[Civil War – Union Army – Carolinas Campaign – Freedmen] Vannada, George H
Letter from Union Army Soldier Concerning Sherman’s “Forty Acres†Order and His Carolinas Campaign
South Carolina 1865. Single letter measuring 7.5 x 10 inches folded one double-sided sheet with stampless envelope. Near fine with light normal wear. George Harpole Vannada 1844–1928 was a private promoted to corporal in Company I of the 25th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The 25th Infantry was a volunteer regiment mustered in August 1861 and mustered out in July 1865. At the time of Vannada’s writing the Regiment was involved in the Campaign of the Carolinas – led by General Sherman this campaign would culminate in the Army of the South’s unconditional surrender and effectively end the war.

Vannada writes that his regiment had “started with 25 days rations from pocotaligo staton for i supose Charleston.†On the way they had encountered:

“a few Johneys i.e. Confederates not far off i have heard sevrel cannons to day we will be botherd with them all the way to Charleston between here and Buford they had a fort a bout evry 3 miles they wood stop and fire a few shots and then get up a bug for the next fortâ€.
By “Buford†Vannada probably means Beaufort South Carolina which had been occupied by Union forces since November 1861. At this point the Savannah area had been essentially a refugee camp for freed people for several years and Sherman’s Special Field Orders No. 15 which settled them in the nearby South Carolina Sea Islands—the “forty acres and a mule†order—came in response to their request for stewardship over the land. Vannada remarks on Sherman’s order:

“Gen Foster has been on Buford Iland for 2 years and now Sherman has comand of his troops i think they will get off now this Iland they have to give to the Niggars to setle on that is all that have famlies 40 acre to the manâ€.

Vannada also accurately forecasts despite the fact that “we don’t often get any papers here to see what is goin on†that there “is some talk of peace down here but i think it is sevrel months off yetâ€. unknown

[MAP OF ASIA IN THE PACIFIC WAR].
大東亜戦争放送ニュース聽取用地圖. Daitōasensō Hōsō nyusu chōshuyō chizu. The Great East Asia War. Wireless News Listeners' Map.
東京. Tokyo.: 日本放送協会. Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1: 10000000 54.7cm x 79.5cm chronology of building the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere on reverse. Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge.

The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . 日本放送協会. [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown

[MURORAN - PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF US FORCES IN HOKKAIDO DURING THE KOREAN WAR].
米州兵輸送. Beishūhei yusō. Muroran Welcomes the Thunderbirds. 25 April 1951.
Japan. 1951. Eight black and white photographs 20.5 x 25.5cm each captioned in Japanese the handmade album is titled and dated in ink 23.5 x 32.8cm 9pp cord ties. One photograph has been removed card leaves and covers are browned surface of upper cover abraded in places some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran Hokkaido on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City" indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division nicknamed the Thunderbirds one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma.

The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950 and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951 arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel" which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers as they peruse a large map and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer.

Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN mostly American forces during the Korean War although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War. . unknown

[Civil War – Union Army] Unknown Artist
Portrait of a Young Union Army Soldier
United States N.d. Overpainted albumen photograph measuring approximately 6 ¾ x 8 ½ inches mounted on heavy cardstock. Slight marginal wear; excellent to Near Fine. An overpainted albumen photograph portrait of an unknown Union Army soldier who appears to be quite young dressed in Union fatigues. Though boys under 18 were not supposed to be able to enlist many did so anyway with some estimating that around 200000 underage boys joined the Union Army all told.1 Despite General Order 73 which ordered that “no discharges will be granted to volunteers . on the grounds of minority†so many families tried to get their underaged sons back from the Army that the New York Times called it an “epidemicâ€2. Nonetheless the brave child drummer boy or soldier became an iconic image of the Union cause.1

1 Frances M. [Russo-Japanese War – Imperial Japan] Uyeda, Kyoske
Two Postcards from a Soldier in Imperial Japan near the End of the Russo-Japanese War
Tokyo Japan 1905. Two postcards measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Near Fine. Two postcards from Kyoske Uyeda in Japan to his friend Bessie Mulkey in San Francisco dated May and July 1905. At the time the Russo-Japanese War fought over the Russian and Japanese Empires’ imperial ambitions for Manchuria and Korea was nearing its end. Uyeda had been on the front; in his earlier postcard he writes:

“May 5th 1905 I left the front at the end of March after the great victory around Mukden and have been back to Tokyo for sometime. I congratulate myself that I was fortunate enough to come back to the country at this glorious season of all sorts of beautiful flowers. The people too are enjoying the seasons as if there is no such terrible thing as war. They are having picnics every day. I will leave the country for the front within a short time. Kyo.â€

Mukden—present-day Shenyang Liaoning province—was the site of the war’s final land battle fought from February to March 1905 and resulting in a decisive victory for Imperial Japan. In his second postcard Uyeda is set to depart for another significant location in the war:

“I will leave here for Port Arthur to-morrow and having stayed there a day or two and coming back here am probably to go to our Headquarters at Mukhden to attend to the annual celebration of the day in which our Manchurian Expedition Army organised that is on the 6th of July 04. I expect a grand time there Marshal Oyama Gen. Baron Kodama Gen. Kuroki and many other grand chieftains will assemble at the Capital of Manchuria.â€

Port Arthur now Lüshunkou District in Liaoning province China was seized by the Japanese in 1894 during the First Sino-Japanese War; returned to China in 1895; and then leased in an unequal treaty by the Russian Empire in 1898. Japan’s surprise attack against the Russian fleet at Port Arthur launched the war in February 1904 and resulted in Japan retaking the port.

