[Civil War – Union Army] Unknown Artist
Portrait of a Young Union Army Soldier
United States N.d. Overpainted albumen photograph measuring approximately 6 ¾ x 8 ½ inches mounted on heavy cardstock. Slight marginal wear; excellent to Near Fine. An overpainted albumen photograph portrait of an unknown Union Army soldier who appears to be quite young dressed in Union fatigues. Though boys under 18 were not supposed to be able to enlist many did so anyway with some estimating that around 200000 underage boys joined the Union Army all told.1 Despite General Order 73 which ordered that “no discharges will be granted to volunteers . on the grounds of minority†so many families tried to get their underaged sons back from the Army that the New York Times called it an “epidemicâ€2. Nonetheless the brave child drummer boy or soldier became an iconic image of the Union cause.1

1 Frances M. [World War II – Germany – Nazism] Bliwernitz, Annemarie
Looking Back. A World War II Memoir by Annemarie Bliwernitz
St. Petersburg Florida: unpublished 1974. Ninety-four typed and photocopied pages measuring 8 ½ x 11 inches in a soft binding. Binding with wear; pages generally excellent to Near Fine. Overall excellent to Near Fine. Annemarie Bliwernitz 1905–2005 née Entz was born in Notzendorf East Prussia. In 1952 after surviving both World Wars she and her husband Bruno 1900–1992 immigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. Offered here is Annemarie’s unpublished memoir written between 1972 and 1974.

Bliwernitz grew up in a wealthy land-owning country family which she remembers lived far west enough that they did not have to flee the Russians during World War I and was less affected by the postwar economic situation than were city residents. Most of the memoir is taken up by Bliwernitz’s remembrances of World War II and life leading up to it. Of Hitler’s rise she writes:

“During these years conditions got worse in Germany . A new name came up ‘Adolf Hitler.’ – It was not hard for him to find followers now by the thousands and soon by the millions. He dared to stand up against the Communists with his brown uniformed S.A. men and a new wind seemed to blow over our illfated land. No wonder young people looked up to him and followed the new star nobody had much to lose. . Bruno and brother-in-law Willy after some meetings attended showed up in the new brown uniform also and farmers and laborers seemed to be united in that new idea. – It really changed Germany in a short time nobody could deny that unemployment ceased people got jobs again and housewives and mothers could buy the necessities of life for their families especially food. And it brought us to our feet again also.â€

Though of course Bliwernitz maintains that the “Concentration Camps and what happened in them was not known to the German people" she mentions that Bruno quickly became an Arbeitsdienstführer—essentially a labor camp overseer—and remembers dissenters being disappeared:

“As an example I will tell about Bruno’s oldest brother Alfred. He was all against Hitler from the beginning. One day he came home and picked up his neighbor’s paper at his frontdoor and wrote his ideas about Hitler and his lies down with pencil. This neighbor reported him they picked him up and that was the last his family saw of him. They were told ½ year later that he had died in Stuhm West Prussia a Concentration Camp. No explanation to his wife whatsoever. The same destiny happened to my co-worker a highly educated person at the Translation Office. She said in the lavatory where many ladies could hear: Hitler’s big picture in the office should be placed here in the toilet-rooms where it belongs. One of the ‘kind’ co-workers reported her and she came next day only to pick up her belongings and was not seen any more.â€

While Bruno is sent to the Eastern Front Bliwernitz and their children flee the Russians trying to reach the Americans on the Western Front. Along the way they encounter deserting German soldiers and near Hamburg liberated camp inmates:

“Shooting started close to us and we heard bombs exploding would we be hit We found out that the Concentration Camp near us had been opened and those freed inmates had shot their guardians. At daybreak we met the first one still in his black and white striped prison-suit kneeling on the ground by the chicken-coop and with his both hands feeding himself out of the bowl with the chicken food. . They came to us begging for a little bit of salt to cook the horse-meat they had cut out of the dead horses lying along the ditches . We talked to them and I remember one told me he was imprisoned because of his religion not to go to any war. He was from Elbing where I had gone to school as a young girl.â€

