With letterpress text providing military and geographical information.<br /><br />The war in Crimea took place in 1854-1855 and saw the Russian Imperial army oppose the allied troops of France Britain and the Ottoman Empire in a series of battles that culminated in the famous siege of Sebastopol Sevastopol in the winter of 1854 and the subsequent defeat of the Russian Army. The historical event has been immortalised in the work of several artists and writers such as Leo Tolstoy who served in the war and later wrote Sevastopol Sketches three short stories based on his first hand experience of the Siege.<br /> Bruges, Buffa & Cie, 30 Novembre 1854. unknown

August 1855. . Manuscript map in watercolour and ink on linen 41 x 54 cm framed. Some spotting.<br /> Manuscript plan on linen of the siege of Sebastopol: a fine and unusual map drawn by Sergeant Neubourg according to the instructions of Captain Koch of the French First Foreign Infantry Regiment. It shows the location of the allied troops on the banks of the Chernaya River near the city of Sebastopol which was besieged by the allies from September 1854 until the end of August 1855. The capture of the Redan Redoubt one of two key strong-points in the defences of Sebastopol by French troops including the Legion prompted the Russian evacuation and surrender of the city in August 1855 after an eleven month siege. This was the final episode in the Crimean War which ended officially in February 1856. Despite being heavily involved in the fighting more legionnaires succumbed to the deprivations of camp life notably the bitter cold than died in battle.<br /> August, 1855. unknown

James and 6 numbered plates on 5 folding sheets of stronger paper; repeated lithographic title title table of contents 638 pp. 1 l.; vii including title 273 pp. 1 l.; atlas of 16 plates on 12 folding sheets of stronger paper one on thiner -- in all 22 plates plates lithographed by H. James under the direction of Cameron numbered I-XX with XVIa and including a rarer 'Sheet III' on thiner paper some with outline hand-colour; light spotting to text maps with occasional soiling some folds with short tears. Contemporary red cloth covers with blind-stamped panel decoration flat spines lettered in gilt; spines rubbed and faded with shelfmark labels to foot slipcase strengthened.<br /> First edition of this large work: a very good copy complete with the 3 volumes of text and all maps plans and views of Sevastopol - despite the slipcase label showing a somewhat inattentive collation by the H.M. Stationery Office stating "Note.-This Volume is incomplete no perfect copies are available for issue."<br />Sir Elphinstone 1829-90 was born in Livonia now Latvia and was awarded the Victoria Cross in June 1855 for fearless conduct during the Crimean War. At the final assault on Sebastopol on 8 September he was wounded by a splinter on the left side of the head and lost an eye. Selwyn Jepson 1899-1989 intelligence office author playwright and broadcaster. During WWII he served with Special Operations Executive as a recruiting officer for Independent F Section headed by Buckmaster. He was responsible in particular for the recruitment of many of SOE's women agents preferring them to men in working alone behind enemy lines. The Far House was built by Jepson not far from Stodham House which became SOE training establishment STS3. Brian Sewell 1931-2015 noted art critic and son of composer Peter Warlock. A Scrap Album large 4to. 22 leaves started c.1904 and ending c.1909 with many chromolithographed scraps greeting cards calendars pasted to both sides of the album leaves more especially with 32 scraps relating to the Boer War of which 4 show Red Cross nurses stretch-bearers a doctor and an ambulance and one other a wounded soldier slightly damaged. Four of the remaining Boer War scraps are slightly damaged most with a soldier having lost his head. Of the unrelated material most is in good condition the album is dilapidated with some leaves loose.

Light wear and toning to extremities a few old folds smoothed-out with several tiny nicks and small edge tears a few tiny splits at intersection of folds and a small loss toward lower margin just above the lettering; an unrestored Very Good example unbacked. <br /> <br /> The first in a series of four propaganda posters produced by Gráficas Reunidas for the Liga Nacional de Mutilados e Inválidos de Guerra LNMIG the National League of War Wounded and Invalids founded in Madrid in 1937. "The creation of this association was the first tangible outcome of the organizational efforts made by wounded Republican veterans. According to their provisional programme their key concern was to remain 'useful' útiles to the war effort and provide 'unconditional help to the government'. It was stated that the association should 'educate and re-educate the disabled veterans in physical and cultural terms. As a consequence of the efforts made by the LNMIG on behalf of disabled veterans the government gave preference to the war wounded to fill vacant menial jobs such as janitors messengers and the like" cf.Matthews James. Spain at War: Society Culture and Mobilization 1936-44. The poster created by an anonymous artist depicts a wounded soldier supporting himself with a crutch being embraced by a typist above text reading "Wounded soldier take my place!" translation mine.
