[Boer War]. COOKE, Harry Ernest
An interesting eight-page letter from 96 Trooper Henry Ernest Cooke Victorian Mounted Rifles Maitland Camp Cape Town 22 June 1900 complete with the original OAS cover
Very Good. Octavo 8 pages two bifolia. The letter is creased where folded for posting; in excellent condition. The cover has a Cape of Good Hope 1d stamp with a partial and indistinct postmark; the verso is postmarked Melbourne 30 July 1900 and Hawthorn on the same day. The cover is chipped and torn with minor loss to the rear flap. The letter comes 'From No. 96 VMR on active Service South Africa' and is addressed to his cousin Miss E. Kirwood Eva in Glenferrie Victoria. After he deals at length with the squabbles over the fate of some stamps he had sent he explains in even greater detail what occurred to him after he 'got the Fever' at Kroonstad. He was in hospital for a fortnight in Bloemfontein where he 'lived on five pints of condensed milk & water & 5 ozs of brandy a day & I got pretty thin & weak on that'. He was then sent to a convalescent hospital at Wynberg. 'I was glad to leave Bloemfontein for men were dying fast every day & the hospital I was in was overlooking the cemetary & one could never look at the place but what he could see a lot of niggers digging graves as fast as ever they could . Eva I was not affraid to die by a bullet from a rifle but to lay there & die from that miserable fever I dreaded the thought of it'. Wynburg was 'a grand place only 22 of us to a ward & on spring beds & everything kept quiet & clean as a new pin'. He is then sent to Maitland Camp and 'what a difference . it was 120 of us laying on the floor as thick as it was possible for us to lay All Australians & New Zealanders in one room & there was no one in charge & it was nothing but one constant din . I couldn't stand it at all'. Conditions improved then worsened; he was told he was going home then not; he was put on what the doctor 'calls "Light Duties" . he won't send us back to the Regiment but we have to go fooling round this camp'. A dozen of them had to put stones around the paths at the camp then they had to paint them white 'Oh by jove "Talk about a fancy Ball" . I am beginning to think I am a poor fighting cock now'. The last two pages contain a lot of these sorts of ruminations. Murray page 315 687 Private Harry Ernest Cooke in 'The Second Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse Victorian Units'. unknown

In 1939 Herman Guest the publisher's son had some of these original Klerksdorp printings bound up and issued with a new foreword telling the story of the production of his father's 'records of the campaign in the Western Transvaal and elsewhere. 'The operations against the Boers in the neighbourhood of Klerksdorp which were begun on Sunday night March 23rd 1902 were very cleverly conceived and executed. The object of the operations was to form a long line of mounted men with the left on the Lichtenburg blockhouse and its right on the Vaal River and to work against the line of blockhouses' opening paragraph. Guest's account of this epic drive against De la Rey the Boers' commander in the Western Transvaal during which the troops made a round trip of 80 miles in 24 hours was written and printed in Klerksdorp soon after the event. Tall octavo 253 × 160 mm 4 pages a bifolium. Some marginal creases; two puncture marks near the top left-hand corner; a very good copy. The position of prime minister in New Zealand was known as premier until 1907. Robert Seddon 1845-1906 was premier from 1893; he died in office. He 'attracted much publicity for his outspokenness about the South African war: he visited South Africa in 1902 at General Kitchener's invitation. He was increasingly ready to arouse and exploit popular nationalism' 'Dictionary of New Zealand Biography'. The speech was 'Delivered at a Dinner given in his honour by the Public Bodies of Johannesburg during his recent visit' en route to the 1902 Colonial Conference in London held on the occasion of the coronation of Edward VII. The conference opened on 30 June 1902. [Boer War]. METHUEN, Lieutenant General Lord
Klipdrift. Capture of Lord Methuen drop title
Klerksdorp: Printed and Published by H.M. Guest 1902. Very Good. Klerksdorp Printed and Published by H.M. Guest 1902. Octavo 225 × 137 mm 8 pages; the last five pages reprint 'Lord Methuen's Official Despatch . Klerksdorp 13th March 1902'. One large sheet issued folded and uncut now opened a little inexpertly with minor marginal loss to one top edge; outer hinge split for most of its length; small puncture in the top left-hand corner; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. 'In the Battle of Tweebosch or De Klipdrift on 7 March 1902 a Boer commando led by Koos de la Rey defeated a British column under the command of Lieutenant General Lord Methuen during the final months of the Second Boer War. De la Rey ambushed Methuen's column at Tweebosch on the Little Harts River. The British force numbered 1250 including nearly 1000 mounted men and four guns. Methuen's force was largely made up of green troops; these panicked and fled or surrendered. Only the British regulars in the column fought stubbornly in the combat which lasted from dawn until 9:30 am. The British lost 200 killed and wounded plus 600 men and all four guns captured. After being wounded twice and suffering a broken leg when his horse fell on him Methuen was captured. De la Rey sent the wounded Methuen to a British hospital in his own carriage under a flag of truce' Wikipedia. The hospital was in Klerksdorp where Herbert Guest the enterprising local 'Printer and Publisher Bookseller Stationer etc.' was based; we presume the publication and the initial three-page account of the battle and its aftermath are his work. The last paragraph of that section was written after 'the declaration of peace' 31 May 1902. In 1939 Herman Guest the publisher's son had some of these original Klerksdorp printings bound up and issued with a new foreword telling the story of the production of his father's 'records of the campaign in the Western Transvaal and elsewhere. [SPANISH CIVIL WAR] COMINTERN
International Press Correspondence aka INPRECOR; aka World News and Views. Collection of 249 Issues 1934-1939
London: H.R.G. Jefferson et al 1934-1939. NOTE: Other identified publishers all London include: Unthanks Bookshop; R. Bishop; William Massey. Beginning in July 1938 title changes to "World News and Views."

