[KOREAN WAR LEAFLET - KIM IL-SUNG'S "POLICY OF LENIENCY"].
명령. Order. Life in the P.O.W. Camps.
North Korea.: Korean People's Army. Circa1950-1953. Black and white photographic illustrations. 8 x 10.5cm. Leaflet faintly foxed and trifle creased overall in very good condition. A propaganda leaflet issued by the North Korean regime for United Nations forces encouraging surrender and cooperation with the Korean People's Army and People's Volunteer Army.

The leaflet outlines Kim Il-sung's "policy of leniency" and assures that captured prisoners of war will be guaranteed "security of life retention of all personal belongings freedom from maltreatment or abuse and medical care if wounded or ill". Carefully staged photographs of POWs occupying themselves with recreation punctuate the leaflet implying an idyllic existence vastly improved over active warfare.

In truth the experiences of POWs was invariably harsh and unforgiving particularly during the winter. While sources confirm that the Chinese treatment of POWs was markedly better than the treatment afforded by the North Koreans there remain several POW accounts indicating a persistent implied threat of violence and a widespread disregard of the Geneva Convention. . [Americana] [Civil War]
DIARY AND LETTERS OF A UNION SOLDIER WITH VIVID DESCRIPTIONS OF ANTIETAM: "I never saw such a slaughter in so small a space
Handwritten journal pocket diary and letters written in 1862 by Freeman Foster Tilden recounting his experiences in several important American Civil War battles including the Second Battle of Bull Run and Antietam. A lifelong resident of Charleston Massachusetts Tilden 1837–1915 signed up in June 1862 for six months service with the 8th Independent Battery Massachusetts Light Artillery.

This archive includes Tilden’s 62-page handwritten journal of his wartime experiences a daily pocket notebook he kept throughout his service nine letters he wrote home during the war averaging four pages each as well as several dozen multi-page letters written to him during his service by members of his family. There are also three photographic albums containing 82 carte de visites and 54 cabinet cards of Tilden his family and friends. There are no images of Tilden in uniform; however there are several of his brother John in uniform.

Shortly after enlisting the train carrying Tilden and his unit derailed about a half-mile beyond Trenton New Jersey. He walked away with a few scratches and bruises despite being thrown into a canal along with several train cars.

His first encounter with the Confederate Army was at Rappahannock Station on August 23 1862. In his journal he wrote: “Pleasant. Being on police duty this day I was orderedto take some men with a team and hunt up some corn for our horses. While engaged in loading the team with corn at an old mill we were sent for and told to hurry back to camp soon as possible as the enemy had appeared on the opposite bank of the river and had driven in our cavalry pickets. We immediately placed our guns in position expecting an attack. We laid beside our guns all night to prevent the enemy from crossing the river but they did not attempt it. It was a very exciting day.â€

On August 27 Tilden was made acting sergeant of the 5th detachment and the next day found himself in command at the second Battle of Bull Run. He wrote on August 30: “Kept our position on the right till 3 o clock this afternoon when the rebels falling back we were ordered to advance. After we had proceeded about a mile we again came into position and sent skirmishes down through the woods in front of us but they were very quickly driven back and again the fight began with renewed vigor. We opened fire at ½ past 3pm and fired incessantly till ¼ to 6pm when having lost two batteries one on the right and one on the left we received orders to retreat and fell back with the rest of the army to Centreville. We were exposed to very heavy fire at the time we were in action.†During the retreat Tilden was forced to leave a caisson behind he lost his knap sack of clothing and his horse was struck in the leg with a shell.

On September 1 his unit left Centreville and were headed to Fairfax when they encountered Rebels along the road and the Battle of Chantilly commenced. “This was a very severe action lasting about two hours. The rebels fought desperate but we finally got the best of them. There was a great slaughter on both sides. Some of our regiments were very badly cut up in the woods by mistaking the Rebels for our men they being dressed in our uniforms.†After losing their commanders Brig. Gen. Isaac Stevens and Maj. Gen. Phillip Kearny the Union troops were ordered to retreat back to Washington D.C.

