[Vietnam War Literature] Herr, Michael
Dispatches.

London:: Picador 1997. First Printing of the First UK Edition. A Fine tight unread copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Michael Herr went to Vietnam in 1967 virtually unknown as a writer but armed with press credentials for Esquire Magazine he quickly rose above the crowd of writers covering the war with his brilliant unorthodox prose. Herr's six extended pieces in this collection capture the war and its participants like no other writer except for Tim O'Brian in his equally masterful "The Things They Carried." Herr was one of the original Gonzo New Journalists in the company of such literary trail-cutters as Hunter S Thompson Tom Wolfe Truman Capote and Gay Talese. Herr when not imbedded on numerous marine and army operations spent many off hours in the company of three other flamboyant correspondents: Tim Page Dana Stone and Sean Flynn Errol Flynn's son. Photographer Page would survive his experience in Vietnam but in 1970 while traveling by motorcycle in Cambodia Flynn and Dana Stone on assignment for Time magazine and CBS News respectively were captured by communist guerrillas at a roadblock on Highway One. They were never heard from again and their remains have never been found. Herr found himself in as much danger as the soldiers he set out to document in a war that was more disillusioning than understandable. He was with the marines during the prolonged siege of Khe Sanh and most effectively captured the hallucinatory madness of the battle. "Dispatches" is as good as war writing gets; Herr puts the reader right where he is so that his experience becomes yours which is about as close as most people would ever want to get to the real thing.
Picador, hardcover

[Vietnam War Literature] Robbins, Christopher
The Ravens. The Men Who Flew in America's Secret War in Laos.

New York:: Crown 1987. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. The Ravens were American forward air-controllers who directed strikes from vulnerable low-flying spotter planes mainly in support of a Meo general named Vang Pao in Laos. "Advised" by the CIA this fierce warlord fought to keep the North Vietnamese out of the strategic Plain of Jars. Robbins Air America conveys the unique flavor of Raven-style combat and also explains how the diplomatic-military dynamics of the clandestine war in Laos fit into the overall American effort in Southeast Asia. The cast of characters is memorable: a swaggering rowdy bunch of mavericks whom their parent service the U.S. Air Force had great difficulty controlling they seemed to get by on sheer cussedness. According to the author they suffered the highest casualty rate of the Indochinese War. Robbins describes the poignant plight of displaced Meo/Hmong tribespeople who have settled uneasily in the United Statesincluding General Paoand their ongoing struggle to "propitiate the alien spirits of America." [Vietnam War] Shore II, USMC, Captain Moyers S
The Battle For Khe Sanh.

Washington DC:: U.S. Marine Corps 1969. First Printing of the First Edition. A Very Good Plus copy in illustrated wraps with a small chip missing from the backstrip. No hardcover edition was issued. This is the story of the defenders of Khe Sanh--and the epic 77-day struggle which not only denied the North Vietnamese Army a much needed victory but reaffirmed to the world the intention of the United States to hold the line in Southeast Asia. In addition to having been a contest of men and machines this was the test of a nation's will. As a history this work is not intended to prove any point but rather to record objectively the series of events which came to be called the Battle of Khe Sanh. These events spanned a period from April 1967 to April 1968. Uncommon.
U.S. Marine Corps, hardcover

The War Relocation Authority
Large Archive of Documents on Japanese Internment from the War Relocation Authority
Various Places: The War Relocation Authority 1956. A substantial archive of over 300 individual documents plus a few duplicates
relating to Japanese internment during WWII
forming a very thorough view of the federal agency that directed their imprisonment The War Relocation Authority. Such a sizeable collection of WRA documents is extremely rare in commerce.

All the major facets of the dark disturbing episode of Japanese internment are represented in this archive: its basic legal and historical outlines the WRA's publicity and propaganda and its reception
in the US the WRA's groundbreaking use of social sciences in service of repressive American policies life and death in the camps and the ending of internment.

The essential history of internment can be said to begin with Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9102 establishing the War Relocation Authority included in mimeograph format. Around that time and later an Index-Digest of Opinions by the Office of the Solicitor compiles legal opinions about
internment with commentary by regional attorneys.

Additionally included are many of the WRA's
quarterly and semi-annual reports as well as a
nearly 300-page contemporary history of the
agency by an unknown author untitled and likely written in late 1944.