The family are reunited with Bruno and shortly before they surrender to the Americans they destroy the evidence of their party involvement: “Bruno’s N.S.D.A.P. membership-card my certificate for the ‘mother’s cross’ the passports of Horst and Juergen showing that they had been students of the Nazi-school in Stuhm etc.†After the German surrender the family is sent back east where they struggle to avoid starvation then return west where they are sent to live in Hardegsen. They finally decide in 1951 to emigrate as life in postwar Germany is simply too difficult but make the mistake of being honest about their history:

“Another big obstacle for us was that Bruno had been in a member in a Nazi-party though not an active one. But it was still a handicap in those days for any undertaking. We had not kept it secret in our immigration papers and they wanted a detailed description about our political involvement. That we did wrote a long letter in German didn’t have the money for an interpreter and never got an answer. . That was a bitter pill to swallow.â€

After this they decide to try for Canada instead and this time savvily “didn’t mention any Nazi-party attachmentâ€. This is a success; the family moves to Winnipeg and eventually to St. Petersburg Florida where the narrative was written. Bliwernitz recalls working as a housekeeper which she contrasts with her previous life in which she and her family would not allow maids farm hands or tradesmen to eat at their table with them.

Of interest to historians of the German civilian experience during the Second World War especially that of women and children. unpublished unknown

[Revolutionary War – Britain – Finance – Jamaica Coffee House] Sharpe, Nathaniel
1776 Letter from One Englishman to Another Asking for Financial Advice Given the “Fluctuating situation of Publick affairsâ€
Knaresborough England 1776. Single three page letter measuring 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Normal wear; Near Fine. A letter from Nathaniel Sharpe in Knaresborough to Edmund Green a merchant in London addressed to Green at the Jamaica Coffee House. This café the first of its kind in London was established in the mid-17th century; in 17th and 18th century Britain coffee houses were popular meeting places particularly for conducting business. Sharpe writes to Green:

“Your Esteem’d favour of the 22d is before me and the picture you have drawn of the situation of publick affairs are truly very alarming and have no doubt but the Representation is a very just and real one. . But to the following Fact place yourself in my situation and give me your Candid opinion Wether I am safe in letting £2200 lay any longer or whether I ought to call it in and place it out on a Security in this Country.â€

He describes his investments and states that:

“I have not one shilling in Trade since 1760 and in Decemr. 1762 Retir’d to this place and found myself in possession of a Happiness that I could ill brook to part with. And which I would wish to preserve. Should this sum be in no danger I can live as usual.â€

The American Revolutionary War had a significant impact on the British economy; at the time Sharpe was writing although the conflict had been ongoing for some time the war itself was in its early days and uncertainty was high.

Other than asking for financial advice Sharpe tells Green that Green’s “Brother Tommy had . taken a Cup of Liquor rather too freely and had been drawn into Cards†alarming their mother who had requested that Sharpe inform Green about the event; asks Green to visit her; and sends his good wishes to a mutual friend. unknown

Los Libros del Lince . Nuevo.

Philippines. World War II. Anunciacion Fortunato
Archive of Documents Concerning the American Army Service of Fortunato Anunciacion in the Philippines During World War II
Bamban and other locations in the Philippines 1971. Fair. Thirty typed or mimeographed documents totaling thirty-four pages. Old folds creasing and fraying. Noticeable wear and chipping to edges with occasional loss to content along the bottom margins. A fascinating collection of documents relating to the military service of a Filipino soldier serving with the United States Army during the Second World War. Fortunato V. Anunciacion was born in Angeles Pampanga the Philippines on February 27 1915. As early as 1935 Anunciacion was working with the United States Army as a corporal in the guerilla forces as a scout and also in a medical regiment as a dental technician. He was made captain in 1942 and thereafter served as the commanding officer of the Bamban Battalion of "Bruce's Guerillas" working with the American Army during the Japanese occupation of the islands during the Second World War. Following the war in 1946 Anunciacion worked briefly as a "Philippine Scout" for the U.S. Army.

