Krems Austria 1945. 4to and smaller. Some toning overall very good. 4to and smaller. STALAG 17B. Identity documents and ephemera of American Air Force tail gunner Sgt. Gerald McDowell 1923-2002. McDowell and the flight crew of the B17 nicknamed Hell's Belle survived being shot down over Germany in 1943 and were interned at Stalag 17B in Austria. At the war's end the camp guards marched American prisoners west to meet the U.S. Armored Division at Braunau and avoid the Soviet troops occupying eastern Austria. McDowell wrote a memoir of his war experiences A Tail Gunner's Tale 1991. Stalag 17 gained notoriety from the 1953 Hollywood film of the same name staring William Holden.<br/><br/>Comprising:<br/><br/>1. This compelling historical manuscript was penned during the contentious and hostile political environment that was pervasive during the Lincoln Administration. The subscription is for a speech by Pendleton arguing the constitutionality of the proposed "Legal Tender Act" authorizing the government to issue paper money popularly known as "greenbacks" that were not backed by an equal value in gold or silver to help finance the war. Despite intense opposition the act was passed in February 1862 and laid the foundation for a permanent paper currency. <br/><br/>Notable signatures on the subscription of which 10700 copies were ordered at 50 cents apiece Pendleton ordered 2000 include rabid "Copperhead" and hated Southern sympathizer Clement Vallandigham who was famously tried and convicted of treason in 1863 and subsequently banished to the Confederacy; Kentuckian John Crittenden author of the unsuccessful "Crittenden Compromise" of 1860; and the speech's author George Pendleton leader of the peace wing of the Democratic Party who ran for Vice President on the failed McClellan-Pendleton ticket that ran against Lincoln during the presidential election of 1864. <br/><br/>The manuscript is signed by Republicans Democrats and members of the Unconditional Unionist Party and includes: William H. Printed on board the USS George Washington a German ocean liner seized by the US and converted to a troop transport during WWI The Hatchet a reference to the legend about George Washington and the cherry tree was started in February 1918 to as a diversion for the troops and sailors on board who were making the dangerous Trans-Atlantic crossing. A bend of shipboard gossip and news received via the ship's radio the single-sheet paper was written by officers with literary experience and printed by on a small hand-press by men who had worked in the printing and publishing business. With a print run of 7000 the paper whose motto was "We Cannot Tell a Lie" boasted that it had "The Largest Circulation on the Atlantic Ocean." <br/><br/>Our collection was presented by the ship's chaplain who also doubled as the newspaper's managing editor to banjo player Joe Lorraine. Lorraine was one of the professional semi-professional and amateur players of the American Stage and Lyceum in WWI that followed the American Army through the war and entertained the troops often in areas close to the frontline. Lorraine entertained more than 2000000 soldiers in 650 appearances over 5 months before being invalided for mustard gas exposure and sent home to recuperate. He returned in 1919 with his famous autographed bull neck banjo which had been signed by more than 700 soldiers from most of the major battles of the war. A pen and ink inscription at the head and tail of Vol. 6 No. 1 reads: "Presented to me by the Chaplain of the George Washington Property of Joe Lorraine. These papers were presented on the transport steamer George Washington during the war with Germany. President Woodrow Wilson sailed to and returned from France on this boat.". unknown books
