Page tops are unopened/uncut. Extract from L'ENSEIGNEMENT MATHÉMATIQUE Nos 1 2 3 1933. Bound in the original wraps stamped in black. "In 1928 the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction meeting in Bologna asked Gino Loria 1862-1954 to prepare a report for the International Congress of Mathematicians to take place in Zürich in 1932. The Congress was held from 5 to 12 September 1932 and he delivered his report La préparation théorique et pratique des professeurs de mathématiques de L'Enseignement secondaire dans les divers pays which was published in full in 1933 in L'ENSEIGNEMENT MATHÉMATIQUE. In recognition of his efforts the Commission conferred the title of Honorary Member on Loria on 15 July 1936." - J. J. O'Connor and E. F. Robertson. This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his ink stamp signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. The American mathematician Temple Rice Hollcroft 1889 - 1967 received B.S. in 1912 and A.B. in 1914 from Hanover College and then A.M. in 1915 from the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954 from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician ICM. His subject was THE GENERAL WEB OF SURFACES AND THE SPACE INVOLUTION DEFINED BY IT…. ‎Louis Phélypeaux de Saint-Florentin. Lettre signée, 1775 Homme d'état français Lettre autographe signée "Le Duc de La Vrillière", Louis Phélypeaux de Saint-Florentin , datée du 8 mai 1775. Rédigée à l'encre brune sur un feuillet de papier vergé filigrané. Une des dernières lettres de Phélypeaux en tant que ministre. Lettre adressée à un intendant royal, rédigée sous le règne de Louis XVI, mais au terme d une carrière menée sous Louis XV, dont La Vrillière fut l un des plus anciens serviteurs. Quelques semaines plus tard, en juin 1775, il cédera le secrétariat d État à la Maison du Roi à Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes. Le ministre y rectifie une erreur administrative tout en saluant le zèle du correspondant : "Monsieur, C'est par erreur que la lettre circulaire adressée à tous MM. les Intendants du Royaume vous a été envoyée, on ne s'en pas rappelé dans mes Bureaux l'arrangement qui a été fait lorsque vous avés passé de l'Intendance d'Aix a celle de la Rochelle, auquel vous êtes entièrement maitre de vous conformer. Je ne puis cependant qu'applaudir au zèle qui vous porte a vous rendre dans les circonstances présentes dans votre généralité, et je ne manquerai pas d'en rendre compte au Roy qui vous en saura certainement très bon gré. [...]" Lettre représentative du fonctionnement administratif des intendances à la fin de l Ancien Régime, et l une des dernières correspondances ministérielles de Phélypeaux, témoin de la transition entre les règnes de Louis XV et Louis XVI. ‎Le premier rapport circonstancié de la marche du choléra dans Paris, "dont le premier cas de choléra est attesté le 26 mars 1832. La violence de la maladie et sa méconnaissance sur le plan médical, vont profondément traumatiser les Français" (source Bibliothèque Mazarine). Ce rapport étudie la propagation dans chacun des 48 quartiers, les populations touchées, l'intensité des contaminations, le nombre de décès. Une riche étude statistique, nécessaire et magistralement menée par un comité de savants nommés dès la fin de l'épidémie par les préfets de Seine et de Police.
