(CIVIL WAR; PHOTOGRAPHY)
Oval Albumen Photograph of Sgt. Thomas R. Orwig.
Philadelphia : C. Cohill Artist 1862. Oval Albumen Photograph of Sgt. Thomas R. Orwig. Philadelphia: C. Cohill Artist 1862. The photograph measures 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches. On photographer's printed mount measuring 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Glazed and in the original carved wooden frame. Some nicks to frame and photograph a bit faded but a striking image.Orwig received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Lewisburg Bucknell University in 1862 and then joined the Union army rising to the rank of sergeant. He died later that year in a naval hospital in Washington D.C. He was a member of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. At the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 the unit fought first on McPherson's Ridge and then on Seminary Ridge before being driven back to Cemetery Hill. Orwig missed that fight as he had already died.Charles Cohill wass originally a farily well know portrait painter who studied under John Nagle. But after around 1860 Cohill began listing his occupation as “artist†instead of “portrait painter.†Photography had come onto the scene. Cohill opened his studio on the popular Chestnut Street. He advertised himself as selling both “ambrotypes and photographs the best in the world.†C. Cohill, Artist unknown

[Civil War] Edwards, John E
The Confederate Soldier; Being a Memorial Sketch of George N. and Bushrod W. Harris Privates in the Confederate Army
New York: Blelock & Co 1868. Hard Cover. near Very Good binding. 12mo. vi 139 1 pp. First edition. As issued in publisher's cloth. Binding has some wear to the spine ends and corners and is slightly sunned at the spine; a few places on the rear board where the cloth is rippled; contents generally toned with occasional and scattered soiling; one leaf with minor loss to the bottom corner affecting the margin only. While this copy has it's minor condition issues it is rarely found in better condition. Generally it is as nice a copy as is typically found of this scarce book. This copy with the contemporary ownership marking of Confederate veteran from Georgia Elisha Thurmond and dated 1869.

Harwell writes "Robertson in Civil War Books describes this as 'an overly sentimental tribute' but there is a time for sentiment and such a time came to the Reverend Edwards when he was called upon to write about twin brothers one who died at Centreville Virginia June 30 1861 and the other who died on the battlefield of Fair Oaks June 30 1862" In Tall Cotton 51. [Civil War] Willett, Elbert D | edited by Joseph J Willett
History of Company B Originally Pickens Planters 40th Alabama Regiment Confederate States Army 1862 to 1865
Anniston AL: Norwood 1902. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. 2 89. 1 pp. First edition. In original cloth with title in gilt on the front cover. Binding is worn at the head of the spine with small loss to cloth; likewise the bottom corner of the front board is worn; binding is generally darkened and somewhat soiled; a solid copy with light to moderate foxing/toning to the contents. Despite its faults this is a better copy than one usually sees. Laid in is a tattered reproduction of: "Pages from History & The Men from Pickens County Who Wore the Gray" compiled by Mrs. T. R. Spell Jr. with a short history of Pickens County veterans in attendance at past U.C.V. events the roll of Company B and a list of those killed and wounded from J. H. Pepper's diary about the Battle of Vicksburg

The diary was largely taken directly from Captain Elbert D. Willett's daybook while in the war. His son Joseph Jackson Willett edited this book and remarks on its merits in a short preface: "It is not expected or contended this book will shed any additional light on that momentous struggle known as the War between the States about which so many volumes have been written . . . . but that diary now well thumb worn which faithfully records the movements engagements and casualties of Company B and the 40th Alabama Regiment C.S.A. Willett's notes have the advantage however of being written at the same time yes on the same day the narrated facts occurred. No matter how long the march or how fierce the battle the author of the diary on each day recorded the doings of Company B." An interesting contemporary account which given the immediacy with which events were recorded probably does "shed additional light" contrary to J. J. Willett's suggestion to the contrary. The final 5 pages are taken from the diary of J. H. Curry. Additionally several pages of rosters are included. Rare in commerce. Howes W-437 "aa"; Dornbusch II AL-76; Wright W-685. Norwood unknown

[Civil War] Early, Jubal Anderson and William Mahone
A Correspondence between Generals Early and Mahone in Regard to a Military Memoir of the Latter
Lynchburg VA 1881. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Octavo. 19 1 pp. Backed in morocco with corners. Binding is quite sharp without appreciable wear; the pamphlet self is worn soiled foxed but is much better presented in this Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding.