A few weeks later Tilden’s battery was again on the march. On September 14 he and his men were engaged in the Battle of South Mountain where they were ordered to take position with a high embankment on each side. He wrote they felt secure but then a masked battery of Rebels opened down with cannisters upon them and they were forced to abandon their guns and retreat. The 17th Michigan Regiment charged in and were ordered to take up the guns and the gunman who took up Tilden’s gun had his hand torn off. “Through some negligence or carelessness of someone our caissons battery wagon and forge were all pushed right up this road without any skirmishes or anybody ahead to see that the way was clear and the first we knew of any force in that direction was when they opened on us with cannister. It came very near losing the fight for our side as when we retreated from our guns it created a considerable excitement amongst the troops behind us and I shall always think that had it not been for the bravery of the 17th Mich. Reg. in charging on the enemy that particular time that we should not have gained the day.â€

After breaking camp on September 16 the Battle of Antietam – the deadliest one-day battle in American history – began. Shells flew dangerously close to where his battery was camped so they were ordered to take a position with two other batteries on a high hill opposite Sharpsburg and immediately began fighting. They were then ordered to cross Antietam Creek. “We were obliged to cross a stone bridge on which the Rebels brought their guns to bear. We crossed in safety although the water looked all alive with the shots and shells that were dropping into it.†As part of Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside's Ninth Corps they held the left position and were then ordered to recross the stone bridge and hold their position despite Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan telling them no reinforcements were coming. After a day of rain and little fighting he wrote they expected to resume the battle but learned the Rebels had retreated across the Potomac. “The dead and the wounded literally piled up on the top of the mountain I never saw such a slaughter in so small a space.â€

In a letter to his mother and father dated September 21 1862 Tilden shared his experiences. “I have seen some horrid sights I can tell you and I am in hopes I shall see no more. I am sick of war – you can have no idea of the horrors that follow such battles as have been fought the past week. The placed called Hagerston Heights where the battle was fought last Sunday was covered with dead and wounded. I never saw such slaughter. We have lost a considerable number…when we started we had 152 men now all we have fit for duty is 113 men.â€

Following Antietam his battery marched to Washington where they were received on September 30 by President Lincoln and ordered to fire a salute: “But old Abe did not wish us to fire he was afraid his horse might throw him off.â€

The journal contains 23 pages which are badly faded and difficult to read. However when digitally scanned and enhanced the writing is legible. In a scan of page 40 Tilden wrote on October 8 about the hardships he’d endured: “Our hard bread has been awful poor on the march it was just full of maggots and weevils. As we passed through the streets of Washington people remarked we were the hardest looking set of men they had ever seen. We were just black with the dust and sweat and our clothes were all played out…my feet were sticking through the soles of my boots most of the boys were completely barefoot.â€

According to a letter from his sister Charlotte Tilden’s brother John 1840-1906 enlisted in June 1862 with the 45th Regiment of Cadets Boston Company E. Tilden wrote his sister in September that he had advised his brother not to enlist “for I know it would not suit him but it seems he enlisted before I wrote to him.†In her letters Charlotte kept him apprised of who was going to war family matters and other current events. “Father says he thinks the war must end this winter if it is ever going to end†Charlotte wrote October 2 1862. “The President has issued a proclamation emancipation. What do you think about it Do you agree with Fatherâ€

Tilden’s father also named Freeman F. Tilden was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in Middlesex County in 1844. This archive includes a copy of a small campaign leaflet mounted on board and a directory of the representatives during his term. According to newspaper reports from the time Tilden was among the majority of state representatives who voted against a resolution upholding slavery.

In addition to family letters this archive includes several official documents concerning Tilden’s Civil War service. The collection also includes an eight-page handwritten account of an unknown person’s experience in the Civil War. It is dated June 13 1861 from Headquarters Camp Massachusetts; the individual apparently served with the 5th Regiment.

The materials in the collection are in very good condition and are organized and housed in manilla folders in a quarter size archival box. The spine of Tilden’s journal has nearly perished and the front board and a few preliminary pages are detached but still in very good condition. This important collection provides a human perspective and important insight on several pivotal battles during the American Civil War. unknown

