New Haven: Yale University Art Gallery 1950. The Société Anonyme was conceived by and created in 1920 by Katherine S. Dreier Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray all artists committed to "the new movement in art" Modern Art. They assembled a membership of about 170 like minded artists who then assembled a collection by purchase gift or donation of more than 1000 works. The "Museum of Modern Art" in the title is not the museum we know today as MoMA which was established about a decade later. Drier and Duchamp intended the Collection itself as a Museum of Modern Art which would circulate through exhibitions for the education of the public. The catalogue lists 84 such exhibitions; the Collection also loaned works. In 1941 the open Collection was given to Yale University in 1950 the Collection was closed to further acquisitions. The Catalogue was published upon that closing. It represents the full Collection which represents many artists who were or were to become stars and other artists who have found oblivion. The Collection and the Catalogue are rich documents of artistic activity in the first half of the 20th century. Each artist is listed with a full statement by another Societe artist-member and her/his works in the collection. Appendices list Lectures Publications Exhibitions. An Index lists each artist and the writer of the artist's statement. Clean throughout no marks tears or folds; tight binding. The wrappers are faded at the edges especially along the spine. . Two pages 4to. On Dreiser's letterhead. Small stain on verso otherwise in fine condition. Dreiser writes in to Geoffrey Parsons the editor of the New York Herald Tribune from 1924-1952 describing a writing submission that he has attached with the letter: "Your general and varied courtesies to me but more particularly the general fairness with which you have regarded my views. make me mindful of things which may be entertaining to your readers. The enclosed letter and . which . well be entitled Fifty Million Frenchmen . in my estimation one such bit. If you agree you are welcome to it for your Sunday paper. All I ask is that you hold it for three weeks by which time L'Ordre will have had time to publish or discard it if they see fit. I am -- Yours truly Theodore Dreiser" In 1931 Dreiser became actively involved in the American Writers' League as well as the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners. During this year he also published Dawn: An Autobiography of Early Youth and Tragic America. Dreiser described having a complex relationship with news publications during the 1930s. He stated in 1936 that "many newspapers" had "glossed over" his political views. Nonetheless Dreiser did contribute several interviews as well as poems and book reviews to the New York Herald Tribune during Geoffrey Parsons' term as editor. In an interview given to the Tribune the month before this letter Dreiser discussed dissatisfaction with the Hollywood film adaptation of Tragic America retitled An American Tragedy Frederic E. Rusch and Donald Pizer eds. Theodore Dreiser: Interviews pp. 329 2004. Dreiser's use of the title "Fifty Million Frenchmen" is likely a reference to the 1929 Broadway musical of the same name with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The piece referred to here as "Fifty Million Frenchmen" was not published as such in either the New York Herald Tribune or in any other newspaper. He published another letter to the editor in the Tribune in February of 1932 replying to a review of Tragic America. First edition in first state binding and second state text.<br /><br /><i>Jennie Gerhardt</i> was Theodore Dreiser's second novel and his first true commercial success. Today it is generally regarded as one of his three best novels along with <i>Sister Carrie</i> and <i>An American Tragedy</i>. As submitted to Harper and Brothers in 1911 Jennie Gerhardt was a powerful study of a woman tragically compromised by birth and fate. Harpers agreed to publish the book but was nervous about its subject matter and moral stance. Jennie has an illegitimate child by one man and lives out of wedlock with another - but Dreiser does not condemn her for her behavior. As a requirement for publication Harpers insisted on cutting and revising the text. Although Dreiser fought against many of the cuts and succeeded in restoring some material Harpers shortened the text by 16000 words and completely revised its style and tone. These changes ultimately transformed Jennie Gerhardt from a blunt carefully documented work of social realism to a touching love story merely set against a social background. Passages critical of organized religion and of the institution of marriage were reduced and altered. Perhaps most important Jennie's point of view - her innate romantic mysticism - was largely edited out of the text. As a consequence the central dialectic of the novel was skewed and the narrative thrown out of balance.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Cloth spine lightly sunned with some rubbing previous owner's signatures to front blank and rear paste down. br. «'Diario di un delicato', pubblicato da Drieu La Rochelle (1893-1945) un anno prima del suicidio, delinea una solitudine senza scampo» scrive Milo De Angelis. «È una lunga, intensa, lacerata riflessione sulla vita che non si lascia prendere, che non si vuole prendere, dopo essere apparsa in un estremo di pienezza sotto le spoglie di una donna, Jeanne. Una donna che è un'invocazione ad entrare nel ritmo elementare della vita, delle sue forze feconde, materne, paterne, quotidiane, benignamente borghesi. Ma il protagonista (che è Drieu in tutto e per tutto) oppone il suo rifiuto. Certo, non è un rifiuto prestabilito: se così fosse, non avremmo alcun dramma, e verrebbe anche meno quel chiaroscuro allarmato e fosco di presagi che è la scrittura stessa di Drieu. Non prestabilito e tuttavia potente, contiguo alla parte distruttiva di sé che ormai (nel '44) prende il sopravvento».

