Much of the news in this edition comes from the recently vanquished South especially from Virginia: a front page story reports on Gen. Sherman's march with his troops back to Alexandria and another recounts the arrival of the Sixth Corps in Danville. There is also a report from Richmond with the headline: "The People Respect the Power of the United States." Other unfolding news regards the plotting of the Lincoln assassins and a story on a filibuster movement against Mexico. unknown books‎

Gorham Coffin and one from Murel Dufaeux on the treatment of Coffin and his men imprisoned in Bologne. Coffin was evidently detained by the Commissioner of Police and was anxious to secure both his release and better treatment for his men. He writes regarding the efforts of the American consul on his behalf and about his eagerness to return to Dunkerque. A vivid Civil War broadside showing the immediacy of the news from the front as well as how garbled or false information was disseminated. The headlines further trumpet: "It is occupied by the 144th Pa. Vols. - The 'Old Flag' that Anderson was compelled to lower floating on the ruins! - Glorious news from Gens. Meade and Butler! - Contemplated movement on Richmond." Despite resumption of a terrific bombardment of Fort Sumter on October 26 the fort did not fall to Federal forces. Thousands of rounds were dropped on the fort but it stayed in Confederate hands another sixteen months until evacuated on February 13 1865. It certainly was not occupied by the 144th Pennsylvania Volunteers and Major Anderson's "Old Flag" did not fly over the fort until two hours before the death of Abraham Lincoln on April 15 1865. The whole second column of text concerns events in the Western Theater Georgia Tennessee and Alabama and the progress of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia: <br> <br> ".General Meade was on the march for the city of Richmond under circumstances which rendered it almost certain that he would capture it. ‎Janesville Wi. 1862. Broadside 8 1/2 x 6 inches. Light wear and foxing. Very good. An unrecorded Civil War broadside publicizing a dispatch from Union Gen. George B. McClellan following The Seven Days' Battles which occurred between June 26 and July 2 1862. In the course of that week Union and Confederate forces fought a series of battles in five different locales. At the end of these engagements the Confederates withdrew to Richmond. This EXTRA provides information about losses and casualties and states: "Gen. McClellan and his big staff all agree that the position of our army is far more advantageous as a base of operations against Richmond than that hitherto occupied." Although most of the battles in the Seven Days can be considered Union victories the overall outcome of the campaign was still not particularly successful for the Union due to McClellan's weaknesses as a commander in the field. Afterwards the Union's Peninsular Campaign was abandoned and the majority of McClellan's men were transferred to John Pope's army in Northern Virginia. unknown books‎

