Fort Leavenworth KS: U.S. Army Combined Arms Center 1985. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. Approximately 40 pages. Wraps. Figures. Appendices. Glossary. References. Spine discolored and faded. Prepared by the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center Fort Leavenworth KS. Topics covered include planning preparation and conduct of the After Action Review. Appendices compare a critique with an After Action Review and present a sample AAR. The cover states that this Field Circular expires December 1988 unless sooner superseded or rescinded. The After Action Review AAR is a deceptively simple yet powerful way to stimulate the growth and performance of any group of people. As an organizational learning tool it has been used to transform small teams and entire armies into high performers. Success comes in the doing. The After Action Review has been credited with helping pull the U.S. Army out of its post-Vietnam funk. By the 1980s the AAR was part of the natural order. The Army did them all the time whether it was after morning physical fitness regime or deep in the woods during a training exercise. The Army honed its concept of the AAR at a desert training facility in Nevada where a professional Opposition Force OPFOR took on visiting army units. At the beginning of a training rotation the OPFOR routinely trounced the visitors. But by the end it became much harder to predict the outcome and sometimes the visitors would win. Airs can work for anybody and in any situation. You can harvest new knowledge gathered in near real time and then channel that knowledge back into your process so that each iteration of whatever it is that you do gets successively better. An After Action Review AAR is a professional discussion of a training event that enables Soldiers/units to discover for themselves what happened and develop a strategy for improving performance. Facilitators provide an overview of the event plan what was supposed to happen and facilitate a discussion of what actually happened during execution. This leader’s guide supports the Army training doctrine in ADP 7-0 and ADRP 7-0 Training Units and Developing Leaders. The concepts and processes in this manual are applicable to the Active Army Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States and United States Army Reserve unless otherwise indicated.
