They were beaten off by the Portuguese with British assistance thus reinforcing Portuguese distrust of their Castilian neighbors and their close ties with Great Britain. <br>    <br>    Palau 307020. Winfield Scott detailing the actions of his brigade during the battle of Cerro Gordo 18 April 1847. Cerro Gordo was situated astride a mountain pass en route to Mexico City and was a natural position from which to block the American advance from Vera Cruz. Pillow's command was charged with creating a diversion in front of the Mexican line of entrenchments defended by artillery and infantry armed with muskets as the bulk of Scott's army swung around the Mexican flank and rear. ‎Washington: Gales & Seaton pr. 1834. 8vo. 30 pp. <br><br>Hardiman Owens was => an intruder on the Creek Nation's land in Alabama. Soldiers were sent to remove him; a confrontation occurred and Owens was killed by a bullet from a soldier's musket. The soldier was indicted for willful murder and other soldiers were indicted for lesser crimes. => The legal wrangling over jurisdiction was tangled.