The SPRINGBOK was originially seized by the United States because it was carrying "contraband of war." The subsequent legal struggles for compensation and discussions of the legality of such a move are discussed in these documents. The PETERHOFF also was transporting contraband and had false papers and the British government refused to "find ground to interefere." Some loss repaired in silk from chipping at gutter and from worming in several leaves the latter affecting some text but not exceeding 1 x 1 inch in area. Closed tears in final leaf repaired with very early paper on verso. Light staining and foxing. Overall very good. The original Spanish translation of an important invective against Louis XIII during the first phase of France's involvement in the Thirty Years' War. At the time of this publication in 1626 France had actively begun to support the Protestant side in the conflict concerned with the political threat of the Hapsburg states that surrounded it on three sides in Spain and Spanish-controlled Flanders to the south and north and the Holy Roman Empire in Germany to the East. In 1624 Cardinal Richelieu was appointed to the Royal Council of Louis XIII and immediately began to institute a vigorous anti-Hapsburg policy. The following year France joined England in subsidizing the efforts of Christian IV of Denmark to defend Lower Saxony against the Holy Roman Empire beginning an involvement in the war that would eventually lead to its own military participation against its fellow Catholic powers. <br> <br> The present document is a long and detailed warning to Louis XIII against pursuing a course of actions that would pit France against the rest of the Catholic world. According to the document itself the text was first composed in French and subsequently translated into Latin and thence into Castilian Spanish. It immediately occasioned a number of responses and refutations and its anonymous authorship soon became the subject of a 200-year-long debate. In his exhaustive and authoritative bibliography on the Jesuits BIBLIOTHÈQUE DE LA COMPAGNIE DE JÉSUS Augustin de Backer seems to have put the question of authorship to rest attributing it to the German Jesuit Jacob Keller. Keller 1568-1631 was a German scholar and controversialist widely regarded as a genius and best known for a counter- Calvinist tract on Tyrannicide and a celebrated defense of the Papacy in a debate with Lutheran theologian Jacob Heilbrunner. Backer lists both the French and Latin versions of the EXHORTATION. and refers to a German translation but he omits any mention of the present Spanish version. He also describes the document as having been printed in Italy which may result from confusion regarding the city name of Augusta. While Augusta Syracuse was under anti- French Spanish control in 1626 and may thus be a candidate for the printing location all other signs and context point to Trier "Augusta Treverorum" in Latin including the publisher's imprint which calls Augusta an "imperial city" and declares permission for publication from the Holy Roman Emperor. <br> <br> An extremely interesting and rare document anticipating the violent wars between France and the rest of Catholic Europe of the following decade and offering a view of the French-Hapsburg rivalry from the Austro- German Hapsburg perspective and translated for the Spanish Hapsburg audience. One copy is held at the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana Benjamín Carrión in Quito; OCLC lists one additional copy at the New York Public Library. Small bit of discoloration on second page. Very good. Message of Maine governor H.J. Anderson and a general order from Alfred Redington Commander in Chief of the Maine militia calling volunteers to arms in the Mexican- American War. Anderson explains that "the repeated and long continued efforts of the National Government to effect an amicable settlement of the differences with the government of Mexico have unfortunately proved unavailing" resulting in the American declaration of war. Anderson notes that the President has requested one regiment of infantry from Maine and writes that he has no doubt "that the patriotic citizens of this State will promptly respond to the call of the general government for aid in defending any portion of its territory." Redington's general order lists the positions in the infantry volunteer corps being assembled and transmits instructions for volunteers. "Maine although distant from the scene of the conflict will be as prompt as any of her sister States in repelling the forces of the invader. Her patriotic citizens will be as ready to vindicate rights upon the Rio Grande as upon their own immediate territory. A rare copy of an important order issued by Gen. Winfield Scott just days after his victory at the Battle of Chapultepec and his taking of Mexico City. Chapultepec was the final victory in Scott's march to the Mexican capital following victories at Cerro Gordo Contreras Churubusco and Molino del Rey. Largely outnumbered against Santa Anna's forces Scott produced a series of stunning victories leading to his capture of Mexico City and the issuance of this broadside which seeks to establish order by proclaiming martial law in the capital. <br> <br> A preamble to the General Orders announces that this is a restatement "with important additions" of Scott's order of Feb. 19 1847 issued from Tampico which also declared martial law. In the present order meant to maintain order in the newly conquered city Scott lays out the prohibitions for a wide variety of acts including assassination murder poisoning rape assault robbery theft the desecration of churches and cemeteries and more. Significantly he announces that such rules will apply equally to Americans as to Mexicans. He points out that these laws are important not only to guide his army but "for the protection of the unoffending inhabitants and their property about the theatres of military operations against injuries on the part of the army contrary to the laws of war." Scott further extends martial law to any part of Mexico under the control of U.S. forces. Lastly he announces that the American army will safeguard all of the churches monasteries convents inhabitants and property in Mexico City and announces a "contribution" of $150000 to be imposed on the capital to pay for these services payable in four equal installments. <br> <br> The order is signed in manuscript at the end by Winfield Scott's Assistant Adjutant General H.L. Scott. Garrett locates the copy at the University of Texas at Arlington and OCLC adds copies at the California State Library Sutro copy and the University of North Carolina. GARRETT p.390. ‎World War I Treaties Austria: Treaty of Saint Germain‎

‎CONDITIONS OF PEACE WITH AUSTRIA caption title printed in English French and Italian‎

‎N.p. but likely Paris 1919. Four versions of the text separately paginated and grouped together printed in English French and Italian two versions. Folio. Gathered signatures loosely inserted into printed wrappers as issued the four sections laid into a general printed wrapper. Moderate edge wear. Near fine. Germany's great ally in World War I was the Austro-Hungarian empire which in 1919 was broken apart and made into the separate states of Austria and Hungary birthing as well several other nations in Eastern Europe. The new state of Austria signed the Treaty of Saint Germain making peace with the victorious Allies on September 10 1919. Present here are preliminary printings in English French and Italian actually two Italian versions of that treaty indicated as such by the printed words "proof" "epreuves" and "bozza" on the respective treaties. The articles three versions of the treaty are not numbered sequentially but rather are numbered discreetly within parts and the pagination is not continuous between the parts. The second Italian version present here however does number the articles a total of 371 and the pages a total of 177 continuously though there is no printed date for the signing of the treaty indicating that it is also a preliminary proof printing though made later than the other three. Several of the most important parts of the treaty - those dealing with financial reparations for example - are blank here indicating that these proof versions were printed before those matters were completely settled. <br> <br> The conclusion of the Great War split apart the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the Treaty of Saint-Germain the newly-created state of Austria recognized the independence of Hungary Czechoslovakia Poland and Yugoslavia and also had to cede much land to Italy and Bukovina to Romania. Austria also had to agree never to compromise its independence and was therefore forbidden from entering into any alliance with Germany. Austria was also forced to admit its complicity with Germany in waging the war and was saddled with reparations payments. Austria's army was limited to 30000 and other articles of the treaty addressed political and economic issues. The text of the treaty also contained the League of Nations Covenant and therefore was never ratified by the United States Senate. <br> <br> A very rare and interesting version of an important treaty ending the First World War here in a very small printing likely made only for participants in the peace conference. unknown books‎

Photographs are captioned in Japanese and include images of Japanese soldiers involved in actions all over the Philippines as well as a grateful populace. One image shows Japanese soldiers handing out treats to Filipino children.
