‎Tome III seul (sur 3). — Selon Brunet, première édition in-8° après l'originale in-4° parue en 1769 de ces Commentaires. Les "Mémoires" de Montecuculi (première édition française en 1712), improprement dénommés, sont essentiellement une suite de réflexions sur l'art de la guerre, et seul le troisième et dernier livre renferme des récits sur ses campagnes (campagnes de Hongrie, campagnes contre les Turcs de 1661 à 1664, bataille de Saint-Gothard, etc.). Raimondo Montecuccoli (ou comte de Montecucculi), né en Italie, le 21 février 1609 près de Modène et mort à Linz le 16 octobre 1680, est un généralissime de l'Armée impériale du Saint-Empire romain germanique. C'est l'un des grands adversaires du général de Turenne, qu'il affronte pour la première fois pendant la guerre de Trente Ans. Non seulement il est l'un des plus grands capitaines du XVIIe siècle, mais aussi un théoricien militaire important. Frédéric le Grand, Scharnhorst et Clausewitz ont admiré son œuvre. Désormais les frais d'envoi sont de 6 € seulement pour les livres jusqu'à 1 kg (colissimo suivi), pour la France métropolitaine.‎

L'auteur, dont le talent a toujours été reconnu par tout le monde, a su l'assouplir à la manière neutre qu'exige le livre destiné à la jeunesse, et jamais livre d'étrennes n'a été plus gai, plus nerveux, plus enlevé que Jean-le-Conquérant. Ce livre est d'un genre entièrement nouveau, il se lie à l'histoire de notre empire colonial dont il raconte une des plus récentes conquêtes ; il apprend aux jeunes gens, en les intéressant au suprême degré, comment on rend sa patrie plus grande et plus riche. L'intérêt du volume est d'autant plus vif qu'on trouve à chaque page des dessins spirituels dus à l'habile crayon de Montégut. Cet enthousiasme conquérant s’incarne donc logiquement dans des personnages jeunes, adolescents, auxquels le lecteur s’identifie aisément et qui constituent à ses yeux autant de modèles enviables. Souvent, et dans ces cas le lien se fait plus étroit, plus pédagogique, entre les visées coloniales, l’exaltation de la Patrie et le rôle déterminant de l’Armée, le jeune héros est un militaire, enrôlé dans l’infanterie de marine... Au terme de multiples péripéties, Jean devient l’esclave d’une jeune et riche Annamite qui se justifie en déclarant : « Nous domestiques chez Français, Français peut domestique chez nous. » Un peu plus tard, un haut dignitaire annamite ne dissimule sa surprise en remarquant que « les Français nous font méchamment la guerre, quoi que nous ne leur ayons rien fait, que nous ne soyons pas allés chez eux », ce qui fera dire au philosophe Candès (qui accompagne Jean, comme Pangloss accompagne Candide) : « Les Chinois et les Annamites seraient peut-être aussi un peuple heureux si nous autres, Européens, nous ne mettions pas les pieds sur leur sol ? » Ces propos n’engagent cependant aucun débat anticolonialiste et le roman-conte s’achève sur le retour triomphal, à Marseille, du héros que le maire félicite d’avoir « conquis un grand empire et ouvert à notre commerce de nouveaux et féconds débouchés. » Roman à la fois grinçant et primesautier, à la tonalité idéologique incertaine, Jean-le-Conquérant reste partagé entre le respect des valeurs humanistes et la glorification de la France coloniale, sans doute à l’image même de son auteur Edgar Monteil (1845-1921), ancien communard, ancien communard, anticlérical et franc-maçon, devenu préfet de la République en 1888." ‎Der in Parma geborene Wilhelm Albrecht Fürst von Montenuovo entstammte der morganatischen Ehe des Grafen Adam Albert Graf von Neipperg mit der Erzherzogin Marie-Louise von Österreich, Gemahlin Napoléon Bonapartes, und erhielt den Titel eines Grafen Montenuovo (Neuberg). 1838 trat er in die österreichische Armee ein, kämpfte 1848 in Italien und Ungarn mit Auszeichnung und wurde 1854 Feldmarschallleutnant. 1860 wurde er Landeskommandant in Siebenbürgen, 1866 in Böhmen. 1867 wurde er zum General der Kavallerie befördert. 1878 trat er in den Ruhestand. 1864 wurde er in den erblichen Fürstenstand erhoben. - Der Empfänger der auf Französisch abgefassten Briefe ist Jacques (Jacob) Mislin (1807-1878). Der aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen stammende Mislin konnte dank seines Onkels an der berühmten Lehranstalt von Porrentruy im Schweizer Kanton Bern studieren, wo er nicht viel später auch selbst unterrichten sollte. Der 1830 zum Priester geweihte kath. Theologe wurde 1836 auf Vermittlung des Grafen von Bombelle an den Wiener Hof berufen, wo er einer der Lehrer der Söhne von Erzherzog Franz Karl und Erzherzogin Sophie wurde und damit sowohl den zukünftigen Kaiser Franz Joseph wie auch Erzherzog Ferdinand Maximilian (später Kaiser Max von Mexiko) unterrichtete (u.a. auch in Erdkunde). Vor der Revolution von 1848 unternahm Mislin eine Pilgerreise von Wien über Budapest und Konstantinopel nach Jersusalem. Der danach erschienene Reisebericht wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt und mehrfach nachgedruckt. In den folgenden Jahren leitete er die Bibliothek am Hof der Herzogin von Parma, Erzherzogin Marie Louise, wurde zum Abt von St. Maria von Deg (Ungarn), geheimer Kämmerer u. Hausprälat Papst Pius' XI., Apostolischer Pronotar, Kanoniker der Kathedrale von Großwardein, Träger zahlr. Orden (u.a. von Spanien, Parma u. des Ritterordens vom Heiligen Grab zu Jerusalem) sowie Mitglied zahlr. Akademien. Der Verfasser zahlr. Publikationen und Vertraute des belgischen Königs und des Grafen von Chambord blieb nach der Rückkehr von seiner Pilgerreise in Wien, wo er weiterhin in persönlichem Kontakt mit dem Kaiserhaus stand. - In einem numerierten, von Mislin eigenh. beschrifteten Papierumschlag. - Beiliegend 9 eigenh.
