È l'ultimo e il più importante degli articoli di Marian Evans (vero nome della scrittrice), e contiene in filigrana il progetto estetico "realista" che George Eliot romanziera comincia nello stesso arco di tempo a realizzare. Se dai suoi autori favoriti (Scott, Balzac, George Sand) poteva aver imparato qualcosa in positivo, dalle signore romanziere recensite aveva tratto una vivida idea delle sciocchezze da evitare. Il sarcasmo per la "fatuità femminile" che si annida in certe "teste da cappellino" è a tratti sanguinoso, ma forse sarebbe più esatto definirlo sanguinante. Questo testo aiuta a capire perché George Eliot abbia scritto i romanzi che ha scritto.

Specialization Market Exchange and the Aztec State: A View from Huexotla in Current Anthropology Volume 21 Number 4

Archaeological data from Huexotla an Aztec-period site in the Valley of Mexico are used to test the proposition that Mexican states arose and expanded to facilitate specialization and market exchange. By and large this proposition is not supported by the Huexotla data. During Early Aztec times the Valley of Mexico was divided into a number of small autonomous city-states. The Huexotla data suggest that the local economies of these city-states were not characterized by a complex division of labor. Thus their existence does not seem to have depended upon their facilitating specialization and exchange at the local level. During Late Aztec times most of Central Mexico came to be dominated by the territorially extensive administratively complex Aztec empire. The Huexotla data provide evidence of more intensive participation in market exchange but they also suggest that urban demand for rural foodstuffs and urban control of imperial tribute goods were factors of primary importance in determining the Late Aztec pattern of market exchange. More intensive specialization or greater complexity in the division of labor within the Valley of Mexico seems to have played a minor role in the growth of the Late Aztec market system despite the environmental diversity of the marketing region. Torno alla mia postazione, accendo il pc ed entro nell'archivio digitale, dove sono caricate le fotografie del Manoscritto originale. Mi soffermo sull'aggettivo che ho appena usato, "originale", e mi rendo conto che nella mia testa ha ormai preso piede questa convinzione: il Manoscritto che conserviamo nella teca non è l'originale definito Rotulo 2..."

br. Oddio! Non credo ai miei occhi... Mi fermo, sono immobile, ipnotizzata, sto guardando una delle opere più belle che io abbia mai visto. Mi riferisco al Das Nibelungenlied, conosciuto anche come Il Canto o la Canzone dei Nibelunghi. Ed è proprio amore a prima vista. Ma... non tutto è come sembra, nemmeno le persone. E quando meno te lo aspetti, tutto appare differente, anche il sentiero che avevi imboccato. Come se un viandante dispettoso avesse rimescolato i segnali, così che non sono più in grado di capire quale sia la realtà e quale "l'altro mio mondo". Mi guardo intorno, la scena è straziante: da ogni parte giacciono cadaveri... gli eroi si sono battuti, le dame si sono scontrate, tutti contro tutti. Ecco... sono giunta alla fine, sì, proprio alla fine di tutto. È stato tutto così terribilmente coinvolgente, così orribilmente straziante, ma così tremendamente bello. E il silenzio "rimbomba" ovunque. Ma è proprio in quel preciso momento che tutto precipita...

"In 1897 Havelock Ellis published Sexual Inversion the first of his six volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex. The book was first serious study of homosexuality published in Britain. It was based partly as a result of his awareness of the homosexuality of his wife and friends such as Edward Carpenter. Ellis admitted in his autobiography: "Homosexuality was an aspect of sex which up to a few years before had interested me less than any and I had known very little about it. But during those few years I had become interested in it. Partly I had found that some of my most highly esteemed friends were more or less homosexual like Edward Carpenter not to mention Edith." According to a letter he wrote to Arthur Symonds Edith Lees Ellis promised to "supply cases of inversion homosexuality in women from among her own friends." / Phyllis Grosskurth "has argued: "Sexual Inversion was an unprecedented book. Never before had homosexuality been treated so soberly so comprehensively so sympathetically.
