Most of these newspapers no longer exist - but the club persists. "The club has seen many well-known faces in its history. Carl Wilhelm Wolfgang Ostwald (1883-1943) was a German chemist and biologist famous for his research on colloids. He was born in Riga, the son of the 1909 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Wilhelm Ostwald. 'In the early 20th century, before enzymology was well understood, colloids were thought to be the key to the operation of enzymes; i.e., the addition of small quantities of an enzyme to a quantity of water would, in some fashion yet to be specified, subtly alter the properties of the water so that it would break down the enzyme's specific substrate.' It was proposed that life itself was explainable in terms of the aggregate properties of all the colloidal substances that make up an organism. As more detailed knowledge of biology and biochemistry developed, the colloidal theory was replaced by the macromolecular theory.' Anthony's mother, Frances, visited in the 1820's, and published a book about the trip in 1832. Anthony visited four times. His substantial trip in 1861 was the basis for this 1862 best seller. Anthony's comments on political matters during this contentious Civil War time were insightful and frank. Neither he nor his mother were beloved in the U.S. for many years. PAIMP 23

NOTE: Early embossed ownership of Montgomery Cunningham Meigs (1816-1892) a career U.S. Army officer and civil engineer, who served as Quartermaster General of the Union Army during and after the American Civil War. Despite his Southern birth, Meigs strongly opposed secession and remained loyal to the Union; his record as Quartermaster General was regarded as outstanding, both in effectiveness and in ethical probity, and Secretary of State William H. Seward viewed it as a key factor in the Union victory. The ownership stamp highlights his favorite pre-war engineering project - the Washington Aqueduct (1852-1860). He supervised the construction of the monumental Union Arch Bridge across Cabin John Creek, designed by Alfred Rives, which for 50 years remained the longest single-span masonry arch in the world. It also mentions his service (1853-1859) supervising the building of the wings and dome of the United States Capitol. A remarkable record of 19th Century American invention and ingenuity, in an example associated with one of the most important figures of the Civil War era. BOX 66 Basement

Lightly foxed. **Early manuscript ownership of Chapman Biddle on first fly leaf. Chapman Biddle (1822-1880) was a member of the prominent Biddle family of Philadelphia. He served as an officer in the Union Army in the Civil War. He was Colonel of the 121st PA Regiment. The unit served at the Battle of Fredericksburg alongside the PA Reserves, losing 149 casualties in an attack on the Confederate right flank. Biddle participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville in the Third Division of I Corps. Biddle assumed command of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division before the Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863. The assignment of Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds as commander of the army's left wing led to acting promotion of brigade commander Brig. Gen. Thomas A. Rowley to command of the division while Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday led the corps. Colonel Biddle led the four regiments of the brigade in the first day's fighting on McPherson's Ridge and the subsequent withdrawal to Cemetery Ridge. His report on the first day's fighting describes the brigade's fighting as taking place under heavy artillery fire. When the brigade was flanked by Confederate infantry, Biddle led an unsuccessful counterattack. Later he received a head wound from a spent Minie ball when Col. Abner Perrin's brigade attacked the brigade's fall-back position on Seminary Ridge. Biddle had his head bandaged, and then returned to his troops. Returning to his regiment on July 2, after Rowley resumed brigade command, Biddle participated in the repulse of Pickett's Charge. By the end of the battle, only 84 of 263 soldiers were left in the ranks. Biddle played no role in the court-martial of General Rowley for being drunk on the field at Gettysburg. In fact, he never referred to Rowley's role in the battle in anything he wrote during or after the war. Biddle led the 121st Pennsylvania though most of the summer and autumn of 1863, including most of the Bristoe Campaign and the Mine Run Campaign, before being discharged on December 10, 1863. His head wound, received at Gettysburg, eventually led to Biddle's departure from active service. "On April 12, 1864, some 3,000 rebels under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest overran Fort Pillow, a former Confederate stronghold situated on a bluff on the Tennessee bank of the Mississippi, some 40 miles north of Memphis. The garrison consisted of about 600 Union soldiers, roughly evenly divided between runaway slaves-turned-artillerists from nearby Tennessee communities and white Southern Unionist cavalry mostly from East Tennessee. Under a flag of truce which his men violated by creeping up on the fort, Forrest demanded the garrison's surrender, threatening that if it refused he would not be responsible for the actions of his men. Believing Forrest was bluffing, Bradford refused, whereupon the Confederates swarmed over the parapet. The overwhelmed garrison fled down the bluff to the river, where they were caught in a deadly crossfire. Forrest's men continued to shoot well after the Federals had thrown down their weapons, and many men were killed in hospital tents or as they begged for mercy. By the next morning only about 65 blacks had survived a massacre that had continued intermittently through the night. More than seventy percent of the white survivors would perish in rebel prisons. The Confederates lost about 18 killed. Northern Radicals seized on the massacre to inflame a wavering Northern public. Though Forrest initially described the river as "dyed with the blood of the slaughtered for 200 yards," and his field commander bragged that his men had taught "the mongrel garrison" a memorable lesson, Forrest and his staff later either denied there was a massacre or blamed it on the garrison itself." - From Black Past W21 / YORK HS
