‎Nakomelingen c.1720. Edition: First Edition. Binding: No binding. Notes: Text in Dutch.Folio. Approx. 410 x 260 mm.
A very good example of this “extraordinary visual record of the first banking crash showing the shocking effects of the South Sea Bubble in France England and Holland and placing John Law 1671-1729 with his Mississippi company scheme squarely at the centre of the disastrous chain of events. ‘A unique historical document … of real significance’†Cole p.1; “the engravings which illustrate the rise and fall of the great speculation are full of humor; many of them are exceedingly ludicrous and some very obscene†Sabin. “Published in Amsterdam the giant tome includes pamphlets legal documents economic analyses maps satirical plays poems playing cards and more than seventy prints. The volume attracted wide audiences feeling the sting of the financial crises taking place in England France and the Dutch Republic that together resulted in the first international stock market crash.â€
“Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid references Tulipmania in the Dutch Republic where the prices of tulip bulbs spiked and abruptly plummeted in 1637; the South Sea Bubble in England and Mississippi Bubble in France that burst in 1720; and other British French and Dutch enterprises that failed in 1720. Investing frenzy is characterized as a form of contagion moving from one country to the next: a consequence of the craze for international emulation as was evident in the English for example adopting the measures of John Law’s Mississippi Company that ultimately resulted in the South Sea Bubble. Prints in the volume commonly depict the dreams disordered states of mind and moral failures of investors caught up in the speculative zeal—alluding to herd behavior gambling corruption insanity immorality and demonic possession.â€
The text first appeared in 1720/21 and continued to be reprinted throughout the 18th century. Very few copies of this book survive as most were broken apart so that engravings could be sold individually. Professor Arthur Cole writes: “Rarely does a single volume combine in itself so much economic interest and so many bibliographical puzzles as Het Groote Tafereel Der Dwaasheid. There is scarcely another item just like it. Not merely are the identity of the compiler and the place of publication unknown and not merely is the date of original issuance uncertain but the volume went through an evolutionary process over time quite unnoticeable by ordinary superficial inspection. Moreover so strange was the mode of issuance that no two specimens even of approximately the same actual issue date are exactly the same. Neither the textual material nor the engraved prints are always identical nor do they appear in the same sequence within the volume.â€

This copy with 68 plates many folding out and/or double-page. "The Development of State Legislation Concerning the Free Negro is an odd but very important and extremely useful book. Written nearly a century ago it is an example of the best of the Ph.D. dissertations of the first generation of doctoral students in the social sciences. It lacks any great theoretical framework or much analysis but it is chock full of information facts tables and excerpts from laws. It is also useful because many of the laws set out in this volume are not easily found otherwise. Despite the massive growth of material on the internet or in machine readable form early laws are still hard to locate. Anyone interested in the history of segregation and racism will find Johnson's pioneering work invaluable." -- Paul Finkelman Introduction iii. unknown books‎

New. $24.95 Examines an important and complex period in the history of the laws and customs devised by merchants to regulate their relations with each other and the changes in the law merchant and in negotiable instruments in colonial New York during the years 1664 to 1730 in the context of New York's commercial place in the British Empire. "Economic influences and legal theory combined to form the New York law of negotiable instruments during the colonial period. That the legal theory was an amalgam of Dutch civil law and elementary English common law serves to complicate the situation. Furthermore the unsettled nature of the judicial system during the seventeenth century made consistent legal development fortuitous at best and haphazard at its worst. This fluid state of economic and legal development is as fascinating in its complexity as it is baffling in its inconsistency." Introduction 3. "This brief study of the law of merchant and bills of exchange has as its background a fascinating era of legal history. Changing legal institutions and patterns of trade were typical of these early years. For the student of history as well as the legal scholar these developments are of great significance for they are the basis for the future growth of the law and the commercial supremacy of the province of New York." ‎COMMISSION UNDER THE CONVENTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES & PARAGUAY. Opinion and Report of Hon. Cave Johnson, The American Commissioner, Accompanying the Award.‎

‎70p. 8vo. Modern wraps. According to the 'Dictionary of United States History' "A commercial treaty was concluded between the United States and Paraguay in 1853, but Paraguay failed to ratify it. Differences arose which led to the manifestation of force by the United States, and treaties of indemnity, commerce and navigation were concluded in 1859." The controversy involved the U.S.S. Water Witch, a sidewheel gunboat sloop built in 1853. Its first assignment was to undertake an extensive survey of the region around the River Plate, and in particular the Parana River in Argentina and Paraguay. The ship sailed under command of Lieutenant Thomas Jefferson Page on February 8, 1853, and after several stops, she arrived at Buenos Aires in May. After ensuring the safety of the Argentine Confederation's General Justo Urquiza following the siege of Buenos Aires, Page began his official assignment. Water Witch was the first steam vessel to ascend the Parana, Paraguay, and Salado Rivers, and her three years of surveys showed that these rivers were navigable by large, powered vessels, a fact that had great implications for the growth of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. Though the expedition was a success, on February 1, 1855, Page ignored a Paraguayan decree forbidding him to ascend the Parana River, and one sailor was killed when the fort at Itapiru fired on the ship. Water Witch returned to the United States in 1856, and in 1858 returned to the Plate as part of Flag Officer W. B. Shubrick's Paraguay Expedition, one aim of which was to negotiate a treaty and compensation for the dead man's family. Scarce. LATIN AMERICA BOX 2‎