brossura Nel suo ultimo romanzo, scritto fra il 1943 e il 1944, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle decide di sospendere la vertigine che prova di fronte alla decadenza e di disporre gli attori principali della recita del suo tempo in un contesto che ne saggi il temperamento e definisca il valore. Ecco il comunista, il nazionalista, il gollista, il nazista. Burattini platonici nelle mani degli dèi? [...] Numerose e tremende sono le questioni che pone I cani di paglia, testo non a caso sigillato da un'ammonizione di Lao-tzu: "Il Cielo e la Terra non sono indulgenti o benevoli al modo degli uomini: essi considerano tutti gli esseri alla stregua di cani di paglia da impiegare nei sacrifici". Il fine di una vita sembrerebbe essere, allora, se si porta alle estreme conseguenze l'etica antimoralistica di queste pagine, far sì che il sacrificio in cui ci si perde almeno esprima l'amore per un supremo stile.

Niente da fare-La donna con il cane
br. Pierre Eugène Drieu La Rochelle nasce a Parigi il 3 gennaio del 1893. Fra le letture importanti della sua giovinezza ci sono Nietzsche, D'Annunzio, Barrès, Péguy, Maurras, Withman. Iscritto nel 1910 alla Facoltà di Diritto inizia nel '13 il servizio militare, avendo anche occasione di ascoltare le conferenze di Bergson. Partecipa al conflitto con patriottismo convinto e viene ferito nella battaglia di Charleroi e poi ancora a Verdun. Fra il primo e il secondo dopoguerra, è come esitante fra 'ordine' e 'rivoluzione'; è attratto da diverse ideologie e da ideologie diverse (fascismo, nazismo, comunismo), capace di avvicinarsi al movimento surrealista, ma anche all'Action Française. L'esordio letterario è legato ai testi poetici di Interrogation, ('17), e Fond de cantine ('19), cui seguono i saggi Mesure de la France ('22), Le Jeune Européen ('27), Généve ou Moscou ('28), L'Europe contre les Patries ('31) Socialisme fasciste ('34), Avec Doriot ('37), Ne plus attendre ('41), Notes pour comprendre le siècle ('41), Chronique politique 1934-1942 ('43), Le Français d'Europe ('44). Tra queste date si inseriscono anche romanzi e racconti: da L'Homme couvert de femmes ('25) a Une femme à sa fenêtre ('29), da Le Feu follet ('31) a Drole de voyage ('33). Muore suicida a Parigi, il 15 marzo del 1945, dopo aver appreso la notizia di essere ricercato per collaborazionismo.

Piccoli borghesi
br. Controverso, originalissimo, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle è tra i più importanti scrittori francesi della prima metà del Novecento. Sconvolge, nei suoi libri, la calma apparente, una lucidità disperata e raggelata, ma che dissimula un tremore, una voragine dentro la quale Drieu si è già calato. Tutti i suoi romanzi esprimono la necessità di una confessione. Così è anche in "Piccoli borghesi", forse il suo capolavoro, pure se assente dalle librerie italiane da quasi mezzo secolo e che oggi riproponiamo nella storica traduzione di Alfredo Cattabiani. In questo romanzo familiare c'è la storia della vita dell'autore e i suoi complicati rapporti con suo padre. Un padre che Drieu, come ci ricorda Alessandro Gnocchi nel l'approfondito e intelligente saggio introduttivo, odiava e temeva.
