Single sheet measuring 6.0 x 6.0 ins (approx. 15.0 x15.0 cms), on blank stationery, and dated 18 June 1997; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN 'PIP' GARDNER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 10 February 1942. The citation reads: 'On 23 November 1931 at Tobruk, Libya, Captain Gardner took two tanks to the rescue of two armoured cars of the King's Dragoon Guards, which were out of action and under heavy attack. Whilst one tank gave covering fire the captain dismounted from the other, hitched a tow rope to one of the cars, then lifted into it an officer, both of whose legs had been blown off. The tow rope broke, so Captain Gardner returned to the armoured car, but was immediately wounded in the arm and leg. Despite this he managed to transfer the wounded man to the second tank and returned to British lines through intense shell-fire'. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner (1914-2003) was serving with 4RTR in 32nd Tank Brigade during Operation CRUSADER, designed to destroy the bulk of Rommel's armour and force him to abandon his siege of Tobruk.

Gaston Pierre de Lévis-Mirepoix (1699-1757), duc de Mirepoix, militaire, maréchal de France. L.A.S., sd [« ce mardi à dix heures du soir, après 1751, 1756?], 2p in-4. A Marc Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (1696-1764), comte d'Argenson, ministre de la guerre, probablement au moment de choisir qui dirigera l'armée de Hanovre pour la guerre de Sept Ans. On y voit toute l'influence de Richelieu et les oreilles attentives du roi et de la Pompadour à ses démarches alors que Mirepoix n'a « que » l'oreille du comte d'Argenson et des Maillebois. C'est finalement Richelieu qui eut la direction. « Monsieur, Madame de Mirepoix vient d'arriver. Vous devez déjà savoir par le comte de Maillebois toutes les instances qui ont été faites par M. de Richelieu. Il a parlé au Roi, il a parlé à madame de Pompadour, il l'a fait de toutes les couleurs les plus vives disant qu'il se regarderait comme disgracié mais comme déshonoré si dans les circonstances présentes on le laissait inutile. Mes couleurs ne sont pas si vives que les siennes, mais la différence du grade n'en met point assez entre nous pour qu'il ne me soit très amer de me trouver à ses ordres. Je suis comme je le dois soumis à toutes les dispositions et intentions du Roi mais ce serait tant le dernier effort de mon obéissance. Ces instance de Mr de Richelieu ont eu assez de succès pour que madame de Mirepoix et le comte de Maillebois aient cru nécessaire d'appeler les prétentions du maréchal de Maillebois aux siennes. J'en avais d'avance fourni l'expédient au comte de Maillebois. Si je dois encore obéir, ce sera à son père plus volontiers qu'à personne. Le comte de Maillebois a parlé au Roi, vous savez d'avance ce qu'il lui devait dire et vous êtes sans doute instruit de ce moment que l'accueil a été favorable. Vous seul pouvez dissiper et résoudre l'orage nouvellement survenu. Vous savez, monsieur, qu'il n'est pas trop dans mes habitudes de rappeler mes services, mais en vérité, je puis me flatter que, sans faire tort à ceux de Mr de Richelieu, la différence de grade qu'il y a entre nous ne devrait pas déterminer de préférence en sa faveur. Nous avons été faits lieutenants généraux à la même promotion, et même, j'en ai exercé les fonction avant lui. Quelques critiques que l'ayant pour moi les circonstances, je me [fin illisible]. Mes affaires sont entre vos mains, et en dos dispositions. Je crois pouvoir vous dire quelles seront bien secondées.
