Success to the Brave
London United Kingdom: Hutchinson 1983. Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Light blue boards. The spine is gilt-stamped. Map endpapers. 284pps. An excellent copy: clean tight square and bright. All tips are sharp. No reading wear; the textblock is immaculate. The dustjacket glossy in a mylar sleeve is flawless. The original price of 7.95 U.K. is intact on the front flap. SIGNED by the author -- without dedication or inscription -- on the title-page. ".In the spring of 1802 Richard Bolitho is summoned to the Admirality in London and given his orders for a difficult and to him distasteful task. Even an advanced promotion to vice-admiral to make him one of the youngest ever appointed does not compensate for his sudden and thankless mission. Bolitho and his wife are expecting their first child and for once he is loathe to quit the land for the demands of duty. The Peace of Amiens signed a few weeks earlier is already showing signs of strain as the old enemies wrangle over the return of colonial possessions won and lost during the war. In the little sixty-four-gun Achates Bolitho sails West for Boston and thence to the Caribbean where he must hand over the island of San Felipe to the French." Pfanz provides detailed tactical accounts of each stage of the fighting and explores the interactions between -- and decisions made by -- generals on both sides. He suggests that Union blunders nearly resulted in a victory for Confederate lieutenant general Richard S. Ewell on 2 July although defeat came the next morning at the hands of Union troops fighting behind breastworks at Culp's Hill. This book also explores the Confederate occupation of the town of Gettysburg the skirmishing in the south end of the town and in front of the hills and the small but decisive fight between Union cavalry and the Stonewall Brigade." Wilderness Empire : A Narrative
Boston: Little Brown & Company 1969. 1969. Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Bound in full brick-red cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in gilt. Quarto. Map-endpapers. xiv 653pps. Stated First Edition. An excellent collector's-quality copy: clean tight square and bright. All tips are sharp. The textblock is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket glossy in a new mylar sleeve is very mildly rubbed at the extremities; the original price 8.95 is intact. Volume 2 of 'The Winning of America' series. ".For over two hundred years no Indian force in America was so powerful and feared as the Iroquois League. But these Iroquois occupied and controlled a vast wilderness empire which beckoned like a precious gem to foreign powers. France and England secured toeholds and suddenly each was claiming as its own this land of the Iroquois. Alliance with the Indians was the key; whichever power controlled them could destroy the other. 'Wilderness Empire' is the gripping narrative of the eighteenth-century struggle of these two powers to win for themselves the allegiance of the Indians in a war for territorial dominance yet without letting these Indians know that the prize of the war would be this very Iroquois land. It is the story of English strength hamstrung by incredible incompetance of French power sapped by devastating corruption. It is the story of the English Indian and French individuals whose lives intertwine in the greatest territorial struggle in American history -- the French and Indian War."