Collection of two hundred forty-nine quarto issues in original staple-bound self-wrappers. Each issue 27cm x 21cm; most issues ca 20pp numbered sequentially. General wear occasional creasing or small losses; some copies marked as "File Copies;" some with red pencil annotations presumably for publication; a few issues with ink pressure stamp of the Los Angeles Workers Library. With the exception of a few issues in 1934 the journal was printed on high-quality newsprint; the run is well-preserved Very Good overall and fully readable.

The periodical was issued irregularly from one to as many as three issues per week; our run collates as follows:

Vol. 14 1934: 28-14161719-232629-3234-3638-4043-455760-63 32 issues
Vol. 15 1935: 1-58-3136383944474850555658596163646668-72 49 issues
Vol. 16 1936: 1246-3032-384042-58 53 issues
Vol. 17 1937: 248-242642444547-5355-57 47 issues
Vol. 18 1938: 1-35-81012-2325273031333436-4044-47525456-60 38 issues
Vol. 19 1939: 2-91415181920-2628-3235-4155 30 issues. Beginning in 1918 immediately following the Russian Revolution International Press Correspondence usually called by its acronym INPRECOR became the Communist International's principal international organ for distributing "official" news of the global spread of Marxist ideology. The paper was issued in four languages English French Spanish and German and at its height no fewer than one and as many as three issues per week appeared. The chief audience was the editorial staffs of COMINTERN-aligned newspapers where many of INPRECOR's articles would be republished verbatim. Thus INPRECOR served as a de facto press service for the left-wing media in Europe North and Latin America.

In our experience cohesive runs of INPRECOR in any size are unusual; this collection represents a veritable treasure-trove of official COMINTERN policy during the Popular Front period especially valuable for its day-by-day coverage and interpretation of events in Spain before during and after the Civil War and for documenting the rise of fascism across the European continent. Our run ends in August 1939 on the eve of Germany's invasion of Poland and the outbreak of the Second World War. Between that date and 1934 despite occasional lacunae the issues offered here provide a clear and compelling narrative of the sweep of world events leading to the World War and an intimate view of the communist left's response to those events.

Even individual issues are somewhat scarce in commerce. Earlier issues of INPRECOR have been digitized by the Marxist Internet Archive ending in 1934. Much of the run is available in microfiche produced by the Communist Party of Great Britain but the imaging is of legendarily poor quality basically illegible in many places. Holdings for physical issues are spotty per WorldCat with many institutions holding small samples or partial runs. H.R.G. Jefferson [et al] unknown

[Prisoner of War]. DALTON, VX37705 Warrant Officer Class 2 Royce John
Six snapshots sent by Beryl Dalton his wife to VX37705 WO2 Royce John Dalton 2/24th Infantry Battalion in 1943 and 1944 while he was a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany
Six gelatin silver photographs five approximately 90 × 60 mm one 65 × 45 mm with the recipient's name prison address and a lengthy message from Mrs Beryl Dalton in ink on the verso of each one; in excellent condition with a 'Stalag VIIIA . Geprüft checked' inkstamp on each verso. Four photographs were sent to Italy and two to Germany. Judging by the dates on the messages between 23 January 1943 and 25 May 1944 and the addresses of the prisons only one snapshot was sent at a time possibly no more were permitted. In Italy 'Australians who were not officers were held in Campo 57 at Gruppignano near Udine in north-east Italy. The camp was commanded by Colonel Vittorio Calcaterra described by one prisoner as "a sadist and a beast and an accessory to murder"' Australian War Memorial. This is where WO2 Dalton was held. After Italy surrendered in September 1943 he was taken to Stalag VIIIA in Görlitz Germany. His capture probably occurred during the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. Each snapshot features Royce John Dalton's young son John Royce Dalton who appears to have been born after his father left for the Middle East in November 1940. One poignant message reads 'Dear Royce This is our son John Royce isn't he grand .'. Others contain similar sentiments such as 'This is our son taken on his big engine on 20.12.43 which we gave him for Xmas'; and 'Mother & Pop idolize John but I don't let them spoil him. John's a happy child .'. 6 items. unknown