Uyeda’s notes are written on interesting themed postcards depicting the Imperial Japanese Navy; one reads “Our Combined Squadron steaming towards the enemy†and the other “Our torpedoboat squadron returning to a naval base after fighting with the enemy.†How Uyeda and Mulkey would have met and begun a correspondence is unclear. unknown

[Revolutionary War – Britain – Finance – Jamaica Coffee House] Sharpe, Nathaniel
1776 Letter from One Englishman to Another Asking for Financial Advice Given the “Fluctuating situation of Publick affairsâ€
Knaresborough England 1776. Single three page letter measuring 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Normal wear; Near Fine. A letter from Nathaniel Sharpe in Knaresborough to Edmund Green a merchant in London addressed to Green at the Jamaica Coffee House. This café the first of its kind in London was established in the mid-17th century; in 17th and 18th century Britain coffee houses were popular meeting places particularly for conducting business. Sharpe writes to Green:

“Your Esteem’d favour of the 22d is before me and the picture you have drawn of the situation of publick affairs are truly very alarming and have no doubt but the Representation is a very just and real one. . But to the following Fact place yourself in my situation and give me your Candid opinion Wether I am safe in letting £2200 lay any longer or whether I ought to call it in and place it out on a Security in this Country.â€

He describes his investments and states that:

“I have not one shilling in Trade since 1760 and in Decemr. 1762 Retir’d to this place and found myself in possession of a Happiness that I could ill brook to part with. And which I would wish to preserve. Should this sum be in no danger I can live as usual.â€

The American Revolutionary War had a significant impact on the British economy; at the time Sharpe was writing although the conflict had been ongoing for some time the war itself was in its early days and uncertainty was high.

Other than asking for financial advice Sharpe tells Green that Green’s “Brother Tommy had . taken a Cup of Liquor rather too freely and had been drawn into Cards†alarming their mother who had requested that Sharpe inform Green about the event; asks Green to visit her; and sends his good wishes to a mutual friend. unknown

[World War II – Germany – Nazism] Bliwernitz, Annemarie
Looking Back. A World War II Memoir by Annemarie Bliwernitz
St. Petersburg Florida: unpublished 1974. Ninety-four typed and photocopied pages measuring 8 ½ x 11 inches in a soft binding. Binding with wear; pages generally excellent to Near Fine. Overall excellent to Near Fine. Annemarie Bliwernitz 1905–2005 née Entz was born in Notzendorf East Prussia. In 1952 after surviving both World Wars she and her husband Bruno 1900–1992 immigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. Offered here is Annemarie’s unpublished memoir written between 1972 and 1974.

Bliwernitz grew up in a wealthy land-owning country family which she remembers lived far west enough that they did not have to flee the Russians during World War I and was less affected by the postwar economic situation than were city residents. Most of the memoir is taken up by Bliwernitz’s remembrances of World War II and life leading up to it. Of Hitler’s rise she writes:

“During these years conditions got worse in Germany . A new name came up ‘Adolf Hitler.’ – It was not hard for him to find followers now by the thousands and soon by the millions. He dared to stand up against the Communists with his brown uniformed S.A. men and a new wind seemed to blow over our illfated land. No wonder young people looked up to him and followed the new star nobody had much to lose. . Bruno and brother-in-law Willy after some meetings attended showed up in the new brown uniform also and farmers and laborers seemed to be united in that new idea. – It really changed Germany in a short time nobody could deny that unemployment ceased people got jobs again and housewives and mothers could buy the necessities of life for their families especially food. And it brought us to our feet again also.â€

Though of course Bliwernitz maintains that the “Concentration Camps and what happened in them was not known to the German people" she mentions that Bruno quickly became an Arbeitsdienstführer—essentially a labor camp overseer—and remembers dissenters being disappeared:

“As an example I will tell about Bruno’s oldest brother Alfred. He was all against Hitler from the beginning. One day he came home and picked up his neighbor’s paper at his frontdoor and wrote his ideas about Hitler and his lies down with pencil. This neighbor reported him they picked him up and that was the last his family saw of him. They were told ½ year later that he had died in Stuhm West Prussia a Concentration Camp. No explanation to his wife whatsoever. The same destiny happened to my co-worker a highly educated person at the Translation Office. She said in the lavatory where many ladies could hear: Hitler’s big picture in the office should be placed here in the toilet-rooms where it belongs. One of the ‘kind’ co-workers reported her and she came next day only to pick up her belongings and was not seen any more.â€