A series of correspondence between the two generals related to John Watts De Peyster's biography 1871 of Mahone and Mahone's military record. A glimpse into the prevailing friction of the post-war South. From the library of notable Civil War and Americana collector Charles Sanders Jr with his bookplate on the rear pastedown. A difficult pamphlet to find. Dornbusch notes it was published in 1871 while Nicholson identifies the date as 1881. While Dornbusch was very thorough it is likely his suggested date is based on the date of Peyster's biography. We feel more confident in Nicholson's assessment coupled with Sanders' own note on the rear pastedown corroborating Nicholson. Nicholson p. 262; Dornbusch II 2705. unknown

Seldom seen in commerce only 4 institutions report ownership according to OCLC. [Civil War] Featherston, John C
The Work of the 48th Regiment Pennsylvania V.V.I. at Petersburg Mine and which Resulted in the Great Battle of the Crater. cover title Battle of the Crater
1906. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 30 2 pp. frontis illus. First edition. As issued stapled in printed wrappers. Wrappers are toned; some minor soiling to one page opening; vertical creases from the pamphlet having been folded; only traces of foxing.

An interesting address delivered in Pennsylvania by a former Confederate officer who was present at the Crater. There are surprisingly few Confederates who were eyewitnesses at the Battle of the Crater that wrote about it. A reasonably nice copy of a surprisingly uncommon pamphlet Featherston was captain of Company F 9th Alabama Infantry. This address was delivered at the M. E. Church in Pottsville PA on Wednesday April 18 1906. Two engravings include the frontispiece of the soldiers at the Petersburg mine and depiction of the monument to the 48th at Petersburg on the recto of the last leaf. Laid in but not issued with the pamphlet is tri-fold reproduction of Michler's map of the entrenched lines in the immediate front of Petersburg stamped: "O.D.S.S. Co Petersburg May 24 1906." This copy presented to Mr. Charles A. Black of Petersburg VA by the Survivors Association 48th Regt. Quite rare with only Dornbusch citing it in the standard references. It is cited in Haynes but a search of the Library of Virginia's catalog shows that it is no longer held by the Library. In fact only the Huntington is reporting ownership according to OCLC. Dornbusch I PA-166; Haynes 5950. unknown

KOREAN WAR CHINESE PROPAGANDA MIRROR
美術照相兩用鏡 Meishu zhaoxiang liangyong jing. Art Photograph Dual-Use Mirror.
Shanghai.: 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Shanghai jinggongye di'er lianyingsuo. Circa1940s - 1950s. Mirror with attached coloured image on paper under glass on reverse 10.5 x 15cm metal handle 15.5 x 17.5cm. Mirror a little stained and clouded at edges image browned at edges hanger rusty but still very functional. An interesting piece of 1950s propaganda. This portable travel mirror is a useful and decorative example of the sort of mass produced consumer items made in the early 1950s in small local workshops that were organised into collectives. Travel mirrors could be hung up or propped up for use by a moveable handle. On the reverse is a colour socialist-realist illustration of a red flag-draped locomotive a symbol of modern progress patriotism and peace. The colourful image of the train with its 天平商标 logo could be displayed when not in use or replaced with a photo with the mirror behind it.

In 1952 when China built its first domestically designed locomotive it was called the "Peace" series which we see written on the front of this engine with the image of a dove. China's involvement in the Korean War to 'resist US aggression and assist Korea' depended on strong logistical supply lines to the front. Trains therefore became symbolic of national unity strength and China's ability to protect regional peace. Many such travel mirrors were bought as gifts and given as morale boosting items to the Chinese troops who could insert family photographs under glass on the backs of their travel mirrors. . 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. [World War I] Fussell, Paul
The Great War and Modern Memory.

New York::: Oxford University Press 1989. First Printing of the First Reprint Edition. A Near Fine copy with owner name on flyleaf in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. This is one of seminal books examining the shattering effects of the First World War on the English soldiers that took part in the slaughter fields of France. Fussell traces the changes in attitudes and the shattered idealism that marked the Lost Generation forever following the armistice. The effects of the carnage inflicted by the war changed the attitudes of the writers involved and created a new more "modern" artistic temperment and forced new images of violence into their language and art which infused the collective consciousness of their generation and those that followed.
Oxford University Press,, hardcover

[Vietnam War Literature] O'Brien, Tim
The Things They Carried.
Boston:: Houghton Mifflin 1990. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. While this collection of stories involving a single platoon in Vietnam is referred to as a work of fiction it is difficult to determine where the line between fact and imagination begins and ends. "The Things They Carried" is considered one of the two best portrayals of the war experience in Vietnam along with Michael Herr's "Dispatches." "Things" is simply a tour-de-force of exquisite writing about the time the place and the men who experienced that particular conflict. Houghton Mifflin, unknown