KOREAN WAR
Statements by Two American Air Force Officers
Beijing: Foreign Languages Press 1952. First edition first printing scarce in commerce of this propaganda pamphlet issued a few months before the publication of the controversial "Needham Report" an exposé of American biological warfare in Korea which drew on the explosive testimonies of Enoch Quinn and other POWs. Issued as a supplement to the magazine People's China in May 1952 this pamphlet contains the full confessions of Enoch and Quinn a broadcast by Quinn letters from Enoch to his family and to the Chinese 'volunteer' forces in Korea and a state newspaper editorial warning that "the day of judgement of the American war criminals is near" p. 15. Highly influential at the time the statements of Enoch Quinn and others were subsequently recanted following their release. Their experiences in captivity are now considered an early example of "brainwashing" a term coined in 1950 by Edward Hunter to describe Chinese communist interrogation techniques. Large octavo pamphlet pp. 16. With 2 photographic half-tones 2 facsimiles of handwritten statements and diagrams in text. Wire-stitched as issued front cover lettered in black. Creasing throughout where sometime folded horizontally pages browned light soiling to covers some splitting at spine. Still a very good copy of this exceedingly delicate publication. unknown

[FIRST GULF WAR] Anonymous Photographer
Three original large-format black-and-white photographs of a Manhattan anti-war rally ca. 1990
N.p.; photographer unknown ca 1990. Three large-format black-and-white photographic prints 11" x 14"; very mild creasing at edges still Near Fine.

Three anonymous but excellent images of a Gulf War-era demonstration probably in Manhattan ca. 1990. The photographer is unidentified but the prints are of professional quality and capture close-up scenes of crowds carrying banners and placards opposing military involvement in the Middle East and directly attacking President George H.W. Bush. One placard calls for Bush's impeachment accusing him of ".creating the Gulf War to Cover Up His High Crimes and Misdemeanors;" another appears to read "Liar Liar We Will Set Your Ass on Fire."

Several images suggest a New York likely Manhattan locale: one poster connects the marcher to SUNY Old Westbury on Long Island; several placards bear the imprint of the National Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East including a New York City phone number.

Though the precise date is obviously uncertain the event captured here is plausibly the October 20 1990 nationwide protest against Operation Desert Storm; rallies took place in several cities simultaneously but New York's was by far the largest as some 15000 protesters gathered at Columbus Circle and marched to Times Square. In general opposition to the first Gulf War was rather muted but significant demostrations did take place in October 1990 and January 1991 as well as a less well-attended counter-protest on the day of the Desert Storm victory parade June 8th 1991. unknown

Isle Nostre Dame Paris chez Michel Mettaier imprimeur ordinaire du Roy 1648. . First edition; 4to 22 x 17.5cm; 3 folding plates each approx. 35 x 26 cm 2 engraved portraits woodcut initials and decorations throughout the text engraved armorial book-stamp to last leaf verso displaying motto 'light in darKines lumiere dans les tenebres'; one integral blank leaf title page stained and browned some marginal staining and browning throughout creasing to corners one small wormhole affecting 4 leaves; side-stitched contemporary marbled wrappers worn and soiled with extensive loss to upper wrapper; 14 39 1pp.
A curious and rare anonymous English Civil War pamphlet published in Paris by Michel Mettaier sometimes spelt Mettayer in 1648 following the capture of Charles I by parliamentarian forces the previous year.

The first part of the work consists of three large folding plates depicting the House of Lords the House of Commons and the Convocation of Canterbury with explicatory notes explaining the history and function of these bodies in the English parliamentary system. The latter part of the book contains an original address to Henrietta Maria Queen of England illustrated with facing engraved portraits of the Queen and the Prince of Wales and signed simply 'le bon et loyal svbiet'. It introduces a short statement in both English and French allegedly translated from an original Latin version which purports to be the words of Liudolf c.930-957 an Ottonian Duke of Swabia and grandson of the German king Henry the Fowler 919-936. The text claims that Liudolf did not die in 957 but rather feigned his death to take exile in Mantua in the hope that his descendants would one day regain his power and prestige. The tale was likely intended by the royalist author to offer hope to the exiled queen and her son who were soon to become widow and orphan to the executed king.

Rare. We can trace only 5 copies in institutional collections worldwide: 3 in the UK British Library Durham University and the University of Leeds and 2 in France BnF and Bibliotheque Saint-Genevieve.
Isle Nostre Dame, Paris, chez Michel Mettaier, imprimeur ordinaire du Roy, 1648. unknown

A series of four postcard-format gelatin silver photographs of 3705 Private William Forrest Dixon of the 4th Pioneer Battalion
Very Good. Backing cards generally slightly tanned; a couple of tiny indentations; overall in excellent condition. Two of the portraits are dated France July 1917 and London October 1918; one of the others is credited to an English photographer; the fourth one was almost certainly taken while Dixon was on active service. They give a graphic portrayal of the impact the war has had on him. This is reinforced by the lengthy message of 26 July 1917 written on one verso; it commences 'Just a Photo to let you see I am still alive & ducking. We are out for a spell once again getting ready for another stunt I guess'. 4 items. unknown
