(Crimean War, Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire)
Austrian printings of the Treaty of Paris 1856 and Treaty of Berlin 1878
Very Good. Quarto half black leather marbled boards title stamped in gilt on spine. Offprints from the Reichs-Gesetz-Blatt of 1856 and 1878 bound together paginated 209-249; 177-209 very good light rubbing to leather. Important pair of treaties: the Paris 1856 treaty effectively concluded the Crimean War. The Western European powers pledged to maintain the integrity of the Ottoman Empire and restored the respective territories of the Russian and the Ottoman Empires to their prewar boundaries. They also neutralized the Black Sea for international trade: it was a huge setback for Russian influence in the region. The Treaty of Berlin 1878 came at the conclusion of the Russo-Turkish war and was a remapping of the Balkans pushing back Russian claims and forcing the Ottomans to accept the loss of major European holdings in a plan largely orchestrated by Bismarck. From 1849 to 1918 the Reichsgesetzblatt legal abbreviation: RGBl. was the official publication organ of the Imperial Patents Laws Regulations and State Treaties of the Austrian monarchy--at the time of these treaties under Franz Josef I. Although not stated owned by Ulysses Grant-Smith 1870-1959 a lifelong diplomat who was stationed in Vienna as part of the American Legation through WWI and who was later the American signatory of the US-Hungarian Peace Treaty of 1921 which had to be done separately because the US senate refused to be part of the Treaty of Trianon. These two treaties would have been good historical preparation for his approach to the 1921 treaty. unknown

[Civil War; New York]
The Militia Law of the State of New York. 1862
Albany: Weed Parsons and Co 1862. Wraps. Scarce Civil War era pamphlet on the militia law of 1862 during the period in which both northern and southern states had to rely on States' militias to meet their troop requirements.

At the beginning of the War neither North or South was adequately prepared for war; the total peacetime army consisted of only 16000 men. President Lincoln following the taking of Fort Sumter had to call up 75000 militia men. New York's share of this total was seventeen regiments of 780 men each or 13280 men.

There was also a shortage of weapons uniforms and trained officers. The States' militia regiments were of uneven quality and none had any combat training. Militia drilling consisted mostly of parade ground marching and the individual units had never drilled together as part of a larger regiment.

The pamphlet includes an act to provide for the enrollment of the militia.; military forms and instructions Index and "An Act to Enforce the Laws and Preserve Order passed 1845". 8vo 110pp forms.

Original yellow printed paper wrappers stitch binding. Wrappers marked fox spotting to lower corner title page otherwise very good condition. OCLC: 2970647. Weed, Parsons and Co unknown

[War; Crimea] J H
Original art work: Officer of the 10th Prince of Wales's Own Hussars outside Sevastopol
1850. Very good condition. A wonderful watercolor of a British cavalry officer at the siege of Sevastopol signed "J.H." at the lower right. Perhaps the original study for the finished painting by Richard Simkin stance and details are identical to Simkin's image britishcavalryregiments.com/30-10h/10h5.jpg depicting the officer from the back turning in the saddle to his right his uniform and the horse's tack are painted in lavish and painstaking detail down to the studs on the bridle. This artwork predates Simkin's work.

On the outbreak of war in the Crimea 1854-56 the 10th Hussars left India and traveled to the Black Sea but luckily were not part of Cardigan's charge of the Light Brigade avoiding the battle of Balaclava which took place in October of 1854. The regiment was heavily involved in the siege of Sevastopol and the triumphant battles of Eupatoria and Kerch.

The Regiment returned to England in 1856 and in 1863 the 10th The Prince of Wales's Own Royal Hussars again had a Prince of Wales as their colonel this was Prince Edward later King Edward VII. The 10th Hussars are credited with introducing polo to England having learned it in India when a captain in the 10th Hussars observed a match and immediately formed a team with his fellow officers.

9 3/4 x 11 3/4". Overall tanned slight water mark in area above the soldier's head. Painted on card stock. unknown

[War of 1812 - Soldier's Correspondence] Crawford, D
Lengthy Soldier’s Letter Written in the Aftermath of the War of 1812 Discussing Personal Expenses Incurred During the Formation of a Company During the Conflict
Fort Richmond 1815. Single page bifolium 15 x 9 ½ inches. One area of loss measuring roughly an inch square and affecting the final paragraph of the letter else about fine. Circular New York stamp with manuscript rate at the war rate of 25 ½ cents. An uncommonly detailed letter written by a Captain D. Crawford of the 46th Infantry to Colonel Charles K. Gardner detailing his career in the army and asking Gardner to advocate on his behalf for further military service. Crawford’s letter gives a detailed account of the process of forming a company by his own endeavors writing “in the fall of 1812 without bounty when the pay of a Soldier was but 5 Dollars per month I almost entirely by my own exertions enlisted a Company of 75 Volunteers.†He continues to make his case both for his career and for his reimbursement stating “That we have been in no battles is our misfortune rather than our fault. We have done our duty.†It is possible that his lack of engagement was a cause of the withholding of funds. Overall an interesting and detailed account of a Captain’s experiences in the War of 1812 worthy of study for scholars of the United States military during the period.

Fort Richmond S.I. April 28 1815

Dear Sir

Understanding that you have gone on to Washington and expecting you will remain there during the selection of Officers for the Peace Establishment I have thought proper to address you to make known my desire to continue in the Army and to solicit your assistance in that behalf wishing that through you the Secretary at War and the Officers directed to assist him may know my claims which will be briefly stated.

It is well known to you Sir that in the fall of 1812 without bounty when the pay of a Soldier was but 5 Dollars per month I almost entirely by my own exertions enlisted a Company of 75 Volunteers. The character of the Regt. to which I was attached is sufficiently known. Col. Gray’s reports will show in what state my Company was always found. The term of service of the principal part of the men expired on the 5th Novr. 1813. They generally volunteered a second time to stay till the January 1814 and as the Officers of our Regt. had no orders to engage them for a longer time they were then discharged and the most of them reenlisted in the 41st & 42nd Regts.

My appointment in the 46th Regt. is the 21st April 1814. The last of May following I was ordered on the recruiting service & during the Summer enlisted 49 men all except 2 for 5 years. I have rec’d $1000 only of the public money the amount necessary and that which is allowed by law to recruit the above number with the contingent account would be $3288 leaving a balance in my favor of $1788 a great part of which I have advanced and notwithstanding the exertions of Col. Tallmadge remains as yet unsettled.

We shall have remaining in our Regt. for 5 years about 70 men. Of course above half that will remain were enlisted by myself in fact the greatest number that any other officer recruited was 37.

If to have been the means of bringing in service a great part of the numbers of Volunteers mentioned above if to have recruited nearly 50 men for 5 years and by my own advances paid many of them the bounty if being senior Captain and enlisting a greater number of men by a fourth part than any other officer of our Regt. gives any claim then may I confidently expect what I ask. That we have been in no battles is our misfortune rather than our fault. We have done our duty. We have obeyed the orders of those appointed over us. Capt. Gourlay having made arrangements to go in business has given notice that it is his wish to be discharged.

I have only to observe that you have known me as a citizen and perhaps may have understood my character as an Officer and being well convinced that what anyone can do in my favor you can do I shall ever consider myself as gratefully obliged for any assistance you may render me.

Very Respectfully
Sir
Your obt. If it would not be asking too much I would request from you a line on this business which I could received at the Post Office in New York with your opinion when the reduction will take place as soon as convenient.
D.
