their first advertising sheet a journal called "La Mort".' He begins the final paragraph by explaining that he knows 'little of London and nothing of Pearson's Weekly' but that it has occurred to him that 'there may be something even yet more amusing behind their offers of twenty guineas etc.' He believes that 'one of the uses of these offers is to give the editors a screen behind which to protect themselves from even the appearance of evil. They can always say: "The thing was sent in to us. We regret it." Nevertheless I fancy the cribbing is done regularly in their own offices by paid clerks.'
