Collins was one of eleven musicians all privates who comprised the band for the 5th New Jersey Volunteers. The band was directed by Harry G. Frankenfield. Frankenfield had founded the Salem New Jersey Cornet Band 1860 and by October of 1861 he had raised the Regiment’s band in Trenton. The musical ensemble mustered out in August of 1862. John Hayward

Collins’s discharge is autographed by Samuel Henry “Old Paddy†Starr seen here as a Colonel of the 5th Regiment. Starr was a vulgar and highly-volatile old-guard dragoon. A strict disciplinarian he was known among his subordinates as “Old Nose Bag.†If a soldier transgressed Starr had the offender tied and straddled to a fence with his face strapped into a horse’s nose bag. A nice copy of an uncommon and perhaps the first separate edition.

Lamb's narrative was originally printed in Battles & Leaders 1887-8 see Dornbusch II 737. University of Virginia identifies this present edition as "1890 " but it is certainly a 20th century publication. Our research suggests that Harriss Printing & Advertising was active under that name from 1912 to the early 1920s. One may speculate this edition was issued in 1914 around the semicentennial of the battle. Whatever the case this is an extremely uncommon edition and likely the first separately printed of this interesting narrative of the North Carolina 2nd Artillery. ‎[Civil War Masonry] Pike, Albert‎

‎Hymns to the Gods and Other Poems Presentation copy to Fayette Hewitt‎

‎N.p.: Privately Printed 1872. First edition. 8vo 20x14cm 3 98pp with 50pp consisting of 13 separately printed Pike poems and "In Memoriam Albert Pike" from 1898 bound in at rear. Lengthy presentation inscription from Pike to Capt. Fayette Hewitt and dated in 1872 Washington on separate leaf in front; and opposite a lengthy presentation inscription from Hewitt to a J.H. Johnson in 1896 Frankfort KY memorializing his friendship with Pike and gifting the book. Additionally Pike has briefly inscribed 2 of the poems bound in at rear to Hewitt one dated in 1870. Bound for Hewitt in full gilt-ruled black morocco binding spine and turn-ins tooled in gilt gilt lettering on spine marbled endpapers g.e. Spine ends joints and corners rubbed. Few of the poems at rear with light transmittal folds.

Tremendous presentation copy of this privately printed collection of mythological poems from the Confederate General and architect of the Southern Scottish Rite Albert Pike 1809-1891. This copy presented to his close friend and subordinate Captain Fayette Hewitt 1831-1909 who served under Pike during the Civil War including the period of Pike's treaty negotiations in Indian Territory. Contemporary accounts from Pike on Hewitt illustrate the foundations of their relationship:

"He daily deserved praise and won the love and admiration of all who knew him. He became as dear to me as my own sons. Brave courteous amiable unassuming obliging and kind to every one firm in the performance of duty—a nobler gentleman or better soldier never lived."

This association is further deepened by the volume itself which Pike inscribed to “Capt. Fayette Hewitt†and which Hewitt preserved for over two decades before presenting it onward in 1896. Expanded with a substantial group of privately circulated poems including one inscribed in 1870 the volume documents a longstanding association between the two men later reinforced by Hewitt’s memorial presentation. L. Boyden in his Bibliography of the Writings of Albert Pike 1921 records many of these bound-in poems as separately issued printings spanning from 1859 through the early 1870s with titles including "Cruiskeen Lan" "The Light of Days Long Past" "After the Midnight Cometh Morn" "The Fine Arkansas Gentleman" and others.

In all this volume represents a singular object at the intersection of the Civil War Southern fraternal culture and the personal legacy of Albert Pike preserved through his wartime friend and subordinate Fayette Hewitt.

. ‎Duparcq, Ed De La Barre; George W Cullum‎

‎Elements of Military Art and History Comprising the History and Tactics of the Separate Arms; the Combination of the Arms; and the Minor Operations of War. "The Art of War"‎

‎
New York: D. Van Nostrand 1863. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 456 pages indexed. Hardcover bound in original red publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt and in blind. The binding is worn and bumped and is soiled from handling. Some splitting to the front hinge near the headcap; and the rear hinge is torn at the headcap. The inner hinges seem secure. The copyright page has a black and red label pasted down reading "George William Alexander / In Memoriam". The text is toned but appears generally clean. Illustrated with sporadic text drawings. The title on the front cover is "The Art of War". The name label is likely for George William Alexander 1802-1890 an English financier philanthropist and abolitionist. He was the founding treasurer of the "British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society" in 1836. Laid in loosely is a modern Officer Biography print off of George Washington Cullum. This book is NOT a book about military operations of the American Civil War. It was first published in France in 1857. Gen. Cullum writes in his Preface that he had been urged for years to prepare a book on military art and history but he never had the time. He writes ".I shrank from it from time to time till the breaking out of the rebellion of the Southern States since which my arduous duties have precluded the possibility of preparing such a work though fully aware of the importance of its being undertaken by some one especially for the benefit of our volunteer officers most of whom have not enjoyed the benefits of a military education. I now submit to our vast army and the public a translation of the best book on Military Art and History I could find among the many excellent productions of the French and German.".

D.