While Bruno is sent to the Eastern Front Bliwernitz and their children flee the Russians trying to reach the Americans on the Western Front. Along the way they encounter deserting German soldiers and near Hamburg liberated camp inmates:

“Shooting started close to us and we heard bombs exploding would we be hit We found out that the Concentration Camp near us had been opened and those freed inmates had shot their guardians. At daybreak we met the first one still in his black and white striped prison-suit kneeling on the ground by the chicken-coop and with his both hands feeding himself out of the bowl with the chicken food. . They came to us begging for a little bit of salt to cook the horse-meat they had cut out of the dead horses lying along the ditches . We talked to them and I remember one told me he was imprisoned because of his religion not to go to any war. He was from Elbing where I had gone to school as a young girl.â€

The family are reunited with Bruno and shortly before they surrender to the Americans they destroy the evidence of their party involvement: “Bruno’s N.S.D.A.P. membership-card my certificate for the ‘mother’s cross’ the passports of Horst and Juergen showing that they had been students of the Nazi-school in Stuhm etc.†After the German surrender the family is sent back east where they struggle to avoid starvation then return west where they are sent to live in Hardegsen. They finally decide in 1951 to emigrate as life in postwar Germany is simply too difficult but make the mistake of being honest about their history:

“Another big obstacle for us was that Bruno had been in a member in a Nazi-party though not an active one. But it was still a handicap in those days for any undertaking. We had not kept it secret in our immigration papers and they wanted a detailed description about our political involvement. That we did wrote a long letter in German didn’t have the money for an interpreter and never got an answer. . That was a bitter pill to swallow.â€

After this they decide to try for Canada instead and this time savvily “didn’t mention any Nazi-party attachmentâ€. This is a success; the family moves to Winnipeg and eventually to St. Petersburg Florida where the narrative was written. Bliwernitz recalls working as a housekeeper which she contrasts with her previous life in which she and her family would not allow maids farm hands or tradesmen to eat at their table with them.

Of interest to historians of the German civilian experience during the Second World War especially that of women and children. unpublished unknown

[World War II – Japan – Industrial History] Unknown Photographer
Press Photos of “The Paralyzed Industries of Japan†after the US and UK Froze Its Assets 1941
Japan: Brown Brothers 1941. Five photographs. Photos measuring 6 ½ x 8 ½ inches. With typed captions previously affixed typed captions verso or manuscript captions verso; with Brown Brothers stamps verso. Fine contrast and slight marginal damage; overall excellent to Near Fine. Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War the United States imposed a number of economic sanctions against Japan including the 1939 termination of its trade treaty with the country 1940 oil export embargo and 1941 executive order freezing Japanese assets in the US. Great Britain followed suit shortly thereafter. Offered here is a collection of press photographs documenting the effects of the US and UK’s economic sanctions on Japanese industry. One caption explains:

“The industries of Japan veritable bee hives until the trade treaty abrogatio by the United States followed by the freezing of funds belonging to the Niponese Government resulting in the dripping of exports from Japan from $18000000 to $500 in the past year has brought about the condition seen in this series of photos.â€

The factories pictured include a locomotive plant textile mill match factory and crockery exporter. The sanctions had a devastating impact on Japan’s economy which is partly blamed for their attack on Pearl Harbor. Brown Brothers unknown

[World War II] Spriggs, John H
SMALL ARCHIVE OF LETTERS from an Ohio infantryman killed in action 1943-44
1944. Unbound. Very good. Unbound. A poignant group of wartime letters from John H. Spriggs 1925–1944 of Urbana Ohio a U.S. Army infantryman who was wounded in Italy and later died in a German POW camp. The archive includes three autograph letters one a V-Mail written between 1943 and 1944 with their envelopes together with a newspaper article about Spriggs and the Urbana VFW Post that bears his name.

The correspondence begins with a V-Mail dated October 27 1943 addressed to Miss Rafferty followed by a single page on American Red Cross stationery apparently a fragment of a longer letter to “Marybel.†The final and most affecting letter dated February 7 1944 runs seven pages on six sheets and is addressed to Miss Eileen Scott “Dearest Marybelâ€.

Written while convalescing in North Africa after being wounded in Italy—a wound that earned him the Purple Heart—Spriggs’s letters are tender reflective and deeply personal. In his February letter he speaks of his hopes for life after the war: returning to Urbana attending college and finding his place again among friends. The tone grows wistful as he contemplates his feelings for Marybel acknowledging that his affection may not be returned. “I’ll never marry†he writes “you know why—but I can be your best friend in reserve.â€

Spriggs was released from the hospital on February 15 and returned to Italy. Within two weeks he was captured by German forces near Cisterna di Latina and died at Stalag XI-A Altengrabow Germany on April 27 1944. His name lives on in the Urbana VFW Post dedicated in his memory.

Also included is an unrelated 1941 letter from another Urbana soldier William Rafferty Jr. to his mother in Ohio. A moving and highly personal World War II correspondence documenting the brief life and final reflections of a young Midwestern soldier whose letters survived though he did not.

PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings unless we specifically note otherwise. All our dust jackets are protected in clear mylar covers. unknown