The documents present here pertain mostly to Anunciacion's time with Bruce's Guerillas or the aftermath of his service and include letters discussing his appointments roster lists of Anunciacion's commands documents relating to the service of Bruce's Guerillas copies of discharge documents affidavits from Anunciacion and other soldiers regarding his military service letters concerning his pension and more. Since he was a commanding officer many of the documents were signed by Anunciacion. One of the documents from 1945 describes some of Anunciacion's guerilla activities which included "obtaining information regarding Jap activities" and capturing a Japanese spy and then killing him when he refused to give his name. Another document from 1945 a tactical roster of riflemen in the Bamban guerillas filled out and signed by Anunciacion his remarks at the end provide a glimpse into his personality: "The above are bona fide officers and enlisted men of Company 'C' Squadron 101 Bamban Bn unattached and unrecognized but operated independently side by side with different American Divisions in mopping up operation against the Japanese at Bamban area province of Tarlac during the liberation. This unit performed intelligence and sabotage work in the same area during the whole period of the Japanese occupation." The later documents provide information on Anunciacion's efforts to seek back pay Social Security and disability benefits as a "recognized guerilla" and further background on Anunciacion's service through a couple of testimonials by his junior officers. The collection is rounded out by an official copy of his discharge certificate and Anunciacion's membership certificate into the Luzon Guerilla Forces Veterans Association based in Manila. unknown

[Mexico]. [War of Independence]
Amor Lealtad y Union del Esquadron Urbano de México en la Jura de la Constitucion
Mexico City: Por Don Manuel Antonio Valdes Impresor de Cámara de S.M. 1812. About very good. 20pp. plus engraved plate. Small quarto. Disbound. Minor dampstaining light toning. A brief but grandiose celebration of and pledge of loyalty to the new Spanish Constitution of 1812 offered by the garrison of Mexico City. The new form of government was in great part an attempt to assuage colonial discontent and among other things promised colonies representation in the Spanish Cortes. The author riffs on the garrison's motto of "Amor Lealtad y Union" and offers several verses in praise of each as well as one for the nation. An engraving of the coat of arms also bearing the motto is tipped in between the title page and first leaf of text. An interesting representation of reaction to the promulgation of the new constitution in Mexico. OCLC lists three copies in U.S. institutions at Yale Berkeley and the University of Texas. Old mailing folds minor foxing and wear small hole in second leaf of two letters from removed wax seals. An informative trio of manuscript letters sent by Thomas Spencer and William W. Bliss from New York City to Aristarchus Champion in Rochester. Aristarchus Champion 1784-1871 was a Yale graduate in 1807 and spent a long career as a lawyer real estate speculator and philanthropist. He was involved in business dealings with both of his correspondents here and the letters detail some of those activities. The letter by Thomas Spencer is dated April 10 1849 and concerns business dealings relating to both Mexican claims and New York real estate. Spencer writes in detail about a farm he attempted to sell "for the Mexican claims but could not make it go." He also discusses further speculation in Mexican claims in a long paragraph on the second page throwing out numbers like $50000 and $90000 as proposed totals for various deals before returning to further detailed discussion on the prospects of selling his farm. The remaining two letters are written to Champion by William M. Bliss a business associate of Champion's. In his first letter here written in January 1849 Bliss writes about the state of bonds potential liens and other financial matters relating to his company's business interests with regard to a new "road to Lake Erie" and Binghamton. Bliss's second letter is entirely concerned with the potential purchase of several paintings including a "landscape on the Delaware River" by Walter Mason Oddie and a "scene in Gray's elegy" by an English emigrant artist who has become "an adopted citizen" of the United States. Bliss notes several prices in the process of discussing these various paintings. These letters concern a wide range of business dealings in New York in the mid-19th century including Mexican claims and current art prices providing a solid opportunity for studying contemporary real estate and art markets. unknown