The publicity campaigns of the agency are reflected in collections of the propaganda leaflets the WRA issued a near-complete run of the abstracts the WRA prepared on press coverage it faced mimeographed speeches presented by WRA head Dillon S. Myer and other agency figures and a file of documents relating to the WRA's investigation by
the House Committee on Un-American Activities
HUAC which would become famous under
Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s. The WRA's sensitivity to criticism is readily apparent especially in their robust reaction to HUAC's critiques.

One of the most controversial sections of the WRA the Community Analysis Section is heavily represented in this archive by near-complete runs of their Community Analysis and Project Analysis Reports. The Community Analysis Section was largely composed of social scientists primarily anthropologists who studied life in America's WWII concentration camps. Their aim was to aid Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration in running the camps with as little resistance as possible by applying lessons learned in the disciplines of Japan studies
and the human sciences. Although some
Community Analysts voiced objections within
restricted internal communications few brought
these objections before the American public.
Throughout the next six decades anthropologists psychologists and sociologists would become increasingly integral in US military operations and counterinsurgency campaigns leading to controversy with the revelation of their complicity in acts of torture by the American military in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Life and death in the camps is revealed in the previously mentioned reports of the Community Analysis Section as well as in detailed reports of Americans of Japanese ancestry who died in the camps and in military service Cumulative
Casualties by Center documents about Tule
Lake and a death there. The thoroughness of
these reports is undoubtedly of use to future
historians looking into various rebellions within
the camps and the repression which followed
as well as deaths of Nissei in WWII.
A smaller collection of documents outlines the
closing of the camps and attempts to transition
their residents back to normal life.

Most are stapled mimeographed documents; a
few are carbon copy typescriptsas indicated in
their descriptions. Very Good condition overall.
Around ten of the documents are ex-library
copies with their stamps and "discard" written on
them. Occasional holograph notations for
routing in the WRA bureaucracy. Some
documents marked "Confidential" and "Do Not
Publish." Manuscript annotations to some
leaves.

A remarkable collection of documents that
reveal not only what the WRA did but how its
bureaucrats perceived it and themselves. There
is a strange but quintessentially American
mixture of professionalism media savviness
cruelty optimism and racism for historians and
researchers to study here and hopefully for us
all to learn from.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. The War Relocation Authority unknown

All uncaptioned but with a contemporary envelope bearing a British military government stamp dated 18th July 1946 and reference "512 P DET" and additional manuscript tag "508 DET LÜBECK". Condition is very good indeed. An unusual group of photographs apparently originating from the British administration in Germany during the immediate post-war period depicting the experiences of refugees from the former eastern territories of Germany annexed by Poland and the Soviet Union following the end of the war displaced and now residing in Lübeck. The result of Germany's eastern border being redrawn was a mass influx of displaced persons predominantly into Schleswig-Holstein causing an economic and humanitarian crisis which formed one of the biggest difficulties faced by Germany during the early post-war period and which was brought to an end only by the Wirtschaftswunder economic miracle of the 1950s.

The present photographs form an important insight into the plight of those displaced predominantly depicting poignant moments of arrival and departure. [Original photographs]. unknown

Dunn, James Churchill
The War the Infantry Knew 1914-1919.A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium with The Second Battalion His Majesty's Twenty-Third Foot The Royal Welch Fusiliers: founded on personal records recollections and reflections assembled edited and partly

The First UK Printing published by P.S.King and Son Ltd in 1938.The BOOK is in near FINE condition. Original red cloth with gilt titling to the spine and the initials of the regiment gilt to the upper board.Covers are clean apart from a tiny black dot to the spine.Light pushing to the spine ends with a little fading and tiny splitting at the spine tips.A hint of toning to the text block.Free from inscriptionserasures and markings. The endpapers are only very slightly tanned.27 leaves of sketch-maps bound in at the rear. The very scarce First editionbeing one of just 500 copies privately produced by the author. As such this remains an extremely elusive title. The battalion included the authors of two of the most famous literary accounts of the Great War Graves and Sassoon with the latter contributing a chapter to the present work entitled "A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action" covering the period from March 12th to April 16th 1917 which is described as "An early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer." Graves offered to contribute but Dunn was not an admirer of Goodbye to all that and declined his offer. Graves is mentioned disparagingly a handful of times in the text. Dunn's is an extraordinary book in the Face of Battle John Keegan described it as "one of the most interesting and revealing books of its type a genuinely truthful and fascinating picture of the war as it was for the infantry." Compiled in diary form from the reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion it is without doubt the most authentic account of the experience of the Western Front at Battalion level. Collectible. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
P.S.King and Son Ltd hardcover
