On aged and worn paper with chipping to edges and pitting along a horizontal central line but with both signatures clear and unblemished. The customary printed document completed in manuscript. Seltene Autobiographie des Schweizer Diplomaten und Militärs Hans Bringolf (1878-1951), der "ab Sommer 1894 zunächst in Heidelberg und dann in Innsbruck, Wien, Rom und Berlin studierte, bis er schließlich 1899 in Greifswald zum Dr. iur. promovierte. Das Studium unterbrach er verschiedentlich für Militärdienst und Truppenübungen in der Schweizer Armee. Dabei erhielt er von seinen Kameraden den Spitznamen Leutnant Bringolf selig, da er bei Manövern mehrfach für tot erklärt wurde. Nach dem Studium war Bringolf bis 1904 im schweizerischen diplomatischen Dienst, wurde daraus jedoch entlassen, als er aufgrund von Schulden Schecks fälschte. Wegen dieses Vorfalls schloss ihn seine Studentenverbindung aus der Heidelberger Zeit, das Corps Guestphalia, aus. Zur Vermeidung von Haft floh er aus der Schweiz in die USA und kommandierte dann von 1906 bis 1908 ein US-amerikanisches Polizei-Truppenkontingent auf den Philippinen. Später war Bringolf wegen Betrugs in Lima (Peru) inhaftiert. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Europa gab er sich in Heidelberg in hochstaplerischer Weise als Baron von Tscharner und Alter Herr des Corps Guestphalia aus und wurde daraufhin zu einer Haftstrafe verurteilt, die er in Mannheim absaß. Nach Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde er Offizier in der französischen Armee und erlangte wegen besonderer Tollkühnheit an der serbischen Front den Beinamen Löwe von Manastir. Er wurde 1923 in die Ehrenlegion aufgenommen und kurz darauf erneut als Betrüger entlarvt" (Kommentar des Antiquariats Petrej, Zürich). Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und das Vorsatzpapier angestaubt und stockfleckig, insgesamt jedoch noch gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.

Printed on both sides of a 15 x 135 cm strip of paper concertina-folded to make 30pp. with each page on a 15 x 9 cm panel. A scarce survival on aged and worn paper. No illustrations but detailed entries in small print. One side carries 10pp of 'Cavalry and Artillery Recruits' Physical Training Tables' 4pp of 'Trained Solders' Physical Exercise Tables' and the title. No date but circa 1715 and amended until the mid-1720s. No place War Office London. The present early eighteenth-century document lists the heads of British Army regiments from the period of the Glorious Revolution to the accession of George I. Internal evidence suggests that it was compiled around 1715 and that it was amended until the mid-1720s. The care with which it was compiled over a decade and in a number of hands would appear to suggest some sort of official standing. It is on nineteen 18 x 7.5 cm leaves of laid paper formed in ten bifoliums now loose but originally bound together and with traces of thread still present. Aged and worn with slight loss to bottom inner corners of first five bifoliums not affecting any text. Paginated 1-10 15-42 showing that the document is lacking four pages bifolium containing pp.11-14. The volume can be dated from the entry for the Royal Fusiliers whose Captain is said in the original list to be 'Coll: O Hara' this being changed in another hand to 'Ld Kilmaine' with a second addition of 'now Ld: Tyrawly'. James O'Hara was made Colonel of the Regiment in 1713; was Lord Kilmain in 1722 and Lord Tyrawly in 1724. The first page is ruled at the head with two horizontal red lines. Headings to following pages: 'Horse Guards' 1; '2 Troope of Guards' 2; '3. Troop of Guards' 3; '4. Troope of Guards' 4; '5. First Troope Granades:' 5; '6. Second Troop Granades:' 6; '7. With 17pp publisher's catalogue on pink stock bound in at front and rear.The compilation of the Manual of Military Law was initiated by Secretary of State for War Stanley in 1879. In order to produce a single comprehensive manual the Rules of Procedure required considerable legal amendment including the repeal and replacement of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879 by the Army Act 1881. The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884. The present edition contains an entirely new chapter on the laws and usages of war revisions resulting from the Army Reforms of 1908 and notably the inclusion for the first time of the Official Secrets Act. It is arguably the most significant single issue containing as it does the broadest set of amendments stemming from sea changes in service structure and practice. A highly unusual presentation of this basic handbook we have never encountered another similar. Octavo 267 x 175 mm. Tables to the text. Contemporary full crimson hard-grain morocco presentation binding title gilt to the spine low flat bands with gilt dotted roll compartments elaborately gilt concentric panelling in gilt and blind to the boards fleur-de-lys cornerpieces large block of the Royal Arms to the centre of both boards all edges gilt floral roll to edges and turn-ins pale cream surface paper endpapers. A little light shelf-wear corners bumped but overall very good indeed an extremely handsome copy. hardcover

With the 24pp (23 printed) catalogue of military books on pink stock. With small trade stamp on front free endpaper and previous owner's initial inked on top edge. The scarce cloth case lettered in black is particularly well-preserved. The Field Service Pocket Book (B11013) was the 'bible' for officers on active service in the Great War. A remarkably concise yet comprehensive reference, it is rarely found in this condition. A RARE SURVIVAL.