FIRST EDITION BOUND FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS REPLETE WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AND MANY VERY FINELY COLOURED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN SILVER AND GOLD. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 which began with the Japanese naval attack on Port Arthur had repercussions throughout the world. Germany had helped to nudge both powers towards the war and had also managed to alienate both belligerents. She had used tremendous diplomatic pressure against the Japanese to force them to relinquish Port Arthur to the Chinese who then leased it to the Russians. Simultaneously the newly emerged nation of Japan was training its army officers in Germany. German involvement in the conflict led to war scares with both France and Great Britain causing Germany to quickly arrange an unwanted international conference at which they found themselves distrusted and isolated.
The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth arranged by U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt. The Russo-Japanese War won for the U.S. a place at the table of superpowers and a new respect in world diplomacy but for Germany it earned nothing but suspicion. In August 1905 the future chief of the general staff Helmuth von Moltke noted in his diary that "all the other nations are pretty well united in reviling Germany. They all assert that we are disturbing the peace."' Even Baron Friedrich von Holstein the chief architect of foreign policy from 1890 to 1906 admitted the bankruptcy of German diplomacy. "In short" he wrote to a friend "in the present atmosphere it seems to me that the correct and dignified thing to do would be to act like Russia after the Crimean War and calmly to withdraw into ourselves." [World War II]. [Connecticut]
Substantial Archive of Correspondence Between Private Walter Dianni and His Family and Friends Back Home in Connecticut
Various locations including New Haven Ct. 1946. Very good. Approximately 900 letters plus two photographs. Most letters with original envelopes. Light wear and soiling. A large archive of letters written from Private First Class Walter Dianni to his parents and his girlfriend during his military service in World War II together with their letters written to him. Walter Dianni was a New Haven native who entered the army shortly after his eighteenth birthday. Initially training at Camp Blanding in Florida he spent a short time in Fort Meade Maryland before shipping overseas to the Pacific theater in August 1945. He was at sea when Japan surrendered and wrote to his girlfriend Florence: "The day that we have all been waiting for has finally arrived and we feel so good inside for once in our lives. That day is of course the day the Japs surrendered and peace encompassed the earth once again. … When the news came to the ship we all gathered on deck there the chaplain led us in prayer and the singing of the anthem. Everyone really cheered when that was over." He was posted to Leyte in the Philippines from September 1945 to January 1946 before being transferred to Guam at the beginning of February. He spent the remainder of his time in the military there until September 1946. After his return to New Haven Walter enrolled at Yale and continued to date Florence. The two were married on June 24 1950; Walter graduated from Yale the following summer.

The archive consists of about 300 letters from Walter to his parents Pasquale and Rose DeVivo Dianni in New Haven; circa 180 letters from Walter to his girlfriend Florence Fappiano; about 150 letters from Mr. & Mrs. Dianni to their son; circa 170 letters from Florence to Walter; as well as a group of related letters Christmas cards and other ephemera from and to Walter from friends and family. Also included are a formal panoramic group photograph two copies taken at Camp Blanding Florida and an informal snap shot of Walter and a fellow soldier with palm trees in the background. Walter does not seem to have enjoyed his stint in the military. Writing from the Philippines in November 1945 he says "You may wonder why I'd rather be on some other island. I can't say from personal experience but many of the older men have been on others and they say Leyte is the worst place. The cities are poorest the people more illiterate and the living conditions the lousiest. The other islands sound wonderful. Even the shows there were first class. Hope I get a chance to see some other place." And in his final letter to Florence in August 1946 he writes "I know you haven't noticed a change in me through my letters. . I believe I'm more realistic than I ever was for one thing. These months in the service have made me more stupid if that's possible. I could go on indefinitely but why tear myself down. There's little improvement that I can say. After you've seen me let me know the verdict." Most letters are several pages long relaying news of family and home as well as military routines and bits of Walter's travels. His final few missives describe the convoluted process of mustering out and traveling home from Guam. Of particular interest of course is that both sides of the correspondence are present here providing a full picture of Walter's relationship with his parents and Florence during this formative time in his life. Worthy of research. unknown

Nine Years' War
Verdades Incontrastables que Declaran los Designios sic y los Motivos del Proceder de la Francia; Respuesta de un Catolico Aleman a un Amigo sobre los Negocios Presentes en Europa
Cologne 1689. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Small quarto. 24 pp. In later plain wrappers. Title in manuscript on the front wrapper; light to moderate foxing/age-toning throughout but generally a nice copy.

Political pamphlet on French policies translated from German for Spanish-speakers. Excellent reportage of what was happening where and who was involved in these early days of Louis XVI's expansionist policies leading to the Nine Years' War. Institutionally rare. Between the two editions that were issued in 1689 there are only 7 institutions reporting ownership according to OCLC--Harvard is the only institution in the U.S. Palau VII p. 152 for another edition printed in Barcelona 1688 sic by Hernando Ferrer. The first edition of Palau appears to be in error as to the date; OCLC identifies that edition as having been printed in 1689. unknown
